The condensation energy of Bi‐2212 superconductor in various doped states was evaluated from the flux pinning strength of columnar defects. For the purpose the collective flux creep theory was used to estimate the virtual critical current density in creep‐free state and the summation theory was used to estimate the elementary pinning force of the columnar defects. The values of obtained thermodynamic critical field are in the range of other observations and this proves a validity of the present evaluation. The obtained condensation energy strongly depends on the anisotropy determined by the superconductivity in the block layer. It is found that the condensation energy is drastically enhanced with decreasing temperature below the critical point.

This paper proposes an intelligent diagnosis method for plant machinery in multi-fault state using wavelet analysis, genetic programming (GP), and possibility theory. The wavelet analysis is used to extract feature spectra of multi-fault state from measured vibration signal for the diagnosis. Excellent symptom parameters for distinguishing fault states are automatically generated by GP. Because the value of symptom parameter calculated to express the feature of the vibration signal fluctuates even if machine state does not change, fuzzy diagnosis is necessary. After obtaining the excellent symptom parameters by GP called GP-SPs, the membership functions of GP-SPs are needed for fuzzy diagnosis. We also discuss the identification method of membership function of symptom parameters using probability theory and possibility theory, and show the inference method for identifying faults types. The methods proposed in this paper are verified by applying them to the diagnosis of rolling bearing in multi-fault state.

This paper is concerned with an application study of model-based fault detection method to a ship propulsion system. When modeling the object system, Quasi-ARMAX model with multi-model form is used. In this model, the system non-linearity is incorporated into model parameters by using non-linear non-parametric models (NNMs). Kullback discrimination Information (KDI) is introduced as fault detection index to evaluate the distortion in identified model, which is caused by a fault. The effectiveness of the method is verified through simulation studies on the ship propulsion system.

Electroencephalograph (EEG) recordings during right and left motor imagery can be used to move a cursor to a target on a computer screen. Such an EEG-based brain-computer interface (BCI) can provide a new communication channel to replace an impaired motor function. It can be used by e.g., handicap users with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). In this study, statistical pattern recognition method based on AR model was introduced to discriminate the EEG signals recorded during right and left motor imagery. And learning methods (processing period for parameter estimation, AR order, etc.) were investigated. Finally, the effectiveness of our method was confirmed through the experimental studies.

In our original wire communication system that consists of low-power dc-dc converters, a converter in the powering terminal operates as not only power supply but also transmitter. Signal is transmitted by the use of output-voltage ripple. At transmission of message, the ripple is intentionally increased and modulated by the signal. Steady state and transient characteristics on FM (frequency modulation) by the way of varying the switching frequency are investigated. FSK (frequency-shift keying) is presented as an example of digital FM transmission and reception. In addition, we introduce a new electronic choke used in each terminal.

This paper introduces an integrated methodology to remotely monitor and diagnose distant machines by a robot hand. Using a virtual reality environment and a teleoperation system, the vibration data are collected from different checking points. In order to pinpoint the faults, the collected data are analyzed and then using a fuzzy system the parameters of the system are estimated. Several examples of failure diagnosis verify the system efficiency.

With the cancellation of SA in 2000, the precision of GPS has been improved, widening the field of GPS applications. This range of applications includes the measurement of the position of mobile robots. Because the precision of point positioning by GPS is approximately 22mCEP, positioning such objects as automatically controlled oil tankers can be done with good results. However in the case of mobile robots the size of a human, point positioning does not provide enough precision. But with a differential system, utilization involves obtaining information through radio networks, and international agreements written into law determine the radio frequencies that are permitted for use by citizens. For that reason the selection of radio equipment is a very difficult problem for DGPS. In Japan one radio system attracting attention recently is the wireless LAN system, using IEEE802.11b. It is on the 2.4 GHz band, which is available without license, and functions on TCP/IP protocol. This report describes the experimental results of position measurement for a mobile robot using a wireless LAN to send data from a reference station to the robot. We examined what radio transmissions could be used effectively by the LAN.
