Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness, affecting millions of people worldwide. It is a chronic eye condition that damages the optic nerve and, if left untreated, can lead to vision loss and a decreased quality of life. Therefore, there is a need to explore practical and reliable mechanisms for glaucoma identification. This study systematically reviews deep-learning approaches for glaucoma identification using retinal fundus images from 2018 to 2024. Compared to existing survey studies, we cover the latest research, including several public retinal fundus image datasets, and focus on segmentation, classification based on convolutional neural networks and vision transformers, and explainability. The findings of this study, including comparisons of existing methods and key insights, will assist researchers and developers in identifying the most suitable techniques for glaucoma detection. © 2025 The Authors

Neuronal signals generally represent activation of the neuronal networks and give insights into brain functionalities. They are considered as fingerprints of actions and their processing across different structures of the brain. These recordings generate a large volume of data that are susceptible to noise and artifacts. Therefore, the review of these data to ensure high quality by automatically detecting and removing the artifacts is imperative. Toward this aim, this work proposes a custom-developed automatic artifact removal toolbox named, SANTIA (SigMate Advanced: a Novel Tool for Identification of Artifacts in Neuronal Signals). Developed in Matlab, SANTIA is an open-source toolbox that applies neural network-based machine learning techniques to label and train models to detect artifacts from the invasive neuronal signals known as local field potentials. © 2021, The Author(s).

How to induce rules from data tables containing possibilistic information is described under using rough sets based on possible world semantics. A piece of possibilistic information is expressed in a normal and discrete possibility distribution. Under a degree of possibility, the incomplete data table is derived from a possibilistic data table. Rough sets and rules are derived from incomplete data tables. The rough sets and rules obtained under every degree of possibility are aggregated from the viewpoints of certainty and possibility. As a result, rough sets consist of objects with a degree expressed in an interval and an object also supports rules with a degree expressed in an interval value. Furthermore, a criterion is introduced to judge whether or not an object is regarded as validly supporting rules. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2019.

Learning from natural bacteria flagellum, we demonstrate a magnetic polymer multilayer conical microrobot that bestow the controllable propulsion upon external rotating magnetic field with uniform intensity. The magnetic microrobots were constructed by template-assisted Layer-by-Layer technique technique and subsequent functionalization of magnetic particle onto the big opening of the microrobots. Geometric variables of the polymer microrobots, such as the diameter and wall thickness, can be controlled by selection of porous template and layers of assembly. The microrobots perform controllable propulsion through the manipulation of magnetic field. The comparative analysis of the movement behavior reveals that the deformation of microrobots may attributed to the propulsion upon rotating magnetic field, which is similar as that of natural bacteria. The influence of actuation frequencies and frequencies on the velocity of the microrobots is studied. Such use of polymer polymer multilayer tubular micro/nanoarchitectures results in significant savings in the processing costs and provides a simple and cost-effective fabrication route for the mass production of magnetic polymer microrobots. © 2024, The Authors. One of the objectives of Visual IoT is to realize safe and secure society via remote video transmission. Low-cost cameras play an important role since we need to distribute many cameras in the society. To achieve wide coverage of monitoring with single IP network camera, remote PTZ (Pan-Tilt-Zoom) function is one of the preferable solutions that is installed in IP network camera at high location such as at the top of mountains. In this paper we propose techniques of PTZ remote control of low-cost IP cameras for Visual IoT systems over mobile networks. At first, one of the regulations of PTZ remote-control, ONVIF (Open Network Video Interface Forum) Profile S, is introduced for remote operations over IP networks. We then design and implement remote ONVIF commands in our Visual IoT system. Finally the system performances are examined in both laboratory environment and outdoor fields. The remote PTZ operations is practically successful while issues are discussed to achieve area monitoring with a high precision using low-cost IP network cameras.

Humans continual learning (CL) ability is closely related to Stability Versus Plasticity Dilemma that describes how humans achieve ongoing learning capacity and preservation for learned information. The notion of CL has always been present in artificial intelligence (AI) since its births. This paper proposes a comprehensive review of CL. Different from previous reviews that mainly focus on the catastrophic forgetting phenomenon in CL, this paper surveys CL from a more macroscopic perspective based on the Stability Versus Plasticity mechanism. Analogous to biological counterpart, "smart" AI agents are supposed to i) remember previously learned information (information retrospection);ii) infer on new information continuously (information prospection:);iii) transfer useful information (information transfer), to achieve high-level CL. According to the taxonomy, evaluation metrics, algorithms, applications as well as some open issues are then introduced. Our main contributions concern i) rechecking CL from the level of artificial general intelligence;ii) providing a detailed and extensive overview on CL topics;iii) presenting some novel ideas on the potential development of CL. © 2021, CC BY.

The coronavirus (COVID-19) is currently the most common contagious disease which is prevalent all over the world. The main challenge of this disease is the primary diagnosis to prevent secondary infections and its spread from one person to another. Therefore, it is essential to use an automatic diagnosis system along with clinical procedures for the rapid diagnosis of COVID-19 to prevent its spread. Artificial intelligence techniques using computed tomography (CT) images of the lungs and chest radiography have the potential to obtain high diagnostic performance for Covid-19 diagnosis. In this study, a fusion of convolutional neural network (CNN), support vector machine (SVM), and Sobel filter is proposed to detect COVID-19 using X-ray images. A new X-ray image dataset was collected and subjected to high pass filter using a Sobel filter to obtain the edges of the images. Then these images are fed to CNN deep learning model followed by SVM classifier with ten-fold cross validation strategy. This method is designed so that it can learn with not many data. Our results show that the proposed CNN-SVM with Sobel filtering (CNN-SVM+Sobel) achieved the highest classification accuracy of 99.02% in accurate detection of COVID-19. It showed that using Sobel filter can improve the performance of CNN. Unlike most of the other researches, this method does not use a pre-trained network. We have also validated our developed model using six public databases and obtained the highest performance. Hence, our developed model is ready for clinical application. Although rice cultivation is one of the most important agricultural sources of methane (CH4) and contributes ∼8% of total global anthropogenic emissions, large discrepancies remain among estimates of global CH4 emissions from rice cultivation (ranging from 18 to 115 Tg CH4 yr−1) due to a lack of observational constraints. The spatial distribution of paddy-rice emissions has been assessed at regional-to-global scales by bottom-up inventories and land surface models over coarse spatial resolution (e.g., > 0.5°) or spatial units (e.g., agro-ecological zones). However, high-resolution CH4 flux estimates capable of capturing the effects of local climate and management practices on emissions, as well as replicating in situ data, remain challenging to produce because of the scarcity of high-resolution maps of paddy-rice and insufficient understanding of CH4 predictors. Here, we combine paddy-rice methane-flux data from 23 global eddy covariance sites and MODIS remote sensing data with machine learning to 1) evaluate data-driven model performance and variable importance for predicting rice CH4 fluxes;and 2) produce gridded up-scaling estimates of rice CH4 emissions at 5000-m resolution across Monsoon Asia, where ∼87% of global rice area is cultivated and ∼ 90% of global rice production occurs. Our random-forest model achieved Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency values of 0.59 and 0.69 for 8-day CH4 fluxes and site mean CH4 fluxes respectively, with land surface temperature, biomass and water-availability-related indices as the most important predictors. We estimate the average annual (winter fallow season excluded) paddy rice CH4 emissions throughout Monsoon Asia to be 20.6 ± 1.1 Tg yr−1 for 2001–2015, which is at the lower range of previous inventory-based estimates (20–32 CH4 Tg yr−1). Our estimates also suggest that CH4 emissions from paddy rice in this region have been declining from 2007 through 2015 following declines in both paddy-rice growing area and emission rates per unit

We develop two types of simple population-based search algorithms that model two types of scale-free behaviors of individuals. The scale-free behavior is a particular behavior of individuals of species that search for food not cooperatively but independently. One type of the scale-free behaviors is that a moving distance of an individual from the present food source follows a power low distribution, which is called the spatial scale-free behavior. The other is that a staying duration of an individual at the preset food source follows a power low distribution, which is called the temporal scale-free behavior. We assume static and dynamic problems in which a position of the best food source (the global optimum) is not changed and changed, respectively. In addition, we assume a special event that individuals near the best food source are probabilistically eliminated. We compare the two search algorithms and show that they are complementary with respect to suitable problems. Therefore, we develop a search algorithm that initially includes both types of individuals in a population and evolutionarily adaptively increases an appropriate type of individuals in it. The algorithm is shown to be not the best but work quite well for any problems used.

This study proposes a non-contact measurement method for detecting a micro tool tip position at a nanometre precision in atmospheric environment as a non-contact tool setter. Particularly, to measure rotating small tools, optical measurement method are applied in non-contact tool setters. However, the generally used geometrical optical measurement methods do fundamentally not have nanometre precision due to the well-known light diffraction phenomenon, notably when measuring a micro tool. Furthermore, the non-contact tool setter for measuring a rotating micro tool has been indispensable because the position of a tool tip during rotation is different from the position of a static tool. The precision of tool position non-contact measurement is definitely required in nanometre scale due to the miniaturization of micro rotating tool size down to smaller than 50 μm. An evanescent light field is applied to detect a micro tool tip position in nanometre scale without contacting between a micro tool and a reference surface. In this paper, non-rotation micro tools with diameter of 50 μm were experimentally approached to and/or departed from a reference surface of a plano-convex lens by a nano-controlled piezo actuator to verify our proposed detection method. Consequently, the tool tips were recognised in the evanescent field during 300 nm range (or the evanescent field effective penetration depth) from the reference surface. It implies that the tool tip position could be detected more precisely than ±150 nm by only recognising the scattering light from the evanescent light field without tool contacting. © 2018 CURRAN-CONFERENCE.
