A type of miniature linear actuators called a cybernetic actuator for biomedical applications is described. This actuator has four driving states: free, increasing, decreasing, and lock. The free and lock states can release excessive applied load from outside to provide safety characteristics for both human and micromechanisms. Miniaturized linear cybernetic actuators combining a piezoelectric impact drive with electromagnetic clamping were designed and developed. Feasibility and basic performance of the actuators were confirmed by theory and experiments. Improved performance in terms of maximum speed, energy efficiency, and silent drive as a miniature linear actuator were verified successfully by using a controlled friction impact drive.< >

The authors present an approximate analysis of an asymmetric token ring network with nonpreemptive priority under a new discipline named the go-back-to-higher-priority discipline. This discipline is described and the token ring network is analysed on the basis of the independent hypothesis for the distribution of the cycle time. Then, probabilities for the number of messages at the token's arrival, a mean cycle time, a mean intervisit time of the token and a mean waiting time of messages for each priority level are obtained. To calculate the mean waiting time for a lower priority level, a root of the denominator of the generating function plays an important role. In some numerical examples with simulation results, the mean waiting time for the go-back-to-higher-priority discipline is compared with that for an asymmetric token ring network with nonpreemptive priority under a one-limited discipline.< >

The authors consider the design of a discrete time model reference adaptive control system (MRACS) for motion control systems with unknown nonlinear friction. From a control system viewpoint, the static and Coulomb frictions are characterized by a nonlinear dead-zone element and constant value disturbance for the control input signal, respectively. The discrete MRACS is considered for a nonlinear system which is a cascade combination of an unknown dead-zone block and a linear dynamic block with disturbance. In order to verify the validity of the theory, the design method described is applied to a servo system influenced by friction. Experimental results show the high control performance of the constructed MRACS and the effectiveness of the proposed method.< >
