Skin cancer, which stands as the most prevalent form of human malignancy, is primarily identified through visual examination. The procedure for identifying skin lesions typically starts with an initial clinical assessment, which might be followed by dermoscopic analysis, a biopsy, and a subsequent histopathological checkup. Image-based Skin lesion classification presents a significant challenge due to the subtle and intricate variations in their appearance. Deep Convolutional Neural Network (DCNN) show promising results in managing diverse and intricate tasks involving a wide array of finely detailed object categories. Skin lesions Classification is shown in this work initially using a six-layered CNN performed on the skin cancer dataset to classify seven classes of lesions with 10015 images. Exploratory data analysis of the dataset is performed to identify any outliers and to verify the balance of samples in each class. It was observed after 50 epochs, the training accuracy was 98.03% and the testing accuracy was 67.40%. To avoid the overfitting observed in the CNN approach, the pre-trained transfer learning models, Resnet50 and Densenet121 were finetuned with data augmentation to handle the imbalance of samples present in seven classes. The results obtained prove that the Densenet121 model achieves high performance compared with the other Resnet50 model after augmentation. © 2024 IEEE.

A wireless sensor network (WSN) is a system of interconnected sensors that can gather environmental information. On the other hand, data redundancy is a common source of problems with WSNs. The literature presents a plethora of approaches. Despite these mechanisms’ best efforts, most current systems still need help with difficulties like noise, redundancy, or application specificity. Thus, we proposed an algorithm to overcome all the problems with redundant and highly correlated data. The longest common subsequence (LCSS)-enabled sliding window algorithm can resolve issues in constrained networks related to energy conservation and congestion control. The proposed method exhibits remarkable performance on multiple benchmark datasets. According to the result analysis, the suggested technique can outperform its equivalents for a range of data sets by about 32%. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

The neuron doctrine defines the neuron as the basic unit of the nervous system, which drives the dynamic behavior of our organs. This has led to neurons becoming the focus of modern neuroscience research and to the rise of neurocomputing, in which we try to digitally simulate human behavior. The goal being to better understand the human nervous system and gain more control over neuron-related diseases, helping doctors establish faster and more reliable medical diagnoses. In this context, we aim to simulate eye diseases and vision problems by convolving input images using a new class of neural networks based on a variable structure model of neurons presented in [1]. In this work, we focus on recreating the common convolution filters as a first step. This is the first time in neurocomputing literature that dendritic neurons have been used for dynamic convolution kernels generation and eye diseases simulation. We start with a presentation of our upgrades to the model’s flexibility and accuracy. Then, we propose a novel kernel generator algorithm to convolve the input images. Finally, we show its promising results in creating the outline, pixelization, and night convolution kernels, as well as control some metrics, including brightness and data retention. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2025.

The integration of Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) technology into smart grid systems has resulted in unprecedented advantages in terms of effectiveness and dependability. Nevertheless, this interconnectivity also brings about fresh cybersecurity obstacles, specifically with the identification and prevention of Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) data manipulation threats. Efficient feature selection is vital in improving the robustness of IIoT smart grids against such attacks. The Hybrid Green Anaconda and Marine Predictor Optimization (HGAMPO) algorithm is a promising strategy for choosing significant features in the detection of manipulation in PMU data. This paper presents a comprehensive examination of PMU data manipulation attacks, emphasises the significance of feature selection, and introduces the HGAMPO algorithm. HGAMPO is a revolutionary approach that combines the Green Anaconda Optimization Algorithm (GAOA) and Marine Predictor Optimization (MPO) to optimise feature subsets. It draws inspiration from nature to provide an innovative solution. The effectiveness of HGAMPO in IIoT smart grid contexts is proved through real-world examples and compared with older approaches. The evaluation metrics and experimental results clearly demonstrate the exceptional performance of HGAMPO in detecting attacks that manipulate PMU data. This article provides an overview of upcoming study areas and the possible influence of HGAMPO on cybersecurity in IIoT smart grids. © 2024 IEEE.

Comparative Analysis of Ensemble Learning Techniques for Brain Tumor Classification

For the evaluation of our work, we used a brain tumor MRI dataset obtained from Kaggle for the experimental analysis. Our study investigates the performance of ensemble learning techniques for brain tumor classification. This study focuses on comparing the efficacy of homogenous ensemble classifiers, exemplified by the Random Forest (RF) algorithm, against heterogeneous ensemble classifiers like Voting and Stacking, this study embarks on a thorough evaluation journey. Our evaluation is not limited to accuracy measures only;instead, it surrounds recall, ROC AUC, precision, and F1-score, for better assessment of classifiers’ performance. Our findings demonstrate that the Random Forest classifier achieved an accuracy of 99%, an F1 score of 0.99%, and AUC of 0.99%, outperforming other ensemble techniques like Voting and Stacking classifiers. Building upon an observed assessment performed on an appropriately selected brain tumor dataset, we provide solid empirical support demonstrating that RF not only performs better than base classifiers but also outperforms the heterogeneous ensemble methods in terms of many different performance measures. Furthermore, we discuss the specific reason that makes RF outperform other algorithms in this dataset and discuss the robustness and flexibility of this method. By unscrambling these insights, this paper addresses to fill gaps in the existing knowledge regarding the ensemble learning techniques in medical imaging, particularly for brain tumor classification diagnostics. © 2024 Slovene Society Informatika. Air pollution is a significant environmental hazard in modern society because of its serious impact on human health and the environment. In point of fact, there has been a substantial rise in the levels of pollution in the environment over the course of the past few years. Data analyst is commonly encountering the issue of data missing. It is crucial to handle them efficiently to get more accurate and dependable data analysis findings. This study aims to improve understanding of data missing mechanisms, data imputation techniques, and examine the efficacy of frequently utilized data imputation techniques on quantitative datasets. Analysts and data scientists frequently face the challenge of missing data in their investigations. Therefore, it is essential to handle them in an efficient manner so as to gain improved and more trustworthy results through the analysis of the data. The objective of this research is to enhance comprehension of data missing processes and data imputed methods, while also evaluating the effectiveness of data imputed approaches often employed in quantitative datasets. A complete comparison of 5 different data imputation methods is presented in this article. These approaches include mean imputation, median imputation, mode imputation, kNN imputation and Linear Regression. For the purpose of analysing and contrasting the efficacy of the various data imputation approaches, we have utilized five distinct numeric datasets that were gathered from several air pollution repositories. Standardized Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) is the technique for assessing the efficacy of data imputation techniques. According on the findings of the analysis, the kNN imputation approach offers superior performance than the other methods. There is no correlation between the length of the dataset or the number of values that are missing in the dataset and the accuracy of the data imputed approach. © 2024 IEEE.

Layer-Wise External Attention by Well-Localized Attention Map for Efficient Deep Anomaly Detection

The external attention mechanism offers a promising approach to enhance image anomaly detection (Hayakawa et al., in: IMPROVE, pp. 100-–110, 2023). Nevertheless, the effectiveness of this method is contingent upon the judicious selection of an intermediate layer with external attention. In this study, we performed a comprehensive series of experiments to clarify the mechanisms through which external attention improves detection performance. We assessed the performance of the LEA-Net (Hayakawa et al., in: IMPROVE, pp. 100–110, 2023), which implements layer-wise external attention, using MVTec AD and Plant Village datasets. The detection performances of the LEA-Net were compared with that of the baseline model under different anomaly maps generated by three unsupervised approaches. In addition, we investigated the relationship between the detection performance of LEA-Net and the selection of an attention point, which means an intermediate layer where external attention is applied. The findings reveal that the synergy between the dataset and the generated anomaly map influenced the effectiveness of the LEA-Net. For poorly localized anomaly maps, the selection of the attention point becomes a pivotal factor in determining detection efficiency. At shallow attention points, a well-localized attention map successfully notably improves the detection performance. For deeper attention points, the overall intensity of the attention map is essential;this intensity can be substantially amplified by layer-wise external attention, even for a low-intensity anomaly map. Overall, the results suggest that for layer-wise external attention, the positional attributes of anomalies hold greater significance than the overall intensity or visual appearance of the anomaly map. © The Author(s) 2024.
