Evaluating BERT-based language models for detecting misinformation

Online misinformation poses a significant challenge due to its rapid spread and limited supervision. To address this issue, automated rumour detection techniques are essential for countering the negative impact of false information. Previous research primarily focussed on extracting text features, which proved time-consuming and less effective. In this study, we contribute substantially to two domains: rumour detection on Twitter and the evaluation of text embeddings. We thoroughly analyse rumour detection models and compare the quality of text embeddings generated by various fine-tuned BERT-based models. Our findings indicate that our proposed models outperform existing techniques. Notably, when we test these models on combined datasets, we observe significant performance improvements with larger training and testing data sizes. We conclude that carefully considering the dataset, data splitting, and classification techniques is crucial for evaluating solution performance. Additionally, we find that differences in the quality of text embeddings between RoBERTa, BERT, and DistilBERT are insignificant. This challenges existing assumptions and highlights the need for future research to explore these nuances further. © The Author(s) 2025.

The increasing adoption of Docker containers in modern software development requires effective monitoring and optimization to ensure high performance and efficient resource utilization. This paper provides an overview of the various tools and technologies that leverage artificial intelligence (AI) to automate the monitoring and optimization of Docker containers. The authors explore the capabilities of AI-driven tools such as machine learning-based anomaly detection, predictive analytics, and automated resource management. By examining these tools, the authors highlight their benefits in enhancing container performance, scalability, and availability. Through comparative analysis, the strengths and limitations of each tool and their impact on container management are discussed. The findings underscore the potential of AI to revolutionize container monitoring and optimization, leading to more efficient and robust IT infrastructure. © 2025 IEEE.

The monitoring of complex industrial systems through the implementation of smart approaches provides unique opportunities, such as the characterisation of their real-time performance. Within this scope, there exists the need to support decision-making during maintenance processes, due to the presence of a multitude of faults in real-world systems and the difficulty of identifying the appropriate mitigating solutions. The proposed solution uses intelligent optimisation techniques to identify the ideal control solution within these complex systems when faults arise. This paper presents a framework based on an intelligent optimisation approach, which provides a workflow process for the support of decision-making during faulty situations. It is adapted and implemented to the demand-side of a Compressed Air System (CAS), thus providing a holistic approach in automating fault mitigation during real-time system operation. In implementing this framework, multiple intelligent optimisation techniques such as the Genetic Algorithm and the Particle Swarm Optimisation algorithms were adopted and implemented. Both algorithms were successful in providing the ideal control solution under fault conditions. For a typical production case study, the proposed optimisation approach results in a reduction of 40% in its air consumption, which directly improves its environmental performance and energy costs. This result demonstrates that this approach contributes a suitable control strategy for CAS when experiencing a pneumatic fault, which has a direct positive effect on the operational energy performance and costs. © 2024 The Author(s).

The development of digital technologies, such as Cyber Physical systems (CPS) and Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), under the umbrella of Industry 4.0, has increased rapidly within the manufacturing industry. Monitoring system behaviour in real time is becoming prevalent with manufacturing stakeholders to minimise downtime, maintain or improve equipment efficiency, and enhance production output. This paper proposes a generic IIoT framework for the online real time monitoring of system parameters. Such an approach has been implemented on the demand-side of a pneumatic setup, and a visualisation technique was developed for evaluation purposes. The developed framework paves the way towards further data analytics with the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) techniques. © 2024 Elsevier B.V.. All rights reserved.

Management and information systems are considered two major disciplines that have to be combined to benefit from knowledge for rational decision-making which means strict procedures utilizing objective knowledge and logic for many years. Effective and efficient use of already invested organizational resources is a key subject to gain a competitive advantage by making decisions with the help of AI techniques which benefit from both internal and external knowledge. This paper introduces a new model to get benefits from open-source intelligence (OSINT) in the context of external knowledge with a green computing approach for solving global organizational challenges in the scope of Society 5.0. This research has a dual background, theoretical and practical. Problem defining and hypothesis formulation was carried out by literature review. Then, the application developed according to the proposed model was put into action in some organizations for testing, and feedback from experts who participated in the proof of concept (POC) activities was evaluated and discussed empirically. Finally, the findings of our research, the advantages of our model, and both academic and business future work were summarized. It has been practically determined that the model and application we have developed are largely successful in line with our hypotheses. However, the weaknesses and advantages of our study were also revealed. Our research is the first study that combines Management information systems and Open-Source Intelligence disciplines with the approach of Society 5.0 to support SMEs in analyzing open-source information to build better decision-making mechanisms. The developed application in this study can also be applied to solving other green distributed computing needs in different domains. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

Ovarian cancer is a global health concern due to the unavailability of an effective screening strategy and is often diagnosed at a late stage with approximately 70% of the case which reduces the survival chances of patients. Initial diagnosis is challenging due to inconspicuous symptoms in its initial stages which complicate its timely diagnosis. Regular screenings, such as pelvic exams, ultrasounds, and blood tests targeting specific biomarkers can be helpful for early diagnosis. In addition, the use of machine learning models can help automate this process thereby assisting medical experts for accurate diagnosis. This study aims at timely and accurate detection of ovarian cancer using a transfer learning approach that uses the MobileNet model. Moreover, the Chi-square technique is used to extract the most impactful features for better accuracy. For experiments, the Soochow University ovarian cancer dataset is employed. Extensive experiments are performed using all features from the dataset, as well as, using Chi-square-based selective features. The best accuracy of 90.88% is achieved with the Xception model when all features are used. Experimental results show a substantial increase when selective features are used indicating a 98.49% accuracy using the MobileNet model with 20 most important features. In addition, precision, recall, and F1 scores of 99.13%, 99.27%, and 99.20% are obtained showing the model’s robustness and generalization. This study also employs Shapley additive explanations to explain the importance of various features toward the model’s output thereby providing transparency for the model’s decision-making process. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

This article is devoted to the determination of the fractal size of the damaged part of the human brain on the basis of images obtained from MRI (magnetic resonance imaging). There are various mathematical methods for determining the size of fractal structures, this article uses two variants of the cell counting method and describes the analysis of errors in determining the fractal size of the damaged part of the human brain. The article shows that the damaged part of the human brain has a fractal structure and that it has a fractal dimension. Fractal measurement has also been used to determine the size of the damaged part of the human brain, unlike common methods. In determining the fractal scale, cases of changes in human body organs were not taken into account. In the article, the determination of the size of the damaged part of the human brain is studied on the basis of mathematical formulas. Two different variants of the special cell counting method were used to calculate the fractal measurements, as well as the corresponding number of experimental results. In addition, these measurements were used to assess the extent to which patients suffered brain damage and to provide information on the practical application of these fractal measurements. © 2024 ACM.
