We evaluate an object on a computer display in place of the real object, for example in 3D CAD, WWW shopping and so on. This may be used on the assumption that the evaluation of the shape image in virtual space almost agrees with that of the real object in real space. In this paper, in order to clarify the difference of shape evaluation in virtual and real spaces, the performance of 3D shape images on a computer display and the real photoforming products made from the same data is evaluated in 30 subjects by the sensory evaluation of paired comparison. The 3D models used in the experiments are made from lip motion data that subjects have not seen before. The result tends to be preference for the same shape in both spaces, but there is significant difference in the relations of preference among shapes based on the Bradley-Terry model for the sensory evaluation, i.e., the matching of the model in real space is consistent whereas that on the display is inconsistent. This indicates that there is high possibility of disagreement between the evaluation in virtual space and that in real space.

Entrainment which forms the biological relation between talkers plays an important role in the smooth exchange of information. In this paper, the physiological entrainment of respiration between talkers is evaluated on the basis of burst-pause of speech, respiration and heart beat-to-beat interval as indices from the viewpoint that the respiratory entrainment would be a physiological main factor to make communication smooth in face-to-face interaction. By using the proposed physiological measurements of communication, the experiment is performed in adult face-to-face versus non-face-to-face communication. The existence of respiratory entrainment in face-to-face communication is demonstrated by the cross-correlation analysis of the indices. This finding suggests the entrainment is biologically essential to human communication and it can be applied to the human interface for the design and evaluation of face-to-face interaction support systems such as a teleconference system.

A new type of optical actuator is proposed by using the bimetal( Ni-Cr-Fe/36Ni-Fe ), which is to be developed for a optical micro-mechatronics system. The paper describes fundamental characteristics on a larger actuator both theoretically and experimentally. In order to identify some unknown parameters of the actuator, the results simulated by FEM are presented, and are compared with the experimental data. Furthermore, a numerical experiment on the optical micro-actuator is carried out to analyze step characteristic by FEM. Finally, the development of helical actuator is also provided.

In this paper, we propose an objective picture quality scale (PQSvideo) for video coding based on the MC + DCT coding algorithm. We employ average and maximum of several essential distortion factors such as Flicker, Jerky movement, Deformation of moving object and Mosquito noise, which are calculated from each frame of video sequence. For constructing PQSvideo, a principal component analysis is carried out to eliminate the correlation between distortion factors. Then, by assuming the linear combination model between principal components and Mean Opinion Score (MOS), the combination coefficients can estimate by a multiple regression analysis. PQSvideo closely approximates the MOS, with a correlation coefficient of more than 0.98 and a maximum absolute error is less than 0.43.

In this paper, we will pay attention to the spline wavelets which are real-type wavelets and have good characteristics such as compact support, the symmetric property and so on. We propose an RI-Spline wavelet which is complex-type wavelet and has the compact support, and we confirm the effectivity of this wavelet in the continuous case by a model signal. Next, for the application of the spline wavelets to control golf sound, we examine the relation between golf impact sound and vibration velocity of golf club. As a result, it is found that using the continuous and discrete wavelet transform together is effective for the analysis of the sound and the vibration. This technique will be useful for the unsteady signal analysis.

This paper presents a new technique to derive features for images that are translated, scaled equally/unequally and rotated. The problem is formulated using conventional regular moments. It is shown that the conventional regular moment-invariants remain no longer invariant when the image is scaled unequally in the x- and y-directions. A method is proposed to form moment-invariants that do not change under such unequal scaling. The newly formed moments are also invariant to translation and reflection. However, it is not invariant for images that are rotated. A neural network is trained to estimate the angle of rotation; it is then used to derive the invariant moments for images that are unequally scaled, translated and rotated. computer simulation results are also included to show the validity of the method proposed.

Since the layout compaction problem is dual to the minimum cost flow problem, flow algorithms can be applicable to the layout compaction. In this paper, an existing flow algorithm is investigated in terms of the layout compaction, and a fast flow algorithm is devised on the basis of the primal-dual method. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is the fastest dedicatedly for the compaction problem.

Usually, the subspace-based state-space system identification algorithms are focused on discrete-time models, which may cause some numerical problems when the sampling interval is small. This paper proposes an algorithm of subspace-based state-space system identification for continuous-time systems from sampled input-output data. The ω — operator ω = ( p - α)/( p + α) where p denotes a differential operator and α > 0, is introduced to avoid direct numerical differentiations. And the ω — operator state-space model identified by the 4SID method can be transformed back to the common continuous-time state-space model. The numerical superiority of the ω — operator approach compared to some other methods is verified through simulation study.

This paper is concerned with an application of a digital adaptive control system to a servo mechanism. Mechanical systems in general include nonlinearities and additional uncertainties and which result from inertia and friction. So it is difficult to ensure robust performance and high accuracy for motion control. The digital adaptive control system presented here is considered to overcome the above stated problem. Experimental results from a feed drive system demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme.

It is well-known that the angle dependent disturbances in a servo motor caused by nonuniformity of field windings, armature cogging, rotor imbalance, nonuniform load etc., may influence the speed control performance greatly. This often leads to large speed fluctuations which are undesired in practical situations. Therefore speed fluctuation reduction techniques in the presence of angle dependent disturbances are strongly required and have been being challenged by a lot of researchers. In this paper, the authors propose a new approach to this problem via adaptive control with the aid of a radial basis function (RBF) network composed of gaussian basis functions. The angle dependent disturbances which are viewed as a periodic nonlinear function with a period of 2π[rad] in the angle-domain, is approximated by a RBF network in the domain of [0, 2π)[rad]. Then an adaptive linearization control system employing the RBF network which compensates the disturbances is proposed. The RBF network has the advantage that it is linear-in-parameter and hence the parameter adaption is very fast and easy to implement. It is proved through theoretical analysis that the stability of the adaptive control is guaranteed by the Lyapunov stability theory. Finally, simulational and experimental results are included in the paper to show the excellent performance of the proposed method.
