Membrane computing, which is a computational model based on cell activity, has considerable attention as one of new paradigms of computations. In the membrane computing, the asynchronous parallelism must be considered to make the membrane computing more realistic. We propose an asynchronous P system that solves the maximum satisfiability problem (MAX-SAT) with n variables and m clauses. The proposed P system computes MAX-SAT in O(mn2 n ) sequential steps or O(mn) parallel steps using O(mn) kind of objects and evolution rules of size O(m 2 n).

Kenaf fiber like other natural fibers is used as a sustainable form of material to fabricate composite. But natural fibers are generally weaker than synthetic fibers due to the porosity of the fibers making them grow weaker mechanically and physically as time passes. To improve the quality of kenaf reinforced composite, silica nanoparticles was introduced as a filler material. Silica nanoparticle is a material with high surface area contributing to its high interfacial interaction with the matrix resulting in the improvement of the matrix. In this work, the composites were fabricated via vacuum infusion process by creating a system in which the compressed randomly orientated kenaf mat are laid in. The silica nanoparticles are dispersed into the epoxy using a homogenizer at 3000 rpm for 10 minutes before being infused into the fibers. The results shows that generally the inclusion of hydrophobic silica nanoparticles had a detrimental effect on the mechanical properties. However, composites with 2 vol% silica had the best mechanical properties of specimens with silica nanoparticles included at 43.8 MPa and 3.05 GPa for flexural strength and flexural modulus, and 40.0 MPa and 1.15 GPa for compressive strength and compressive modulus, respectively.

This study examined English classroom environments with active learning methods in Japanese high schools. Students learned English using a paper-based quiz during group discussions. We administered a questionnaire to the students, and the results indicated that 45% of the students would like to use information and communication technology (ICT) tools such as computers and tablets to study English in a classroom. Therefore, we propose active learning methods with ICT tools to enhance creativity, problem solving ability, and knowledge during student activities in group discussions using Google Applications.

Camera-based response analysers are classroom enhancement tools like clicker tools that teachers can use to collect students’ answers. A camera-based response analyser can reduce the cost of such student devices because it recognises AR marker sheets to collect students’ responses. However, conventional camera-based response analysers are sensitive to occlusion. In addition, holding markers while capturing is troublesome. To mitigate these issues, we have developed a response analyser system that employs recognition of random dot (RD) and stationary markers. We have improved the performance of the system to recognise the RD markers using a typical background colour. We confirmed the basic performance of the modified response analyser system and the proposed stationary markers experimentally.

Pitching is one of the most important elements of baseball. Therefore, both professional and amateur players are interested in measuring their pitching performance, particularly their pitch speed. Conventional equipment such as radar speed guns can be used to measure pitch speed; however this approach is unpopular among amateur players because of its cost. Therefore, we proposed a vision-based speed-measuring method for baseball pitches and developed a smartphone application called iPhoneSG, which can measure the speed of pitched baseballs on a real baseball diamond in near-real-time using a standalone image-processing technique on the smartphone. Relative to conventional radar speed guns, which must be placed on the extended line of the ball trajectory, iPhoneSG widens the possible area of data acquisition. Considering the popularity of smartphones, iPhoneSG provides players with a convenient means of measuring pitch speeds. We confirmed the basic viability of the proposed method as implemented in our iPhoneSG application.
