Applying differential privacy (DP) by means of the DP-SGD algorithm to protect individual data points during training is becoming increasingly popular in NLP. However, the choice of granularity at which DP is applied is often neglected. For example, neural machine translation (NMT) typically operates on the sentence-level granularity. From the perspective of DP, this setup assumes that each sentence belongs to a single person and any two sentences in the training dataset are independent. This assumption is however violated in many real-world NMT datasets, e.g., those including dialogues. For proper application of DP we thus must shift from sentences to entire documents. In this paper, we investigate NMT at both the sentence and document levels, analyzing the privacy/utility trade-off for both scenarios, and evaluating the risks of not using the appropriate privacy granularity in terms of leaking personally identifiable information (PII). Our findings indicate that the document-level NMT system is more resistant to membership inference attacks, emphasizing the significance of using the appropriate granularity when working with DP.1 © 2024, CC BY-SA.

The Internet of Drones (IoD) extends the capabilities of unmanned aerial vehicles, enabling them to participate in a connected network. In IoD infrastructure, drones communicate not only among themselves but also with users and a control center. This interconnected communication framework holds promise for various applications, from collaborative decision-making to real-time data exchange. However, the expansion of communication in IoD also introduces new challenges, particularly in terms of security, privacy and authentication. Unfortunately, the current authentication protocols are inadequate in offering robust security features against various attacks in the IoD environment. To address these security issues and limitations, we proposed a secure protocol for the IoD environment using chaotic maps and hash functions. In addition, we also employed a physically unclonable function in the development of the proposed protocol. We assess the security of the protocol through both informal and formal security analysis. The formal security analysis is conducted through a widely used random or real (RoR) model. The informal analysis shows the rigorous security features against various attacks, such as masquerading, anonymity violation, and physical cloning attacks. Moreover, we compare the performance of the devised protocol with similar existing protocols across important performance parameters, such as communication overhead, computation overhead, and security features. The devised protocol provides a 67.86% and 17.80% reduction in computation and communication overheads, respectively, as compared to related protocols. The analysis demonstrates the proposed protocol's capacity to support secure communication in the IoD environment and satisfy desirable security attributes. © 2014 IEEE.

With the increasing demand for global R&D collaboration to utilize knowledge resources around the world, a competency development framework (CDF) for managers who facilitate research collaboration between R&D teams in different countries is necessary for the managers to perform their jobs effectively and to improve the efficiency of utilizing global knowledge resources. This paper proposes a CDF for R&D bridge managers (BMs) who bridge R&D organizations in different countries. A CDF assists with designing professional development programs. The proposed framework is based on relevant literature and empirical studies. It defines competencies that would most likely help BMs enhance research collaboration in global R&D projects. This is similar to how the project manager competency development framework impacts the performance of a project manager. A workshop method is proposed as a competency development method for BMs. This paper presents the first R&D bridge manager competency development framework (BMCDF) for BMs who facilitate research collaboration in global R&D projects. The managers can use the BMCDF for their professional development, especially in the context of global R&D projects. organizations may use this framework as a guide for developing competency-based training programs for their R&D personnel. © 2022 IEEE.

Message passing neural networks iteratively generate node embeddings by aggregating information from neighboring nodes. With increasing depth, information from more distant nodes is included. However, node embeddings may be unable to represent the growing node neighborhoods accurately and the influence of distant nodes may vanish, a problem referred to as oversquashing. Information redundancy in message passing, i.e., the repetitive exchange and encoding of identical information amplifies oversquashing. We develop a novel aggregation scheme based on neighborhood trees, which allows for controlling redundancy by pruning redundant branches of unfolding trees underlying standard message passing. While the regular structure of unfolding trees allows the reuse of intermediate results in a straightforward way, the use of neighborhood trees poses computational challenges. We propose compact representations of neighborhood trees and merge them, exploiting computational redundancy by identifying isomorphic subtrees. From this, node and graph embeddings are computed via a neural architecture inspired by tree canonization techniques. Our method is less susceptible to oversquashing than traditional message passing neural networks and can improve the accuracy on widely used benchmark datasets. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. Accurate solutions are needed for a variety of computer vision applications, including medical imaging, object detection, and recognition. Such complicated challenges are beyond the capabilities of artificial intelligence and machine learning, which mainly rely on data and algorithms to learn. The path to Deep Learning (DL) is thus paved. Even though deep learning is incredibly effective at solving complex problems, it is invariant, meaning that it ignores the spatial relationship between the features and instead searches for features only. This can cause the model’s performance to suffer. Additionally, because the model is invariant, gathering a large volume of training data is a difficult undertaking. To address this, the Capsule network (CapsNet), whose performance outperforms Deep Learning techniques, was introduced. Despite its success, applications of CapsNet and working remain a mystery. Thus, the performance of CapsNet across many applications and obstacles is examined in this study together with the predecessors of CapsNet. Additionally, this paper explores the use of Capsule networks with an attention mechanism (CapsNet-ATM) for predicting potato leaf diseases. The performance of CapsNet-ATM in this crucial agricultural application is thoroughly assessed and contrasted with the well-known models VGG-16 and VGG-19, providing insight into the system’s efficacy and promise as a reliable tool for the detection and prediction of potato leaf disease. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

This paper introduces an advanced movie recommendation system that combines neural collaborative filtering (NCF) with sentiment analysis to improve personalization, accuracy, and robustness in recommending movies. By integrating user preferences with the sentiment polarity of reviews, the system refines recommendations, effectively addressing challenges such as the cold start problem, data sparsity, and limited semantic understanding. Unlike traditional collaborative and content-based filtering methods, which often struggle with diversity and accuracy, our approach utilizes deep learning within NCF to reveal hidden patterns in user behavior, enhancing recommendations’ relevance and precision. The proposed system is evaluated using standard performance metrics, including RMSE, MSE, and MAE, demonstrating its superior performance over conventional filtering techniques. Its enhanced scalability and adaptability position it as a promising tool for personalized content delivery in digital entertainment, with considerable potential for large-scale, dynamic recommendation environments. This research contributes to the existing knowledge on recommendation systems and offers new insights into improving content personalization and user satisfaction. data augmentation effectively expands feature distribution in time series classification, enhancing downstream task performance. However, existing techniques often fail to maintain semantic consistency between augmented and original time series data, causing label noise and thereby degrading downstream task performance. We argue that data augmentation should preserve time series semantic consistency and expand the non-semantic information space. In this paper, we reformulate data augmentation as a semantic path planning problem between original data and augmented data, modeled as a Markov Decision Process (MDP). We propose a reinforcement learning-based algorithm (RL) named FreqSYN, where the action space is defined by a set of learnable Gaussian kernels that perturbs the frequency domain of the original data to generate augmented samples. The confidence coefficients of augmented data in semantically relevant classification tasks are used as a reward to iteratively refine the FreqSYN. Our method is validated across four datasets, achieving state-of-the-art performance, with a 2% improvement in F1 score over the SimPSI method. Estimating brain age based on structural Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is one of the most challenging and prominent areas of research in recent medical imaging and neuroscience studies. The significance of brain age prediction in the early diagnosis of neurological disorders has fueled a resurgence of interest in this field. Various studies have addressed this issue using a spectrum of techniques, from traditional machine learning to deep neural networks. The majority of these techniques employ centralized paradigms, which do not adequately preserve privacy. To tackle this problem, a handful of studies have utilized a federated approach. In this study, we propose a novel hierarchical clustered federated learning approach that carefully captures and considers the similarities of the clients' predictions on a certain benchmark dataset. This method enhances performance in Non-Independent and Identically Distributed (Non-IID) environments while preserving privacy. We use a multi-site dataset that provides a broad variety of MRI scans, characterizing a proper Non-IID environment. Our method achieves a Mean Absolute Error (MAE) of 3.86, while the non-clustered FedAvg federated approach attains a 4.14 MAE on the test set.11Code is available at https://***/Abtinmy/Clustered-FL-BrainAGE. © 2023 IEEE.

SYMPLECTIC QTT-FEM SOLUTION OF THE ONE-DIMENSIONAL ACOUSTIC WAVE EQUATION IN THE TIME DOMAIN

Structured Finite Element Methods (FEMs) based on low-rank approximation in the form of the so-called Quantized Tensor Train (QTT) decomposition (QTT-FEM) have been proposed and extensively studied in the case of elliptic equations. In this work, we design a QTT-FE method for time-domain acoustic wave equations, combining stable low-rank approximation in space with a suitable conservative discretization in time. For the acoustic wave equation with a homogeneous source term in a single space dimension as a model problem, we consider its reformulation as a first-order system in time. In space, we employ a low-rank QTT-FEM discretization based on continuous piecewise linear finite elements corresponding to uniformly refined nested meshes. Time integration is performed using symplectic high-order Gauss–Legendre Runge–Kutta methods.
