Divide-and-train: A new approach to improve the predictive tasks of bike-sharing systems

Bike-sharing systems (BSSs) have become commonplace in most cities worldwide as an important part of many smart cities. These systems generate a continuous amount of large data volumes. The effectiveness of these BSS systems depends on making decisions at the proper time. Thus, there is a vital need to build predictive models on the BSS data for the sake of improving the process of decision-making. The overwhelming majority of BSS users register before utilizing the service. Thus, several BSSs have prior knowledge of the user’s data, such as age, gender, and other relevant details. Several machine learning and deep learning models, for instance, are used to predict urban flows, trip duration, and other factors. The standard practice for these models is to train on the entire dataset to build a predictive model, whereas the biking patterns of various users are intuitively distinct. For instance, the user’s age influences the duration of a trip. This endeavor was motivated by the existence of distinct user patterns. In this work, we proposed divide-and-train, a new method for training predictive models on station-based BSS datasets by dividing the original datasets on the values of a given dataset attribute. Then, the proposed method was validated on different machine learning and deep learning models. All employed models were trained on both the complete and split datasets. The enhancements made to the evaluation metric were then reported. Results demonstrated that the proposed method outperformed the conventional training approach. Specifically, the root mean squared error (RMSE) and mean absolute error (MAE) metrics have shown improvements in both trip duration and distance prediction, with an average accuracy of 85% across the divided sub-datasets for the best performing model, i.e., random forest. © 2024 the Author(s).

Synthesis of Batik Motifs using a Diffusion - Generative Adversarial Network

Batik, a unique blend of art and craftsmanship, is a distinct artistic and technological creation for Indonesian society. Research on batik motifs is primarily focused on classification. However, further studies may extend to the synthesis of batik patterns. Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) have been an important deep learning model for generating synthetic data, but often face challenges in the stability and consistency of results. This research focuses on the use of StyleGAN2-Ada and Diffusion techniques to produce realistic and high-quality synthetic batik patterns. StyleGAN2-Ada is a variation of the GAN model that separates the style and content aspects in an image, whereas diffusion techniques introduce random noise into the data. In the context of batik, StyleGAN2-Ada and Diffusion are used to produce realistic synthetic batik patterns. This study also made adjustments to the model architecture and used a well-curated batik dataset. The main goal is to assist batik designers or craftsmen in producing unique and quality batik motifs with efficient production time and costs. Based on qualitative and quantitative evaluations, the results show that the model tested is capable of producing authentic and quality batik patterns, with finer details and rich artistic variations. The use of the Wasserstein loss function tends to produce batik motifs that are relatively new but less neat than the use of the StyleGAN2-Ada loss. The quality of the dataset also has a positive impact on the quality of the resulting batik patterns. Overall, this research contributes to the integration of Diffusion-GAN technology with traditional arts and culture, especially in the synthesis of batik motifs. However, there is still room for further development in increasing skill and accuracy in producing more detailed batik motifs. This article presents a miniaturized size Microstrip-patch sensor structure based on meander-line slot for water-quality and salinity measurement applications. The HFSS-software tool is employed to design and simulate the proposed sensor. The proposed sensor is printed on 60× 50× 1mm3 a dielectric material of FR-4 type. The meander-line slot resonator is inserted in the patch-sensor for miniaturize with the sensitivity enhancement. In order to contain the water sample that wants to be tested, a receptacle with dimensions of 47.75× 50× 4mm3 is mounted on the sensor structure. The receptacle is made from PTFE-Teflon dielectric material. The miniaturize sensor is noticed resonant at 2.74 GHz for unloaded-state. Furthermore, it's found resonant at;2.44 GHz, 2.49 GHz, and 2.5 GHz for DI-water, fresh-water and sea-water respectfully. The miniaturized-sensor is showed good sensing values that equals to 0.901 for DI-water, 0.751 for fresh-water, and 0.721 for Sea-water. Finally, a good agreement is showed between the measurement results and those from simulation. © 2023 IEEE.

Proportional counters filled with hydrogen are suitable for fast neutron detection and spectrometry. As their sensitivity is not limited only to this type of ionizing radiation as desired, an approach suitable for event discrimination was investigated. Several counters of the given construction were subjected to various radiation fields and the effort was directed to the examination of pulse-shape discrimination method intended to distinguish neutrons from gamma rays and parasitic events (microdischarges) if these also occurred. Rising edge duration of the output pulses and their amplitudes were mapped into diagrams enabling visual discrimination while the criteria for further computational processes are to be determined. Pulse waveforms from charge-sensitive preamplifier with the proportional counters connected were recorded using an FPGA-based custom-build acquisition unit and then post-processed. Moreover, the possibility of operation verification and energy calibration based on the introduction of helium-3 admixture into the gas filling was studied, as well as the energy resolution abilities. Also, the theoretical basis for particle discrimination is presented in the form of description of events and principles involved. © 2001-2012 IEEE.

Since CCTV technology was widely introduced as a video surveillance system, it has become very popular due to increased security concerns. However, detecting suspicious behavior is still done manually by humans, which is inefficient in terms of accuracy and manpower (prone to distraction and fatigue). Many studies use the entire frame of a video to recognize human action, whereas in this study first localize the area of object movement using the unsupervised inflated 3D (I3D) network which produces several frames that have been determined as the region of interest (ROI) from the total frames in the video. Then the collection of ROI frames is generated into a video which will then be classified to recognize human action through the Temporal Segment Networks (TSN). For efficiency purposes, the proposed pipeline can be run separately in the edge (for localization), and cloud environment (for recognition), respectively. The results show that there are 54 classes of ROI video data sets that have an average human action recognition prediction similarity rate above 84.6% which is the average of the prediction similarity rate of the entire ROI video data. In terms of prediction accuracy, 37 classes of data (36.63%) are better than the original class, including 25 classes of data (24.75%) above the threshold, and the processing speed of classification with ROI video data is on average 5 times faster than full-frame video data. © 2023 IEEE.

The paper describes the energy consumption from the battery based on the current measurements for various cases, i.e., speed (PWL adjustment) and loads. The main purpose of the research is to have additional and reliable information about power consumption and battery life estimation for autonomous guided vehicles (AGV). The authors propose a two-step algorithm. In the first step, a linear classifier was proposed. Then, the KNN classifier was tested;however, it did not give satisfactory results, so it was finally decided to use the random forest to estimate the load and PWL. The time domain current measurement is evaluated, and the beforementioned algorithms process the selected statistical measures. It has been proven that a two-step algorithm allows for achieving high accuracy. Based on the current observation, the paper is a good starting point for further investigation of the AGV because it is usually implemented in the AGV - so it does not require additional hardware. Moreover, it can lead to better energy management and increase battery lifetime. © 2023 IEEE.

The use of sensors in smart vehicles brings benefits and vulnerabilities. Different kinds of sensors in smart vehicles are vulnerable to cyber-attack. Until now, the investigation of challenges and solutions for in-vehicle cybersecurity hasn't discussed various sensor objects and their correlation. In this study, we studied the cyber security problems of sensors in smart vehicles and how to overcome them. The research was designed as Systematic Literature Review (SLR) using the Kitchenham methodology with modification in the filtering phase using the artificial intelligence application, Elicit, to identify the problems, conclusions, and methodology description. Seventeen publications from 2016 until 2023 were gained from five databases. As a result, we find that the most discussed object related to cybersecurity sensors on smart vehicles are Electronic Control Units. Spoofing and jamming is still the most addressed threat, and machine learning is the most utilized solution to be implemented in detection systems. Advanced detection systems are incorporating updated attack models. We also suggest using updated attack models and machine learning algorithms to ensure the safety and security of smart vehicle technology. All identified sensor technology correlated using mind maps under the Intelligent Transport System theory. © 2023 IEEE.
