A search for the nonresonant production of Higgs boson pairs in the HH→bb¯τ+τ− channel is performed using 140 fb−1 of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The analysis strategy is optimized to probe anomalous values of the Higgs boson self-coupling modifier κλ and of the quartic HHVV (V=W,Z) coupling modifier κ2V. No significant excess above the expected background from Standard Model processes is observed. An observed (expected) upper limit μHH<5.9(3.3) is set at 95% confidence-level on the Higgs boson pair production cross section normalized to its Standard Model prediction. The coupling modifiers are constrained to an observed (expected) 95% confidence interval of −3.1<κλ<9.0 (−2.5<κλ<9.3) and −0.5<κ2V<2.7 (−0.2<κ2V<2.4), assuming all other Higgs boson couplings are fixed to the Standard Model prediction. The results are also interpreted in the context of effective field theories via constraints on anomalous Higgs boson couplings and Higgs boson pair production cross sections assuming different kinematic benchmark scenarios.

This Letter presents the first study of Higgs boson production in association with a vector boson (V=W or Z) in the fully hadronic qqbb final state using data recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at s=13 TeV and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb−1. The vector bosons and Higgs bosons are each reconstructed as large-radius jets and tagged using jet substructure techniques. Dedicated tagging algorithms exploiting b-tagging properties are used to identify jets consistent with Higgs bosons decaying into bb¯. Dominant backgrounds from multijet production are determined directly from the data, and a likelihood fit to the jet mass distribution of Higgs boson candidates is used to extract the number of signal events. The VH production cross section is measured inclusively and differentially in several ranges of Higgs boson transverse momentum: 250–450, 450–650, and greater than 650 GeV. The inclusive signal yield relative to the standard model expectation is observed to be μ=1.4−0.9+1.0 and the corresponding cross section is 3.1±1.3(stat)−1.4+1.8(syst) pb.

A search for a new Z′ gauge boson predicted by Lμ−Lτ models, based on charged-current Drell–Yan production, pp→W±(*)→Z′μ±ν→μ±μ∓μ±ν, is presented. The data sample used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb−1 of proton–proton collisions at s=13 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The search examines a final state of 3μ plus large missing transverse momentum. Upper limits are set on the Z′ production cross section times branching ratio in the mass range of 5–81 GeV. After combining with the previous Z′ search using the neutral-current Drell–Yan production with a 4μ final state, the most stringent exclusion limits to date are achieved in the parameter space of the Z′ coupling strength and mass.

A search for the single production of a vectorlike top partner (T) with mass greater than 1 TeV decaying into a Z boson and a top quark is presented, using the full Run 2 dataset corresponding to 139 fb−1 of pp collisions at s=13 TeV, collected in 2015–2018 with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The targeted final state is characterized by the presence of a pair of electrons or muons with opposite-sign charges which form a Z-boson candidate, as well as by the presence of b-tagged jets and forward jets. Events with exactly two or at least three leptons are categorized into two independently optimized analysis channels. No significant excess above the background expectation is observed and the results from the two channels are statistically combined to set exclusion limits at 95% confidence level on the masses and couplings of T. The results are interpreted in several benchmark scenarios to set limits on the mass and universal coupling strength (κ) of the vectorlike quark. For singlet T quarks, κ values between 0.22 and 0.64 are excluded for masses between 1000 and 1975 GeV. For T quarks in the doublet scenario, where the production cross section is much lower, κ values between 0.54 and 0.88 are excluded for masses between 1000 and 1425 GeV.

The luminosity determination for the ATLAS detector at the LHC during Run 2 is presented, with pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy $$\sqrt{s}=13$$ TeV. The absolute luminosity scale is determined using van der Meer beam separation scans during dedicated running periods in each year, and extrapolated to the physics data-taking regime using complementary measurements from several luminosity-sensitive detectors. The total uncertainties in the integrated luminosity for each individual year of data-taking range from 0.9% to 1.1%, and are partially correlated between years. After standard data-quality selections, the full Run 2 pp data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of $$140.1\pm 1.2$$ $$\hbox {fb}^{-1}$$ , i.e. an uncertainty of 0.83%. A dedicated sample of low-pileup data recorded in 2017–2018 for precision Standard Model physics measurements is analysed separately, and has an integrated luminosity of $$338.1\pm 3.1$$ $$\hbox {pb}^{-1}$$ .

Searches for new resonances are performed using an unsupervised anomaly-detection technique. Events with at least one electron or muon are selected from 140 fb−1 of pp collisions at s=13 TeV recorded by ATLAS at the Large Hadron Collider. The approach involves training an autoencoder on data, and subsequently defining anomalous regions based on the reconstruction loss of the decoder. Studies focus on nine invariant mass spectra that contain pairs of objects consisting of one light jet or b jet and either one lepton (e,μ), photon, or second light jet or b jet in the anomalous regions. No significant deviations from the background hypotheses are observed. Limits on contributions from generic Gaussian signals with various widths of the resonance mass are obtained for nine invariant masses in the anomalous regions.

ATLAS measured the centrality dependence of the dijet yield using 165 nb−1 of p+Pb data collected at sNN=8.16 TeV in 2016. The event centrality, which reflects the p+Pb impact parameter, is characterized by the total transverse energy registered in the Pb-going side of the forward calorimeter. The central-to-peripheral ratio of the scaled dijet yields, RCP, is evaluated, and the results are presented as a function of variables that reflect the kinematics of the initial hard parton scattering process. The RCP shows a scaling with the Bjorken x of the parton originating from the proton, xp, while no such trend is observed as a function of xPb. This analysis provides unique input to understanding the role of small proton spatial configurations in p+Pb collisions by covering parton momentum fractions from the valence region down to xp∼10−3 and xPb∼4×10−4.

This paper presents a measurement of fiducial and differential cross-sections for $$W^{+}W^{-}$$ production in proton–proton collisions at $$\sqrt{s}=13$$ TeV with the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider using a dataset corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb $$^{-1}$$ . Events with exactly one electron, one muon and no hadronic jets are studied. The fiducial region in which the measurements are performed is inspired by searches for the electroweak production of supersymmetric charginos decaying to two-lepton final states. The selected events have moderate values of missing transverse momentum and the ‘stransverse mass’ variable $$m_{\textrm{T2}}$$ , which is widely used in searches for supersymmetry at the LHC. The ranges of these variables are chosen so that the acceptance is enhanced for direct $$W^{+}W^{-}$$ production and suppressed for production via top quarks, which is treated as a background. The fiducial cross-section and particle-level differential cross-sections for six variables are measured and compared with two theoretical SM predictions from perturbative QCD calculations.

Traveling waves and worms in ac-driven electroconvection under external multiplicative noise

In the presence of external multiplicative noise, ac-driven electroconvection (EC) in a nematic liquid crystal is investigated. Noise-induced traveling waves (TWs) including localized ones (worms) are found with a typical, stationary wave. Three kinds of TWs are classified by their dynamic features (e.g., noise-intensity-dependent Hopf frequency and space-time map). Moreover, ac frequency-dependent threshold voltages of EC are examined in high noise intensities causing abnormal charge redistribution of the EC cell, and the roles of ac and noise fields with respect to TWs are elucidated in successive pattern evolutions. The mechanism of TWs is discussed in terms of a locally perturbed dynamic conductivity due to the noise field additionally applied to the EC; such a conductivity can be related to a weak-electrolyte model for a Hopf bifurcation to a TW.
