ELCD-NSC2: a novel early lung cancer detection and non-small cell classification framework

The survival rate of lung cancer relies significantly on how far the disease has spread when it is detected, how it reacts to the treatment, the patient’s overall health, and other factors. Therefore, the earlier the lung cancer diagnosis, the higher the survival rate. For radiologists, recognizing malignant lung nodules from computed tomography (CT) scans is a challenging and time-consuming process. As a result, computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems have been suggested to alleviate these burdens. Deep-learning approaches have demonstrated remarkable results in recent years, surpassing traditional methods in different fields. Researchers are currently experimenting with several deep-learning strategies to increase the effectiveness of CAD systems in lung cancer detection with CT. This work proposes a deep-learning framework for detecting and diagnosing lung cancer. The proposed framework used recent deep-learning techniques in all its layers. The autoencoder technique structure is tuned and used in the preprocessing stage to denoise and reconstruct the medical lung cancer dataset. Besides, it depends on the transfer learning pre-trained models to make multi-classification among different lung cancer cases such as benign, adenocarcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma. The proposed model provides high performance while recognizing and differentiating between two types of datasets, including biopsy and CT scans. The Cancer Imaging Archive and Kaggle datasets are utilized to train and test the proposed model. The empirical results show that the proposed framework performs well according to various performance metrics. According to accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, and AUC metrics, it achieves 99.60, 99.61, 99.62, 99.70, and 99.75%, respectively. The faculty of computer Science, Universitas Brawijaya (Filkom UB) is committed to providing quality services for the users especially internal and external stakeholders, one of which is through the HaloFilkom service. HaloFilkom services have limitations in terms of time. HaloFilkom services are not available 24 hours due to limited working hours. Questions asked by users are not answered directly. This weakness in the HaloFilkom system can be overcome by using a chatbot system. Chatbot is an interactive system that works with natural human language and can work 24 hours. Thus, the current study explores the basic chatbot model by classifying the Q&A in the closed domain knowledge. The dataset in this research is in the form of pairs of questions and answers regarding various topics at the Filkom UB. The knowledge is preprocessed using text preprocessing which includes case folding, tokenization, padding, and tensorization. One of the chatbot models is a generative model. Creating a generative chatbot model can be done using the Seq2Seq model mechanism which consists of an encoder and decoder. The model created consists of four different architectures, namely a model with an LSTM encoder without attention and with attention and a BiLSTM model encoder without attention and with attention. Hyperparameter tuning was conducted to obtain the best hyperparameter combination. The experiment results show the best hyperparameter combination obtained is hidden size 448, drop out rate 0.5, learning rate 0.001, batch size 64, and teacher force 0. The model with the best loss is obtained with a BiLSTM encoder architecture without an attention mechanism with a train loss of 0.120. The model with the highest BLEU Score was obtained by a model with a BiLSTM encoder architecture without an attention mechanism with a BLEU Score of 0.8587 on the training data. This tertiary systematic literature review examines 29 systematic literature reviews and surveys in Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) to uncover trends, limitations, and future directions. The study explores current explanation techniques, providing insights for researchers, practitioners, and policymakers interested in enhancing AI transparency. Notably, the increasing number of systematic literature reviews (SLRs) in XAI publications indicates a growing interest in the field. The review offers an annotated catalogue for human-computer interaction-focused XAI stakeholders, emphasising practitioner guidelines. Automated searches across ACM, IEEE, and Science Direct databases identified SLRs published between 2019 and May 2023, covering diverse application domains and topics. While adhering to methodological guidelines, the SLRs often lack primary study quality assessments. The review highlights ongoing challenges and future opportunities related to XAI evaluation standardisation, its impact on users, and interdisciplinary research on ethics and GDPR aspects. The 29 SLRs, analysing over two thousand papers, include five directly relevant to practitioners. Additionally, references from the SLRs were analysed to compile a list of frequently cited papers, serving as recommended foundational readings for newcomers to the field. © 2024 IEEE.

A transformer model for boundary detection in continuous sign language

Sign Language Recognition (SLR) has garnered significant attention from researchers in recent years, particularly the intricate domain of Continuous Sign Language Recognition (CSLR), which presents heightened complexity compared to Isolated Sign Language Recognition (ISLR). One of the prominent challenges in CSLR pertains to accurately detecting the boundaries of isolated signs within a continuous video stream. Additionally, the reliance on handcrafted features in existing models poses a challenge to achieving optimal accuracy. To surmount these challenges, we propose a novel approach utilizing a Transformer-based model. Unlike traditional models, our approach focuses on enhancing accuracy while eliminating the need for handcrafted features. The Transformer model is employed for both ISLR and CSLR. The training process involves using isolated sign videos, where hand keypoint features extracted from the input video are enriched using the Transformer model. Subsequently, these enriched features are forwarded to the final classification layer. The trained model, coupled with a post-processing method, is then applied to detect isolated sign boundaries within continuous sign videos. The evaluation of our model is conducted on two distinct datasets, including both continuous signs and their corresponding isolated signs, demonstrates promising results. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

Designing a skilled soccer team for RoboCup: exploring skill-set-primitives through reinforcement learning

The RoboCup 3D soccer simulation league serves as a competitive platform for showcasing innovation in autonomous humanoid robot agents through simulated soccer matches. Our team, FC Portugal, developed a new codebase from scratch in Python after RoboCup 2021. The team’s performance relies on a set of skills centered around novel unifying primitives and a custom, symmetry-extended version of the proximal policy optimization algorithm. Our methods have been thoroughly tested in official RoboCup matches, where FC Portugal has won the last two main competitions, in 2022 and 2023. This paper presents our training framework, as well as a timeline of skills developed using our skill-set-primitives, which considerably improve the sample efficiency and stability of skills, and motivate seamless transitions. We start with a significantly fast Sprint-Kick developed in 2021 and progress to the most recent skill set, including a multi-purpose omnidirectional walk, a dribble with unprecedented ball control, a solid kick, and a push skill. The push addresses low-level collision scenarios and high-level strategies to increase ball possession. We address the resource-intensive nature of this task through an innovative multi-agent learning approach. Finally, we release the team’s codebase to the RoboCup community, providing other teams with a robust and modern foundation upon which they can build new features. © The Author(s) 2025.

In this paper, we propose two self-adaptive extragradient-like algorithms for solving pseudomonotone variational inequalities. We consider two cases: the mapping is Lipschitz continuous (with unknown modulus) and is not Lipschitz continuous. The step size in our algorithms can either increase or decrease at each step. This feature makes our algorithms more efficient. We also give some numerical examples to compare the performance of our algorithm with the existing one. ©2024 Applied Set-Valued Analysis and Optimization.

This Lightweight Deep Learning (LDL) for Multi-View Human Activity Recognition in Ambient Assisted Living Systems can significantly improve the conditions of daily activities for people living with the elderly, disabled, or simply needing assistance. Human Activity Recognition (HAR) is essential for these systems;currently, the task of identifying the wide array of human activities remains complicated. This study introduces an improved deep learning solution for recognizing human activity from multiple viewpoints in AAL environments. By utilizing skeleton data from various perspectives, such as the RHM-HAR-SK dataset, we demonstrate useful improvements in accuracy for activity recognition when compared with single-view methods. Our LeNet and Vision Transformer models have been carefully designed to excel with skeletal data, delivering outstanding performance while keeping computational requirements to a minimum. In this research study also highlights the benefits of multi-view human activity recognition in ambient assisted living and emphasizes the effectiveness of efficient deep learning models in enabling assistive technologies that are real-time and resource friendly. These advancements support more independence and safety by supporting the development of AAL systems that are more sensitive and intelligent. © 2024 IEEE.

An imbalanced dataset often challenges machine learning, particularly classification methods. Underrepresented minority classes can result in biased and inaccurate models. The Synthetic Minority Over-Sampling Technique (SMOTE) was developed to address the problem of imbalanced data. Over time, several weaknesses of the SMOTE method have been identified in generating synthetic minority class data, such as overlapping, noise, and small disjuncts. However, these studies generally focus on only one of SMOTE’s weaknesses: noise or overlapping. Therefore, this study addresses both issues simultaneously by tackling noise and overlapping in SMOTE-generated data. This study proposes a combined approach of filtering, clustering, and distance modification to reduce noise and overlapping produced by SMOTE. Filtering removes minority class data (noise) located in majority class regions, with the k-nn method applied for filtering. The use of Noise Reduction (NR), which removes data that is considered noise before applying SMOTE, has a positive impact in overcoming data imbalance. Clustering establishes decision boundaries by partitioning data into clusters, allowing SMOTE with modified distance metrics to generate minority class data within each cluster. This SMOTE clustering and distance modification approach aims to minimize overlap in synthetic minority data that could introduce noise. The proposed method is called “NR-Clustering SMOTE,” which has several stages in balancing data: (1) filtering by removing minority classes close to majority classes (data noise) using the k-nn method;(2) clustering data using K-means aims to establish decision boundaries by partitioning data into several clusters;(3) applying SMOTE oversampling with Manhattan distance within each cluster.
