A method is shown for estimating the three-dimensional shape from a silhouette outline. It is shown how such a shape can be estimated on the basis of symmetry analysis. This is a consistent analysis and is based on rigid geometry as well as rigid logic. It is particularly interesting that the method is based on division of the plane. The Voronoi diagram represents territories of the dots, and the Delaunay triangulation represents the neighboring relation of the dots. Thus, the proposed method analyzes the visual field, and this analysis seems to reflect the psychophysics of human vision. More important is the fact that the edges of the plane division never intersect with each other. Therefore, there arise no crossings among the lines connecting the symmetric dot pairs. In this sense, the method is stable and applicable to complex shapes.< >

Blind equalization of systems which contain a nonminimum phase component is a difficult task. Minimizing the energy (l/sub 2/ minimization) of the equalizer output (under a fixed tap constraint) cannot be guaranteed to open the eye (to reliably unscramble the message) because it tends to converge to an equalizer setting that contains a reflection of the unstable zeros inside the unit circle. It is shown that, in at least one simple setup involving a mixture of minimum and nonminimum phase elements, an l/sub infinity / minimization of the equalizer output is the appropriate criterion which should be minimized in order to successfully open the eye. Utilizing a finite impulse response equalizer constrained to have a unity coefficient on the center tap, it is shown that for a large enough dimension (depending on the closeness of the zeros of the channel to the unit circle) the eye will be opened. There is no simple (gradient) scheme to exactly implement the l/sub infinity / minimization. The use of a gradient l/sub p/ scheme for large p is proposed.< >

Kerr electro-optic field mapping measurements using the sensitive AC modulation method were made in liquid nitrogen. The steady-state electric fields between parallel stainless steel electrodes that had a gap of 7 mm are shown to be essentially uniform for voltages up to 70 kV with no significant space charge distortion. The Kerr constant B of liquid nitrogen is constant over the AC modulation frequency range of 1-20 kHz, while increasing above 20 kHz. This change of B with the modulation frequency coincides with the frequency-amplitude gain characteristic of the lock-in amplifier used, so that B is independent of the AC modulation frequency within the range of this study. B monotonically decreases with increasing temperature, T, thus decreasing liquid nitrogen density, rho , so that B is related linearly to rho /T. The polarizability anisotropy of liquid nitrogen is evaluated to be 8.3*10/sup -41/ F-m/sup 2/ from the slope of the B-( rho /T) characteristic, obtained from a simple physical model.< >

A fault analysis procedure is proposed for software development using JSP (Jackson structured programming). In the procedure, it is assumed that developers submit a fault report, which includes information (such as fault type, cause of fault and product) on actual fault correction activities. The procedure can identify the step in the JSP process at which fault might be introduced. Fault data are then collected from an experimental software development using JSP, and the procedure is applied to the data. The analysis result given by the proposed procedure can interpret the actual fault data quite well.< >

Basic research for the micro actuator using TiNi shape memory alloy (SMA) is conducted from the crystallographic point of view. SMA (TiNi) thin film is fabricated by sputter deposition. First, the influence of substrate temperature on crystal structure is verified by measuring resistivity-temperature curve and X-ray diffraction. Though high temperature substrate conditions make TiNi film in regular crystal, an amorphous structure appears at low substrate temperature. Next optimal composition of sputtered SMA thin film is found by SSQ. The negative slope of the resistivity curve due to phase transformation between R-phase and parent phase is observed. Finally, annealing methods are examined to crystallize amorphous TiNi.< >
