A decision support system (DSS) is a computer-based tool used to improve decision-making capabilities for any organization by analyzing the available data. The heart-kidney (HK) model proposed in this paper, as a DSS, simulates the physiological processes of the heart and kidneys in the human body to support cancer detection. The first part of the HK algorithm is inspired by the functions of the heart, where blood molecules (solutions) are sent to the heart, simulating the processes of oxygenation and the pumping of oxygenated blood to the kidneys as a local search. The solutions generated by the heart are then fed into the kidney-inspired algorithm (KA), which performs filtration, reabsorption, secretion, and excretion. The heart component enhances the KA’s local search capability, guiding the algorithm toward optimal solutions. The HK model is evaluated on eight test functions, with results compared to those of the heart algorithm and KA alone. Additionally, the HK algorithm’s effectiveness as a decision support system is tested on benchmark classification and time series prediction problems, with statistical analysis against existing methods in the literature. Finally, the HK algorithm is applied to cancer detection from microRNA data, demonstrating its potential in optimizing decision-making processes in healthcare. © 2013 IEEE.

Navigating the world with visual impairments presents unique challenges, often limiting independence and safety. This research introduces SafeStride, a novel algorithm designed to empower visually impaired individuals through real-time obstacle detection and navigation assistance. SafeStride functions through five interconnected phases: sensor data acquisition, data preprocessing, obstacle detection, path planning, and feedback and guidance. A combination of ultrasonic sensors, cameras, and inertial measurement units (IMUs) feed comprehensive environmental data into the system, enabling accurate obstacle detection and safe path planning. Evaluating SafeStride's performance involved the MNIST dataset for image recognition and a dedicated indoor object detection dataset. Additionally, comparisons were made against three deep learning models—convolutional neural network (CNN), long short-term memory (LSTM), and gated recurrent unit (GRU). The results showcased SafeStride's high accuracy and effectiveness in both obstacle detection and classification. Beyond its impressive performance, SafeStride represents a significant leap forward in navigation aids for the visually impaired. By offering a comprehensive solution that enhances safety and independence in diverse environments, it holds immense potential to improve the lives of countless individuals. Future efforts will focus on further optimizing the algorithm and testing its real-world capabilities, paving the way for a future where safe and independent navigation becomes a reality for all. All three deep learning models (CNN, LSTM, GRU) excelled in the experiment, achieving high accuracy above 0.98, strong recall and F1-scores near 0.99, and exceptional AUC-ROC scores exceeding 0.9998. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2025.

The lithium battery (LIB) has emerged as a prominent area of research in energy and industrial applications, due to its superior energy density and efficient energy delivery capabilities. This study addresses the critical requirement for accurate State of Health (SOH) estimation as a significant challenge. The primary objective of this study is to utilize key battery health characteristic parameters to improve the accuracy and computational speed of SOH. Significant gaps have been identified in recent methodologies, particularly in terms of SOH estimation accuracy, computational speed, and simulation parameters. To address these limitations, a novel hybrid neural network (NN) approach is proposed, integrating octave convolution (OCT) and long short-term memory (LSTM). To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method in the optimization process, a comparative analysis is conducted against Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), OCT, LSTM, and CNN-LSTM architectures. The results indicate a significant reduction in the mean squared error (MSE), decreasing from 80.21 percent in CNN to 0.0758 percent in the proposed OCT-LSTM model. Furthermore, the root mean square error (RMSE) exhibits a substantial reduction of 64.91 percent and 58.14 percent compared to the LSTM and CNN-LSTM models, respectively. The simulation parameters used in this study were reduced from 41,228 for the CNN-LSTM model to 38,668 for the OCT-LSTM model. Empirical results show that the proposed method outperforms state-of-the-art methods in the number of parameters, MSE, RMSE, and estimation accuracy. These findings highlight the method's enhanced efficiency, computational speed, and precision, emphasizing its potential as a significant advancement in this domain. © 2025 IEEE.

With the advent of state-of-the-art computer and digital technology, modern civilisation has been immensely facilitated and optimised. The Internet of Things (IoT) has grown in importance in recent years, allowing us to monitor our physical environments and broadening our horizons. The "practice, science, or art" of farming is defined as tending to land, growing crops with the use of different tools and techniques, and then selling the harvested food. If farmers optimise their operations with the help of a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN), they will be able to work much more efficiently and effectively. Data aggregation involves collecting information from multiple sensors. The data aggregation process is optimised by applying metaheuristic techniques. A Genetic Algorithm (GA) is a method for modelling evolution that uses mutation, crossover, and natural selection as its building blocks. The key benefit of the Artificial Bee Colony (ABC) approach is that it simultaneously considers local and global search, and it doesn't get trapped calculating its local minima. Naturalistic algorithms like ALO model their hunting behaviour after that of ant-lions and doodlebugs. It manages to find a happy medium between exploration and exploitation with just one operator. Experimental evidences show that the proposed metaheuristic technique, ABC-ALO, which combines the best elements of Artificial Bee Colony and Ant Lion Optimisation, is superior to existing metaheuristic approaches in terms of lifetime computation, or the number of alive nodes at different round counts. © 2025

Effective recommender systems play a crucial role in accurately capturing user and item attributes that mirror individual preferences. Some existing recommendation techniques have started to shift their focus towards modeling various types of interactive relations between users and items in real-world recommendation scenarios, such as clicks, marking favorites, and purchases on online shopping platforms. Nevertheless, these approaches still grapple with two significant challenges: (1) Insufficient modeling and exploitation of the impact of various behavior patterns formed by multiplex relations between users and items on representation learning, and (2) ignoring the effect of different relations within behavior patterns on the target relation in recommender system scenarios. In this work, we introduce a novel recommendation framework, Dual-Channel Multiplex Graph Neural Network (DCMGNN), which addresses the aforementioned challenges. It incorporates an explicit behavior pattern representation learner to capture the behavior patterns composed of multiplex user-item interactive relations, and includes a relation chain representation learner and a relation chain-aware encoder to discover the impact of various auxiliary relations on the target relation, the dependencies between different relations, and mine the appropriate order of relations in a behavior pattern. Extensive experiments on three real-world datasets demonstrate that our DCMGNN surpasses various state-of-the-art recommendation methods. It outperforms the best baselines by 10.06% and 12.15% on average across all datasets in terms of Recall@10 and NDCG@10 respectively. Modulation Assessment With IQD Correction for Two-Way Sequential AAF Relaying Transmissions

Modulation assessment (MA) is a fundamental element in the development of adaptive radios that can interact effectively with their context to optimize resource usage. This assessment has been extensively studied in the literature over the past several decades. Nevertheless, there have been a few experiments conducted on relaying systems. Previous explorations of MA for relaying broadcasts have neglected the presence of in-phase and quadrature-phase discrepancies (IQD). However, these discrepancies exist in practical wireless transmissions due to manufacturing faults in the transceiver components, which can lead to substantial performance deterioration. In this paper, we create an original maximum-likelihood (ML) solution to the MA challenge in the circumstance of these discrepancies for amplify-and-forward (AAF) two-way sequential relaying transmissions (TWRT). By assuming that each terminal autonomously creates its own IQD, we depart a stage closer to effectively implementing transmissions in actual scenarios. We deploy an expectation-maximization (EM) tool to execute the indicated solution using an iterative approach. We take use of the data duplication inherent in AAF-TWRT signals to support the offered solution. During each repetition, the soft content provided by the detection procedure is utilized to develop the a posteriori expectations of the broadcast information. These expectations are then included in the assessment process as if they were known symbols. Additionally, the proposed solution involves a supplementary duty, which involves calculating the IQD parameters that are initially triggered at each terminal. The simulation results have validated the viability of the proposed architecture by demonstrating its superior MA performance compared to the standard ones. In the contemporary business landscape, software has evolved into a strategic asset crucial for organizations seeking sustainable competitive advantage. The imperative of ensuring software quality becomes evident as low-quality software systems pose formidable challenges to organizational performance. This study delves into the profound impact of three key dimensions of information system quality on organizational performance—information quality (IQ), quality of service (QoS), and software quality (SQ). Anchored in the DeLone and McLean information system (IS) success model, a quantitative questionnaire was administered to 360 industry experts and academics. Rigorous data analysis, employing exploratory factor analysis (EFA), confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), and structural equation modeling (SEM), revealed significant positive effects of all three quality dimensions on organizational performance. Among these dimensions, software quality emerged as the most influential, showcasing substantial total effects, closely followed by information and service qualities. The study underscores the tangible value derived from strategic investments in enhancing software, information, and service quality. Elevating these facets manifests as a catalyst for improved organizational performance, empowering decision-makers with accurate and timely information while enhancing user satisfaction with the system. This research contributes significantly to the IS success literature by empirically validating the synergistic relationship between information quality, service quality, software quality, and organizational outcomes. The systematic analysis offered in this study goes beyond theoretical validation, providing actionable insights for managers. The findings guide the prioritization of quality initiatives and resource allocation, enabling organizations to maximize competitive advantage. Liberated Arabic Handwritten Text Recognition using Convolutional Recurrent Neural Networks

Arabic script is exhibited in a cursive style, which is a departure from the norm in many common languages, and the shapes of letters are contingent on their positions within words. The form of the first letter is influenced by the subsequent letter, middle letters are shaped by both preceding and succeeding letters, and the shape of the final letter is determined by the preceding letter. Additionally, certain letters are found to have strikingly similar shapes, making Arabic text recognition a formidable challenge in computer vision. The challenge of detecting and recognizing Arabic handwritten text is addressed in this paper by proposing a novel system that integrates two Deep Learning models without the constraints of a predefined dictionary or language model. Object Detection techniques are employed in the first model to accurately identify lines, words, and punctuation marks, providing a robust foundation for text recognition. In the second model, a powerful recognition system is developed, trained on the IFN/ENIT dataset to predict character sequences from handwritten text images. The architecture is comprised of a convolutional neural network (CNN) with residual connections, followed by a Bi-directional Long Short-Term Memory (BLSTM) layer, and culminates in a fully connected layer. State-of-the-art results in unconstrained Arabic text recognition tasks are achieved by this approach. © 2025 The Author(s).

Recently, machine learning and various feature selection techniques have become popular for understanding the relationship between genes, molecular pathways, and diseases. Integrating existing domain knowledge into biological data analysis has demonstrated considerable potential for finding new biomarkers with translational uses. This paper presents PathDisGene, an innovative machine-learning tool that integrates existing domain knowledge by utilizing a Grouping-Scoring-Modeling (G-S-M) approach to discover associations among gene-pathway-disease. The first step in PathDisGene is the grouping component that associates genes according to their biological associations with diseases and pathways. This component uses the Comparative Toxicogenomics Database (CTD). Subsequently, the scoring component is applied to score each group and the highest-ranked groupings are then used to train the classifier. We test PathDisGene on ten GEO datasets and demonstrate its performance, where most of them are with high accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and AUC values across various diseases. The tool's capacity to recognize new pathway-disease associations and uncover connections between pathways and diseases along their associated genes underscores its potential as a significant asset in promoting precision medicine and systems biology. © 2025 by SCITEPRESS– Science and technology Publications, Lda.

High quality dehazed image and video based on enhanced multi-scale guided filtering dehazing technique

Haze is one of the most common challenges faced by outdoor imaging systems. Hazy images are characterized by low contrast and a white overlay, which make it difficult to produce high-quality results. To address this issue, researchers have developed various haze removal methods aimed at achieving superior image enhancement, efficient processing, and cost-effectiveness. This paper introduces an enhanced Multi-scale Guided Filtering (MGF) technique for dehazing. The proposed technique incorporates several key components: a fast dehazing method, homomorphic processing, and Contrast Limited Adaptive Histogram Equalization (CLAHE) as preprocessing steps, followed by a fuzzy logic approach to enhance contrast. The core of the technique is the MGF dehazing method, which is supported by fast dehazing and fuzzy logic proessing as enhancement strategies to reduce noise and improve the dynamic range of images. The MGF dehazing process gets the transmission map and atmospheric light at the coarsest level, and then guided filtering is employed iteratively to produce a smoothed transmission map, resulting in dehazed images free from artifacts. The haze model is applied to obtain the final dehazed image. This technique effectively combines two traditional approaches—fast dehazing and MGF dehazing—into a unified framework. The performance of the proposed technique is evaluated using visible and Near Infrared (NIR) video frames, as well as real hazy images. To demonstrate its efficacy, its results are compared with those of the standalone MGF dehazing method. Additionally, a comparative analysis is conducted with other dehazing techniques using both visible and NIR frames.
