Continuous flow blood pumps, such as axial flow and centrifugal pumps, have been gaining interest as circulatory devices for total artificial hearts (TAHs) and a biventricular assist device (BVAD) because of their smaller size and simpler structure compared to pulsatile pumps. However, continuous flow pumps are more prone to suction of the left ventricle than pulsatile pumps are. Sudden increases in flow rate to meet changes in physiological demand, especially in the left pump, often cause ventricle suction. In this study, a control algorithm to prevent suction from occurring in the left ventricle by controlling the rotational speed of the right pump, instead of reducing the cardiac output of the left pump, was developed and investigated. The method was tested in acute animal experiments with calves. The results indicate that this proposed method is capable of preventing suction and could simultaneously maintain circulatory control. A key advantage of this control system is that flow rates can be maximized while avoiding ventricle suction conditions particularly when the circulatory system is unstable such as in a the first few days after operation

Long hours of automobile driving under monotonous situations may cause the lowering of what we term a driver's activation state (DAS) or in other words the production of drowsiness, resulting in an increased risk of a traffic accident. There is therefore a need to create a newly advanced system focused on the DAS in-car, hopefully thus avoiding potentially dangerous situations. In order to develop such a system as a final goal, we have firstly set out to acquire such cardiovascular variables as beat-by-beat blood pressure (BP), RR interval from ECG and normalized pulse volume (NPV) used as a peripheral vascular tone of alpha-adrenergic sympathetic activity, during presentation to the driver of a screen movie simulating monotonous travel at constant speed on a test-course. Subsequently, we have investigated the reactivity in terms of the driver's cardiovascular hemodynamics. Through the successful monitoring of cardiovascular parameters during the movie presentation obtained in 11 healthy male subjects, the following results were obtained: The monotonous driving produces a statistically significant gradual rise in BP following drowsiness, which could be explained by enhancement of sympathetic activity using a time-frequency analysis of BP and RR. This finding strongly indicates that continuous driving in such monotonous situations can make a driver considerably stressful and thus may cause a gradual increase in BP, and that this gradual BP increase may be used as a possible index relevant to the DAS. This finding was also confirmed by the analysis of NPV, suggesting that the gradual increase in BP during the monotonous driving would be rather caused by a regulation of peripheral vasomotor constriction

The paper presents the e-learning project and the work until now developed for extending the features of the Italian remote laboratory "G. Savastano" to the academic circles of East Europe, Western Balkan and Mediterranean area. In particular, in the framework of the project "Italian-Croatian remote laboratory distributed on geographic network", the Italian-Croatian collaboration is highlighted. The proposed approach follows EU efforts to implement internal lifelong learning program and influence educational systems of EU partners and neighbor Countries while helping them to overcome problems with their own educational systems and lack of resources. Developed experiments, included in the remote laboratory, give the possibility of achieving practical experience on several fields, while multilingual approach gives the access to such facility to the students coming from different countries. Moreover, the idea of interactively controlled transfer of knowledge and experience offers new opportunities to the remote experiments enabling them to be executed without supervising necessity

This paper discusses the virtual prostate needle biopsy system and the construction of the virtual prostate model, considering the actual distribution of prostate abnormalities. A needle biopsy simulation is performed for the constructed virtual prostate, and the actual biopsy procedure in the clinical situation is evaluated. The prostate needle biopsy is a histologic diagnosis procedure in which a sample is acquired from the prostate tissue by needle biopsy and is inspected under a microscope. In order to achieve reliable prostate needle biopsy, it is necessary to consider systematically and numerically the number of needles required, and their locations and insertion angles. For such a purpose, a system is developed in which a virtual prostate is constructed on a computer and the biopsy procedure is evaluated quantitatively by performing virtually the prostate needle biopsy. Furthermore, two different models are constructed, for the prostate with and without hypertrophy, based on the actual statistical distribution data for prostate abnormalities. Each model is partitioned into the peripheral zone and the transition zone. The constructed virtual prostate is input into the virtual needle biopsy simulation system, and three different systematic biopsy procedures actually used at clinical sites, and four different needle biopsy procedures, are experimentally evaluated. The experiments show that the insertion angle that maximizes the hit probability is not always the same as the insertion angle that maximizes cancer sample acquisition. It is evident that the proposed method can indicate a biopsy procedure which realizes a high hit probability with a small number of needles. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

A member of the University of Idaho College of Engineering faculty. She graduated from the University of California at Davis. Frincke is the co-director and co-founder of the university's Center for Secure and Dependable Software (CSDS). She was the program chair for the 2nd International Workshop on Recent Advances in Intrusion Detection (RAID). A professor of Computer Science at the College of Integrated Science and Technology at James Madison University in Harrisonburg Virginia. He holds a Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Texas at Austin and a BA in philosophy from the University of Houston. Reynolds is the Director of Information System Security Education at James Madison University. Since 1997 Reynolds has led the development of the first remote Internet-based curriculum that leads to an M.S. degree in computer science with a concentration in information security. Thus far 160 students have completed this program. A professor of computer information systems at Idaho State University and the manager of its Simplot Decision Support Center.

Mobility support for Internet devices is very important, since mobile computing is getting more widespread. Since these devices are wireless and therefore mobile, they will derive great benefit form Mobile IPv6. Mobile IPv6 was designed to be a natural outgrowth of Mobile IPv4, just as IPv6 itself was designed to be a natural outgrowth of IPv4. A wireless test-bed was setup to see the performance of the handover. The wireless test-bed consists of hardware, software and network analyzes tools to monitor the handover operation. The hardware consists of a multicast router, 2 access point, home agent, mobile node. We analyzed packet loss, packet delay and handover delay in Mobile IPv6 wireless test-bed. Finally, it is concluded the average packet delay is 0.7s, the handover delay for the first handover (macro-mobility) is 4.4s (44 packet loss) and 4.2s (42 packet loss) during the second handover (micro-mobility). The behavior and performance of Mobile IPv6 scheme can be seen. © 2005 IEEE.

The swinging up control for a remotely driven Acrobot (RDA) is studied and an energy based controller is designed via the Lyapunov stability theory. The analysis of convergence of the energy as well as the motion of the RDA under the controller is presented. The conditions on control parameters for achieving a successful swinging up control are given. Furthermore, simulation and experimental results are provided to validate the presented theoretical results. Copyright © 2005 IFAC.

Ship hull form module is the main module in ship design. The problem of creating fair ship hull surface is of major importance in computer Aided Ship Design environment. The fairness of these surfaces is generally considered a subjective notion depending on the judgment of the designers (e.g. visually pleasing, devoid of unnecessary bumps or wiggles, satisfying certain continuity requirements). One of the restriction in ship hull design is that the existing details of a ship design on paper or a ship that already been constructed physically couldn't be reconstructed accurately and concisely in a ship hull design software. This problem can take on many different characteristics, depending on the goal of the reconstruction, the origin of the offset, and tools or methods available to tackle the job. All of these must be taken into account in developing the best approach to solving the problem in the most efficient manner. In this research, the implementation of NURBS method is used because it brings the most convincing results. © 2005 IEEE.

Billions of portable computing devices such as mobile phone, laptop and palmtop computers are becoming widely available. Since these devices are wireless and therefore mobile, they will derive great benefit form Mobile IPv6. The main goal of Mobile IPv6 is that a mobile node is always addressable by its home address, whether it is currently attached to its home link or is away from home. Mobile IPv6 enables applications running on an Internet node to survive physical reconnection by inserting a few additional features at the network layer In this paper focus is given on a micro-mobility base test-bed development with improved algorithm. The test-bed consists of both hardware and software including four personal computers and one laptop. Laptop is used as mobile host (MH), two personal computers is acting as access point, one personal computer becomes home agent (HA) and one personal computer is used as multicast router (ML). This test-bed is used to verify the theoretical enhancement of micromobility handover algorithm and results (packet loss, handover delay and quality of service). There is no signaling traffic overload between MH, HA and correspondent host (CH), low handover delay-approximately below I Oms and good reception of video stream. © 2005 IEEE.
