The increasing population and water demand in North Africa, particularly in semi-arid and arid regions like Morocco, necessitate efficient water resource management. Morocco experiences significant water scarcity due to persistent droughts and rising agricultural water demand. Accurate estimation of crop water requirements, particularly crop evapotranspiration, influenced by climatic and crop-specific conditions, is vital for improving water use efficiency. This study focuses on wheat, a staple crop in Morocco's Draa-tafilalet region, encompassing Ouarzazate, Zagora, and Tinghir. Traditional methods for estimating the crop coefficient require comprehensive climatic datasets, often unavailable. Therefore, this study aims to develop and validate artificial neural network models to predict monthly Kc values for wheat using limited climatic data. The results showed that the optimal model for predicting crop coefficients used a minimum and maximum temperatures, along with solar radiation, applying different configurations of hidden neuron layers for each region: (7, 5) for Ouarzazate, (8, 6) for Zagora, and (9, 6) for Tinghir. The best model's accuracy was close to 1, showing a statistically significant accordance between observed and predicted values. This study highlights the model's high accuracy and recommends its use for predicting crop coefficients values with limited climatic factors. It also supports water users in developing and updating Kc databases for each region based on climatic conditions. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

MSC Codes 60J22 (Primary), 65K10, 60J20, 65C40 (Secondary)Deep learning (DL) approximation algorithms – typically consisting of a class of deep artificial neural networks (DNNs) trained by a stochastic gradient descent (SGD) optimization method – are nowadays the key ingredients in many artificial intelligence (AI) systems and have revolutionized our ways of working and living in modern societies. For example, SGD methods are used to train powerful large language models (LLMs) such as versions of ChatGPT and Gemini, SGD methods are employed to create successful generative AI based text-to-image creation models such as Midjourney, DALL-E, and Stable Diffusion, but SGD methods are also used to train DNNs to approximately solve scientific models such as partial differential equation (PDE) models from physics and biology and optimal control and stopping problems from engineering. It is known that the plain vanilla standard SGD method fails to converge even in the situation of several convex optimization problems if the learning rates are bounded away from zero. However, in many practical relevant training scenarios, often not the plain vanilla standard SGD method but instead adaptive SGD methods such as the RMSprop and the Adam optimizers, in which the learning rates are modified adaptively during the training process, are employed. This naturally rises the question whether such adaptive optimizers, in which the learning rates are modified adaptively during the training process, do converge in the situation of non-vanishing learning rates. In this work we answer this question negatively by proving that adaptive SGD methods such as the popular Adam optimizer fail to converge to any possible random limit point if the learning rates are asymptotically bounded away from zero. In our proof of this non-convergence result we establish suitable pathwise a priori bounds for a class of accelerated and adaptive SGD methods, which are also of independent interest. An accurate predictive model of temperature and humidity plays a vital role in many industrial processes that utilize a closed space such as in agriculture and building management. With the exceptional performance of deep learning on time-series data, developing a predictive temperature and humidity model with deep learning is propitious. In this study, we demonstrated that deep learning models with multivariate time-series data produce remarkable performance for temperature and relative humidity prediction in a closed space. In detail, all deep learning models that we developed in this study achieve almost perfect performance with an R value over 0.99. © 2023 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.

In the era of big data, data trading significantly enhances data-driven technologies by facilitating data sharing. Despite the clear advantages often experienced by data users when incorporating multiple sources, the topic of multi-source data trading remains largely unexplored. This paper designs a novel data trading framework, which enables multi-source data trading through multi-source cooperation. The proposed framework aims to improve data usage efficiency and increase seller revenue. In particular, we model data sellers' cooperative decisions through the Nash bargaining framework and systematically outline the interactions between sellers and buyers as a two-stage Stackelberg game. A key contribution of this work is the consideration of coupling among diverse data products, which is essential but often overlooked in prior studies. We properly classify data's utility into endogenous and relational categories to disentangle the coupling. Despite the inherent non-convex nature of the optimization problem, we methodically derive the closed-form optimal solutions by decomposing the problem into several subproblems. Interestingly, we reveal that, under our proposed framework, sellers' revenue initially remains steady with the increase of product coupling level, but begins to rise once the level exceeds a certain threshold due to the substitute effect. Finally, experimental results show that our proposed framework can improve the seller's profit by up to 46.32% compared to traditional data trading methods in the current data market. © 2024 IEEE.

Smart grids are faced with a range of challenges, such as the development of communication infrastructure, cybersecurity threats, data privacy, and the protection of user information, due to their complex structure. Another key challenge faced by smart grids is the stability issues arising from variable energy sources and consumption patterns. In these complex grid systems where energy demand and supply need to be balanced instantly, stability predictions play a significant role in foreseeing potential disruptions and optimizing energy flow. Therefore, within the scope of this study, a hybrid structure utilizing Recurrent Neural networks (RNN) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks is employed for stability classification to predict grid stability. This hybrid model combines the ability of RNN to recognize relationships between consecutive data points with LSTM's capability to preserve long-term dependencies. The results obtained indicate that the model exhibited stable performance with accuracy rates of 98.06% and 98.02% at 50 and 100 epochs, respectively. The findings of this study contribute valuable insights to research on the management and stability of smart grids, enabling energy systems to be operated more reliably and efficiently. © 2024 IEEE.

The industry is rapidly transitioning from the 4.0 era to the 5.0 era, prompting renewed interest among scholars in scheduling problems. They allow operations to process and assemble various components simultaneously. This bibliometric analysis provides a comprehensive understanding of the diverse research perspectives on the potential challenges of integrated scheduling within the framework. We identified 357 Scopus articles and analysed co-occurrence keyword (CNK) by VOSViewer tools and Global Citation Score (GCS) by Scopus tools. The research data obtained from 1993 to 2023 mainly in the subject areas of Engineering, computer science, Maths, and others. CNK identified six cluster keywords, and nine most cited articles based on normalised GCS. These results contribute to our understanding of the development of scheduling algorithms, shifting from an emphasis on manufacturing transfers to contemporary demand-centric research directions. Furthermore, this research provides a valuable perspective for policymakers, plant personnel, and manufacturing managers to make informed decisions.

Multimodal dialogue emotion recognition integrates data from multiple modalities to accurately identify emotional states in conversations. However, differences in expression and information density across modalities complicate the fusion of features. Traditional methods may introduce redundant information from other utterances, reducing the accuracy of emotion recognition. Existing one-hot labels often fail to capture the full range of emotional expressions, leading to biased results. To address these issues, we propose a model that fuses different modalities within the same utterance to avoid redundancy. It employs a progressive classification process, refining emotion recognition from coarse to fine granularity. Additionally, we use emotion polarity probabilities as weights for fine-grained classification and introduce a multimodal information-rich label that considers both the data and their interactions. Experiments on IEMOCAP and MELD datasets demonstrate the model’s effectiveness, significantly improving dialog emotion recognition accuracy. Our code is available at https://***/r/LOCG-188E.

Usually, elderly patients in hospitals suffer from malnutrition because they are unable to consume food as prescribed by doctors or nutritionists. Analyzing food intake is labor-intensive and time-consuming. Therefore, machine learning is used to analyze the food intake. Major food analysis tasks include food classification and food weight estimation. The basic machine learning approach to this problem is to combine a food classification model with a food weight estimate model sequentially. When we deployed it, we found that a large amount of memory and models were required. One solution is to use multi-task learning. In this study, we proposed multi-task learning frameworks that could recognize food and predict weight based on a single image. The performance of our frameworks was compared to the baseline models, which only utilized either regression or classification. Although baseline accuracy is higher, our framework has MAPE values that are lower than the baseline. To improve the performance, we explored different approaches for weighting loss, including manual weighting and auto weighting, using uncertainty and auxiliary tasks. From the experiment, our results showed that our multi-task learning framework that adjusted the weight of loss using auxiliary tasks outperformed the baseline models in terms of MAPE and Accuracy. Moreover, we demonstrate our framework when scaling up the backbone from ResNet50 to ResNet101 and ResNet152.

Understanding the mechanistic interpretability of mutation effects in a protein can help predict the clinical implications of the genetic variants. Hence, computational variant effect predictions that involve protein structural features of the protein mutations might be suitable in this case. In this work, we focus on BRCT domains of BRCA1 gene that is widely studied in breast cancer studies. We retrieved 88 selected missense variants found in BRCT domains annotated in both ClinVar and gnomAD databases. To computationally characterize the pathogenic property of the mutations we used two types of features extracted from protein structures: a change in free Gibbs energy and a set of features derived from molecular dynamics simulations of each mutant. Using a dimensional reduction and Gaussian mixture model (GMM)-based clustering we demonstrate that the variants are segregated into two regions that may correspond to their pathogenic status. This method can be a potential computational pipeline for providing the preliminary mechanistic interpretation of mutation effects in terms of their thermodynamic and structural features.
