Estimating intrinsic geometric properties of a surface from a polygonal mesh obtained from range data is an important stage of numerous algorithms in computer and robot vision, computergraphics, geometric modeling, industrial and biomedical engineering. This work considers different computational schemes for local estimation of intrinsic curvature geometric properties. Five different algorithms and their modifications were tested on triangular meshes that represent tessellations of synthetic geometric models. The results were compared with the analytically computed values of the Gaussian and mean curvatures of the non-uniform rational B-spline (NURBs) surfaces, these meshes originated from. This work manifests the best algorithms suited for that indeed different algorithms should be employed to compute the Gaussian and mean curvatures.

This work considers the problem of metamorphosis interpolation between two freeform planar curves. Given two planar parametric curves, the curvature signature of the two curves is linearly blended, yielding a gradual change that is not only smooth but also employs intrinsic curvature shape properties, and hence is highly appealing. In order to be able to employ this curvature blending, we present a constructive scheme to derive curvature signatures of parameter curves. Additionally, we propose a scheme to reconstruct a curve from its curvature signature.

We present a method to code the multiresolution structure of a 3D triangle mesh in a manner that allows progressive decoding and efficient rendering at a client machine. The code is based on a special ordering of the mesh vertices which has good locality and continuity properties, inducing a natural multiresolution structure. This ordering also incorporates information allowing efficient rendering of the mesh at all resolutions using the contemporary vertex buffer mechanism. The performance of our code is shown to be competitive with existing progressive mesh compression methods, while achieving superior rendering speed.

Methods for mobile robot localization that use eigenspaces of panoramic snapshots of the environment are in general sensitive to changes in the illumination of the environment. Therefore, we propose an approach which achieves a reliable localization under severe illumination conditions. The method uses gradient filtering of the eigenspace. After testing the approach on images obtained by a mobile robot, we show that it outperforms the standard eigenspace-based recognition method.

Many important characteristics of simulation models, including queuing models, can be investigated by the use of metamodels. Problems in qualitative analysis such as analyzing model dynamics and coming to a careful understanding of model behavior can be dealt with this way. Metamodels can provide precise results even for quantitative analysis tasks, such as those involving the movement of dynamic model elements. This paper describes the use of a type of metamodeling to support the assessment of simulation models based on the analysis of trace files produced at the time of model execution. Because of the simple structure of these trace files, a simulation model can create them easily. The analysis and interpretation of trace files that is described here is independent of the simulation language used to create the original model. The tools presented in this article can be used for these purposes: to construct generic model structures at the metamodel level and then animate aspects of model behavior in terms of these structures; to build a graphic display indicating which dynamic model elements moved at which times between which points in the model, and in which real-time order in cases of time ties; to determine when (and if) user-specified model conditions come about; and to develop statistical information that might not have been planned for in the design of the original model. Future plans call for making these tools available in a World Wide Web environment to support assessment of simulation models.
