We have developed a new portable surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor with multi detection points, which consists a single LED and a linear CCD. The size and weight of this sensor are 170 mm (W) x 110 mm (D) x 150 mm (H) and 1.5 kg, respectively. The sensitivity of the SPR sensor is comparable to that of a conventional SPR sensor. A novel strategy for patterning antibodies inside a microchannel of the SPR sensor chip has also been developed for multi immunoassays. © 2007 CBMS.

An extended method of rough sets, called a method of weighted equivalence classes, is applied to a data table containing imprecise values expressed in a possibility distribution. An indiscerniblity degree between objects is calculated. A family of weighted equivalence classes is obtained via indiscernible classes from a binary relation for indiscernibility between objects. Each equivalence class in the family is accompanied by a possibilistic degree to which it is an actual one. By using the family of weighted equivalence classes we derive a lower approximation and an upper approximation. These approximations coincide with those obtained from methods of possible worlds. Therefore, the method of weighted equivalence classes is justified. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2007.

An autonomous robot and a mobile robot are expected to provide various services within the human living environment. But there are many problems to solve in trying to develop autonomous robots that can work like humans. Therefore, the environment for robot activity assumed in this study was a finite space such as a family room, an office, or a hospital room. So, accurate position estimation is important to the robot in achieving a success. Thus we have developed a navigation system that detects whether the robot is driving accurately using only a CCD camera in a room and a corridor. This paper describes that this systems are implemented and experimented with our developed robot.

In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in monitoring and analyzing dynamic performances of power systems, such as observation of power system oscillations and evaluation of machine parameters. However, in Japan, there was little observation as a whole power system. In this paper the authors present a global monitoring system of power system dynamics by using the synchronized phasor measurement of demand side. Authors have placed phasor measurement units (PMU) connected to 100 V outlets in some universities in Japan and been researching into oscillation characteristics in power systems. Phasor measurements are synchronized based on the global positioning system (GPS) and measurement data are transmitted via Internet. Some oscillative features and variation of phasor in a day, a week or a year are analyzed using the acquired data. The purpose of this paper is to show a power system dynamic performance by the use of measurement data at an unexpected disturbance and monitors a global and a local oscillation mode.

We have developed so far an automatic discrimination system of human sleep EEG stages based on a waveshape recognition method. These systems were able to detect discrete stages (stage MT, W, 1, 2, 3, 4, REM). However, they are not sufficient to extract much information in detail. Therefore, in order to extract more precise information for sleep stages, we have tried to analyze the sleep EEG in its time-frequency domain by employing a continuous wavelet transform based on Gabor wavelets. In this paper, a modified wavelet transform method is proposed. It has the feature that the damping coefficient of Gabor wavelets is adjusted by a sigmoid function. In the experiments, compared with the ordinary wavelet transform with some constant damping coefficients, it has been confirmed that the modified wavelet transform method can have the adequate frequency resolution for analyzing frequency components of sleep EEG.

Bias dependence of tunneling-electron-induced molecular fluorescence from porphyrin films on noble-metal substrates

We investigated scanning tunneling microscope (STM)-excited luminescence from porphyrin (PhTPP and H2TPP) thin films on metal substrate (Au and Ag) under ambient conditions. Molecular fluorescence similar to the corresponding photoluminescence was observed from PhTPP/Au and H2TPP∕Ag at both STM bias polarities. We found that at the same experimental condition and parameters, the STM-induced luminescence intensities of maxima peak are similar for PhTPP and H2TPP but weaker by a factor of about 4 than that for H2TBPP which we studied previously, probably due to fluorescence quenching by aggregation. The polarity dependence and the bias voltage dependence of the fluorescence intensity for the PhTPP/Au were similar to that for the respective pristine metal. These facts support our proposal that intense molecular fluorescence from porphyrin film on the noble metals is a result of the enhancement of molecular excitation by substrate surface plasmons.

The main focus of current research in trusted operating systems (TOS) is on the enhanced access control of reference monitors which, in turn, control the individual operations on a given access instance. However, many real-life runtime attacks involve behavioral semantics. We have proposed an extended reference monitor to support both access and behavior controls. This results in a sequence of operations which are also of concern in security enforcement. This paper presents a policy language for the extended reference monitor. Our policy language is based on domain and type enforcement (DTE) and role-based access control (RBAC). Permission is defined as an event and a state of behavior is represented as a fluent to be accorded with the convention of event calculus (EC). Behavior policies can be expressed with the EC style syntax as well as access control policies

Most wire communication systems utilize communication lines as power lines. The powered terminal needs to separate ac communication signals and dc supply power in its input part connected to the communication lines. In our communication system, it is preferable that the electronic choke be bidirectional. So, we have already proposed a low-loss electronic choke with small inductors and an amplifier. This circuit can be also used in the powering terminal. The electronic choke has high input impedance against communication signals. The frequency range of acceptable signals is determined mainly by resonance frequency of the inductors. In this paper, a method fitting this frequency range to the communication signal is proposed. To realize this, we introduce an inductor having new structure and external connection. By the effective use of electric coupling and magnetic coupling in windings, input impedance of the electronic choke is increased.

In the Port of Shibushi in Japan, problems arise due to long-period oscillations of moored ships when there is a typhoon located far offshore. To investigate the detailed processes of these oscillations and develop effective countermeasures, image processing, wave observations and numerical simulations were conducted. The image processing results showed obvious surging motions of large cargo vessels with a period of about 60-70 s. The results of wave observations showed the existence of waves with long periods of 60-70 s. Numerical simulations revealed that such long-period waves were generated when the peak period of incident waves was set to 120 s as observed. These findings show that small-scaled harbor oscillations occur inside the port. © 2007 World Scientific Publishing Co. Pte. Ltd.

Tinnitus is the perception of phantom sounds in the ears or in the head. Sound therapy techniques for tinnitus have been proposed. To account for mechanisms of tinnitus generation and the clinical effects of sound therapies from the viewpoint of neural engineering, we have proposed a plastic neural network model for the human auditory system. We found that this model has a bistable state, i.e., a stable oscillatory state and a stable equilibrium (non-oscillatory) state coexist at a certain parameter region. We also found that the oscillation can be inhibited by supplying sinusoidal stimulus, which is hypothesized as sound for treatment of tinnitus, to the model. By hypothesizing that the oscillation and the equilibrium correspond to generation and inhibition of tinnitus, respectively, we reported that these phenomena could explain the fact that the habituated human auditory system temporarily halts perception of tinnitus following sound therapy. This paper describes dynamical properties of the model and inhibition of the oscillation for two kinds of noise stimuli which correspond to sound for treatment of tinnitus in clinical. Through numerical simulations we found that adequate noise stimulus can inhibits the oscillation.
