The synaptic connections between frog retinal ganglion cells and tectal neurons were examined by whole-cell recordings in vivo combined with nystatin perforated patch-clamp technique and pulse-triggered averaging analysis. In five tectal neurons, monosynaptic EPSPs from seven R3 retinal ganglion cells were observed. One tectal neuron was found to receive EPSPs from both R1/2 and R3 retinal ganglion cell simultaneously. Thus we could provide the first evidence for convergence of multiple types of retinal axons upon a single tectal neuron.

This paper proposes an approach to acquire 3D models of objects with specular reflectance for graphics use. Highlight and rotation informations are employed in the model recovery. The authors control object rotation and extract motion of a highlight stripe, from which the object shape can be qualitatively inferred and quantitatively reconstructed by solving a first-order linear differential equation. In this paper, a quick identification method based on the short time record of input-output data is introduced for joint state and parameter estimation of nonlinear continuous-time systems. The method can then be used for on-line monitoring the system with unknown parameters. An application way of the method to main-steam temperature control of a thermal power plant are developed in the framework of model reference adaptive control system (MRACS). Simulation studies on a super-heater model have been carried out to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Three-dimensional (3D) shape recovery from a monocular image is the inverse process of optical projection and necessitates the use of additional constraints on 3D features of the objects. We have proposed the method of shape recovery based on some hypothetical constraints and its realization by energy minimization using a parallel network. In this paper, we will discuss an extension of our proposal with the aim of correcting noise and errors in an input image through the process of shape recovery. It is hardly possible to extract edges and vertexes free from noise and errors from a real image. For the robustness of the system, we must provide our system with the ability to correct such noise and errors. In this extension, we can also modulate the inclination of the process toward model-driven or data-driven.

We discuss recent progress in the understanding of the formation of patterns of snow crystals. In particular, we concentrate on the transition from hexagonal to dendritic patterns that occurs with an increase in the degree of supersaturation. Our numerical results demonstrate that the anisotropy of surface kinetics plays a very important role in the formation of faceted shapes of snow crystals in the form of hexagonal prisms and of facets seen at the tips of dendrites. Furthermore, it is shown that the conditions for the transition from a hexagonal to a dendritic pattern are given by the supersaturation and the dimensionless crystal size relative to the mean free path of a water molecule in air.

To determine the usefulness of equations previously proposed for the apparent maximum reaction rate and apparent Michaelis constant of an immobilized enzyme, starch hydrolysis by glucoamylase immobilized on a porous ceramic support was considered as a model system. Initial reaction rates, v0, were measured for a wide range of initial starch concentrations, S(b0), to make a nonlinear plot Of S(b0)/v0 versus S(b0), and the apparent kinetic parameters were determined from the slopes and intercepts of tangents to the nonlinear plot at given values of S(b0). The equations were found to accurately express the diffusional effect on the kinetic parameters.

The growth process of Fe/FeN multilayers prepared by rf sputtering is studied in situ, combining resistivity measurements and RHEED observations. The structural change from semi-continuous film with random orientation to continuous film with preferred orientation is detected during growth. Alternate growth of the (110)-oriented Fe layer and the (200)-oriented FeN layer are observed.
