In the membrane computing, the exponential number of membranes is usually used for computationally hard problems to create exhaustive solutions. However, the number of membranes means the number of cells, and reduction of the number of membranes must be considered because the cells cannot be created exponentially. In the paper, we propose an asynchronous P system for Hamiltonian cycle using with branch and bound to reduce the number of membranes. In addition, we evaluate the number of membrane used in the known and the proposed P systems with experimental simulations. The experimental results show validity and efficiency of the proposed P system.

Online robust and adaptive learning from data streams

In online learning from non-stationary data streams, it is necessary to learn robustly to outliers and to adapt quickly to changes in the underlying data generating mechanism. In this paper, we refer to the former attribute of online learning algorithms as robustness and to the latter as adaptivity. There is an obvious tradeoff between the two attributes. It is a fundamental issue to quantify and evaluate the tradeoff because it provides important information on the data generating mechanism. However, no previous work has considered the tradeoff quantitatively. We propose a novel algorithm called the stochastic approximation-based robustness-adaptivity algorithm (SRA) to evaluate the tradeoff. The key idea of SRA is to update parameters of distribution or sufficient statistics with the biased stochastic approximation scheme, while dropping data points with large values of the stochastic update. We address the relation between the two parameters: one is the step size of the stochastic approximation, and the other is the threshold parameter of the norm of the stochastic update. The former controls the adaptivity and the latter does the robustness. We give a theoretical analysis for the non-asymptotic convergence of SRA in the presence of outliers, which depends on both the step size and threshold parameter. Because SRA is formulated on the majorization-minimization principle, it is a general algorithm that includes many algorithms, such as the online EM algorithm and stochastic gradient descent. Empirical experiments for both synthetic and real datasets demonstrated that SRA was superior to previous methods. As SRA is based on assumptions that an abrupt change occurs in parameters or sufficient statistics of true distribution and that noisy distribution obeys the uniform distribution, it would be expected for SRA to be theoretically guaranteed in more general settings, such as incremental (gradual) changes and other noisy distributions. Big data-driven target identification by machine learning: DRD2 as a therapeutic target for psoriasis

Background: The development of medical treatments has traditionally relied on researchers leveraging scientific knowledge to hypothesize disease mechanisms and identify therapeutic agents. However, the depletion of novel therapeutic targets has become a significant challenge, resulting in stagnation within pharmaceutical research. Objective: To address the scarcity of therapeutic targets, we developed a machine learning (ML)-based system capable of predicting therapeutic target molecules for diseases. To validate its utility, we applied this system to psoriasis, aiming to identify novel treatment strategies. Methods: Our approach utilized a large clinical database to calculate reporting odds ratios for all drugs associated with the prevention of diseases of interest. We identified target proteins by analyzing large chemical structure databases to discover proteins commonly associated with preventive drug candidates. Experimental validation was conducted by administering a predicted therapeutic candidate in an imiquimod-induced psoriasis mouse model. Results: The ML-based predictions identified drugs for Parkinson's disease as potential preventive candidates for psoriasis. Further analysis highlighted dopamine receptor D2 (DRD2) as a therapeutic target. Administration of a DRD2 agonist alleviated psoriasis symptoms in mice, evidenced by the downregulation of mRNA expression in the IL-17 pathway and reduced serum tumor necrosis factor-α levels. Conclusion: This study demonstrates the utility of a novel ML-based system for identifying therapeutic targets, as shown by its successful application in uncovering the role of DRD2 in psoriasis. Beyond psoriasis, this system offers significant potential for exploring pathological mechanisms and discovering therapeutic targets across various diseases. © 2025 The Authors

One of the objectives of Visual IoT is to realize safe and secure society via remote video transmission. Low-cost cameras play an important role since we need to distribute many cameras in the society. To achieve wide coverage of monitoring with single IP network camera, remote PTZ (Pan-Tilt-Zoom) function is one of the preferable solutions that is installed in IP network camera at high location such as at the top of mountains. In this paper we propose techniques of PTZ remote control of low-cost IP cameras for Visual IoT systems over mobile networks. At first, one of the regulations of PTZ remote-control, ONVIF (Open Network Video Interface Forum) Profile S, is introduced for remote operations over IP networks. We then design and implement remote ONVIF commands in our Visual IoT system. Finally the system performances are examined in both laboratory environment and outdoor fields. The remote PTZ operations is practically successful while issues are discussed to achieve area monitoring with a high precision using low-cost IP network cameras.

Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) has been increasingly used in wireless broadband communication systems. Guard interval (GI) is used in OFDM system to reduce inter-symbol interference (ISI). As selection of the length of guard interval depends on the channel condition, the length of guard interval will change dynamically. Thus there must be a way to synchronize this parameter between the transmitter and the receivers. Traditional OFDM systems require a transmitter to notify its receivers using additional signal and thus result additional bandwidth. However, the length of guard interval is usually fixed in conventional OFDM system, which decreases the power and spectrum efficiency considerably, especially in a mobile environment. To solve this problem, an OFDM system with variable guard interval is proposed in this paper. This system first utilizes the preamble and pilot sub-carriers of each OFDM packet burst to estimate the channel RMS delay spread, and then the result is fed into the guard interval controller. Then, the controller uses a criterion to calculate the guard interval and control the OFDM transmitter.

In this paper, we will discuss properties of different computational methods of the logistic map over integers. We will give four computational methods of the map in order to implement the map on a computer with limited memories, and then will evaluate average processing times and lengths of sequences generated by these methods. By these results, we will provide a constructive use of these four computational methods of the logistic map over integers for a design of the pseudorandom number generator. © 2018 IEICE.

This paper shows a PI-D controller design method with a finite number of frequency responses(FNFR) model so that it stabilizes a closed-loop system and matches a transfer function of the closed-loop system to that of ideal model. In this paper FNFR model is introduced with a ratio of the discrete Fourier transformation of input and output signals. The main contribution of this paper is to propose a method to reduce the control problem to a convex optimization problem. The efficiency of the method with FNFR model is shown through experimental results via a magnetic levitation system © 2019 The institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.

The isotopic compositions of samples returned from Cb-type asteroid Ryugu and Ivuna-type (CI) chondrites are distinct from other carbonaceous chondrites, which has led to the suggestion that Ryugu/CI chondrites formed in a different region of the accretion disk, possibly around the orbits of Uranus and Neptune. We show that, like for Fe, Ryugu and CI chondrites also have indistinguishable Ni isotope anomalies, which differ from those of other carbonaceous chondrites. We propose that this unique Fe and Ni isotopic composition reflects different accretion efficiencies of small FeNi metal grains among the carbonaceous chondrite parent bodies. The CI chondrites incorporated these grains more efficiently, possibly because they formed at the end of the disk’s lifetime, when planetesimal formation was also triggered by photoevaporation of the disk. Isotopic variations among carbonaceous chondrites may thus reflect fractionation of distinct dust components from a common reservoir, implying CI chondrites/Ryugu may have formed in the same region of the accretion disk as other carbonaceous chondrites. © 2024, CC BY.

Uncovering why deep neural networks lack robustness: Representation metrics that link to adversarial attacks

Neural networks have been shown vulnerable to adversarial samples. Slightly perturbed input images are able to change the classification of accurate models, showing that the representation learned is not as good as previously thought. To aid the development of better neural networks, it would be important to evaluate to what extent are current neural networks' representations capturing the existing features. Here we propose a test that can evaluate neural networks using a new type of zero-shot test, entitled Raw Zero-Shot. This test is based on the principle that some features are present on unknown classes and that unknown classes can be defined as a combination of previous learned features without learning bias. To evaluate the soft-labels of unknown classes, two metrics are proposed. One is based on clustering validation techniques (Davies-Bouldin Index) and the other is based on soft-label distance of a given correct soft-label. Experiments show that such metrics are in accordance with the robustness to adversarial attacks and might serve as a guidance to build better models as well as be used in loss functions to improve the models directly. Interestingly, the results suggests that dynamic routing networks such as CapsNet have better representation while some DNNs might be trading off representation quality for accuracy. The training of embedded software engineers in educational institutions is required for embedded systems companies. We focus on computer architecture education for learning about the operations and architectures of processors. We use the Kyutech Easily Reconstructive Naked Educational (KERNEL) system, which was designed for computer architecture education. The KERNEL system enables users to observe the internal architecture and states of processors during execution. It helps beginners to learn the basics of a computer architecture by writing their programs into the KERNEL memory so they can observe the processor's execution. This paper describes a field-programmable gate array (FPGA)-based educational system cooperating with mobile applications, and offers a performance evaluation of its wireless communications. The system consists of an FPGA board implemented with one's own K16 model processor that designed for computer hardware educations in the KERNEL system and mobile applications that become a console for setting and displaying the internal state of the processor. It is possible for users to write their programs, set registers in the processor, and observe the internal state of the processor during execution by using a mobile application. Communications between the FPGA and the mobile application uses classic Bluetooth and Bluetooth Low Energy technology. © 2018 The institute of Electronics and Information Engineers.
