We propose a method for regulating wireless access points (APs) that is based on mechanisms of biological development and evolution. The purpose of the proposed regulation is to simultaneously achieve power savings in the APs and achieve reliable connection services through the APs better, which is shown to be a trade-off relationship in this study. The regulation target is the cycle time at which each AP enters the power-off state, which is referred to as the sleep cycle time. Biological development mechanisms form bodies of a variety of shapes using different genomes as design information, and these genomes are modified evolutionarily. Similarly, in the present study, a method inspired by biological development forms a variety of the sleep cycle times of APs, and an evolutionary method modifies the parameter values of the method inspired by the biological development in order to obtain better configurations of the APs. In addition, the regulation method is able to configure APs in a distributed manner without knowing global information; the total number of APs, their locations, or their identifiers, which is actually suitable for the situation assumed in the present study, in which APs are established and removed freely by their owners and AP users freely appear. Simulation results show that the proposed method is capable of exploring the tradeoff relationship between the amount of consumed power of the APs and the reliability of connection services in terms of momentary achievement by regulating APs, but yields highly varying regulation results along time.

In recent years, route bus service systems have been collecting and accumulating bus probe data such as GPS positions and traffic speeds from all route buses, day after day. In the present paper, we propose a method to analyze the conditions of a road traffic network from a huge amount of the route bus probe data. First, we show a conversion method from the probe data to a road segment data set. Second, we introduce analysis methods that compute the degree of congestion and reachable areas from the road segment data set. Finally, we discuss road segment data structures for rapid calculations of these analytical methods.

One often encounters numerical difficulties in solving linear matrix inequality (LMI) problems obtained from H ∞ control problems. We discuss the reason from the viewpoint of optimization. It is empirically known that a numerical difficulty occurs if the resulting LMI problem or its dual is not strongly feasible. In this paper, we provide necessary and sufficient conditions for LMI problem and its dual not to be strongly feasible, and interpret them in terms of control system. For this, facial reduction, which was proposed by Borwein and Wolkowicz, plays an important role. We show that a necessary and sufficient condition closely related to the existence of invariant zeros in the closed left-half plane in the system, and present a way to remove the numerical difficulty with the null vectors associated with invariant zeros in the closed left-half plane. Numerical results show that the numerical stability is improved by applying it.

Measurements are made of differential cross-sections of highly boosted pair-produced top quarks as a function of top-quark and tt¯ system kinematic observables using proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of s=13 TeV. The data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb−1, recorded in 2015 and 2016 with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. Events with two large-radius jets in the final state, one with transverse momentum pT>500 GeV and a second with pT>350 GeV, are used for the measurement. The top-quark candidates are separated from the multijet background using jet substructure information and association with a b-tagged jet. The measured spectra are corrected for detector effects to a particle-level fiducial phase space and a parton-level limited phase space, and are compared to several Monte Carlo simulations by means of calculated χ2 values. The cross-section for tt¯ production in the fiducial phase-space region is 292±7(stat)±71(syst) fb, to be compared to the theoretical prediction of 384±36 fb.

A Web-based Application for Writing Novels

In this paper, we propose a method for assisting amateur writers in novel writing. Amateur writers can publish their work intensively through web infrastructures. This situation is beneficial, because it encourages amateur writers to enhance their skills by sharing their work. However, writing a good novel is difficult for a novice, because the novel-writing task requires the management of many character settings and maintenance of consistency throughout the novel. The length of a novel increases the difficulty of the task and decreases motivation owing to cumbersome management tasks. To reduce the burden, we introduce automatic keyword suggestion and highlighting techniques. Automatic keyword suggestion finds names of characters from the draft text and proposes their addition to the character list. The character names in the list are automatically linked to the corresponding words in the draft text. Using such functions, amateur writers can easily check the consistency of their novels while writing, similar to the use of an integrated development environment for software development. We have implemented a web application that provides the functions, and we consider the effectiveness of the proposed method here.

In observing the widely spread of patients caused by infectious diseases or the increase of the number of failures of equipments, it is crucial to predict the final number of infected patients or failures at earlier stages. To estimate the number of infected patients, the SIR model, the ordinary differential equation model, statistical truncated model are useful. The predicted value for the final number of patients using data until time T becomes a function (trend) of T. This is called L-plot. We here consider the use of the L-plot to predict the final number of patients, and we defined the decay function using the L-plot. Applying the multiple methodologies to the same data, we could expect the better predicted values. This is called the PoP, the prediction on predictions. As one of the PoP method, we propose to use the ensemble method. By applying these methods to the SARS case, we have found that the ensemble method works well as a PoP method.

We search for the optimum life test plans of electrical insulation for thermal stress assuming that the Arrhenius law holds between the thermal stress and the lifetime, and that the logarithmic lifetime follows some consistent probability distributions at a constant stress. The optimization target is to find the optimum number of test specimens at each test stress level, and we consider the case of the number of stress level is three. The criterion for optimality is measured by the root mean squared error for the lifetime in use condition. To take into account the reality, we used the parameter values in a real experimental case. Comparing the optimum results with those using the conventional test method where test specimens are equally allocated to each test stress level, we have found that the confidence interval for the predicted value in the optimum case becomes around 80-85% of that in the conventional test. However, there is only a small difference between the optimum test result and the conventional test result if linearity of the Arrhenius plot is required. It would be useful to know the semi-optimum test plan in which the efficiency is close to that in the optimum one and the test condition is simple. In that sense, we have found that we may regard the conventional test plan as one of the semi-optimum test plans.

We analyze effect of review and patch development experience to patch review process in OSS. We use log data from version control system (git and Subversion) and code review system (Rietveld) for the analysis. As a result, both of review and patch development experience showed strong negative correlation with times of review. Further, we added bug (issue) tracking system log data and analyzed with above data as additional analysis. The analysis showed that the experiences did not show correlation with finding bugs in review process. © 2015 Japan Society for Software science and technology.

In order to improve the development efficiency of embedded software, we have developed a programming language called mruby. We apply the object-oriented programming language Ruby to embedded system development. As compared to the interpreter of Ruby, mruby programs are executed by the compiler and VM. The memory footprint of mruby VM is sufficiently small, Ruby program is able to be executed on a limited resource device. In this paper, we show the benefits of using mruby in embedded software development. We also showcase the features and the development environment of mruby, and implementation results of simple application.
