Revolutionizing cardiovascular health: integrating deep learning techniques for predictive analysis of personal key indicators in heart disease

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) remain a global burden, highlighting the need for innovative approaches for early detection and intervention. This study investigates the potential of deep learning, specifically convolutional neural networks (CNNs), to improve the prediction of heart disease risk using key personal health markers. Our approach revolutionizes traditional healthcare predictive modeling by integrating CNNs, which excel at uncovering subtle patterns and hidden interactions among various health indicators such as blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and lifestyle factors. To achieve this, we leverage advanced neural network architectures. The model utilizes embedding layers to transform categorical data into numerical representations, convolutional layers to extract spatial features, and dense layers to model complex interactions and predict CVD risk. Regularization techniques like dropout and batch normalization, along with hyperparameter optimization, enhance model generalizability and performance. Rigorous validation against conventional methods demonstrates the model’s superiority, with a significantly higher R2 value of 0.994. This achievement underscores the model’s potential as a valuable tool for clinicians in CVD prevention and management. The study also emphasizes the need for interpretability in deep learning models and addresses ethical considerations to ensure responsible implementation in clinical practice. © The Author(s) 2024.

Multiple antennas at transmitter and receiver have significantly improved the performance of wireless communications systems. Traditionally, space-time coding, beamforming, or spatial multiplexing are applied to achieve diversity, SNR, and multiplexing gains, respectively. A different concept is pursued with Generalized Spatial Modulation (GSM). It conveys information through the selection of active antennas from a set of available antennas in addition to the transmission of conventional modulation symbols. This results in sparse transmit vectors, and detection algorithms known from compressed sensing can be applied. In this paper, Vector Approximate Message Passing (VAMP) is considered for the detection of GSM signals in massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems. Its performance is improved by introducing structured redundancy in space or in time. In order to exploit this redundancy, the VAMP algorithm has to be extended by an additional graph layer. The resulting performance is evaluated by analyzing the error rates and the throughput obtained from Monte Carlo simulations. © 2025 IEEE.

A novel electrochemical aptasensor was designed for the simultaneous detection of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) and deoxynivalenol (DON) using dual-working microelectrodes and PDMS-based microfluidic channels. The system provides high sensitivity, with detection limits of 7.74 pg/mL for AFB1 and 0.172 ng/mL for DON across broad ranges (0.03 - 300 ng/mL for AFB1, 0.3 - 3000 ng/mL for DON). Results can be obtained within 20 minutes, and the platform exhibits excellent reproducibility, selectivity, and stability. Validation with corn extract highlights its potential for on-site food safety monitoring. © 2025 IEEE.

Mechanical Constraint Identification in Model-Mediated Teleoperation

Model-Mediated Teleoperation (MMT) is a form of teleoperation where a model is used to display operator commands to the environment and environmental feedback to the operator. This circumvents the performance-stability trade-off to which many other teleoperation methods are prone under high time delays. An aspect of MMT which has received little attention is the modelling of rigid-body constraints, which are important for many manipulation tasks. In this paper, we detail a description of rigid body constraints and highlight a specific type of contact: the Lower Pair, of which the contacts found in hinged doors and household drawers, for instance, are examples. We also present a method for estimating these Lower Pairs and test it in a real world scenario. Results show that it is robust to measurement noise, as well as small amounts of movement in the constrained directions. © 2016 IEEE.

Federated architecture for serverless platforms aimed at transparent execution in the edge-cloud continuum

The stateless nature of serverless computing makes it a viable choice for establishing the long-desired edge-cloud continuum. Current efforts to provide a unified view over both the cloud and the edge are vendor-centric, with proprietary interfaces. This makes interoperability between different infrastructures difficult, while also raising questions about future-proofing. To overcome this problem, we introduce a federation layer which provides a unified view over distinct edge-cloud solutions. We summarise the current open questions and define a set of functional requirements for a unifying federation layer. We identify the main pillars required for fulfilling the requirements from a technical perspective and discuss concrete implementation approaches. Finally, we also showcase a practical verification of the architecture, leveraging a federation of geographically distributed Kubernetes clusters. The verification is done using multiple serverless runtime options, with computing environments scattered both in the cloud and in the edge, overcoming various connectivity restrictions in place. Smartphones contain a vast amount of information about their users, which can be used as evidence in criminal cases. However, the sheer volume of data can make it challenging for forensic investigators to identify and use the most relevant information. Neutrosophic logic is a generalization of fuzzy logic that allows for uncertainty and vagueness, making it a more potent tool for dealing with the ambiguity of real-world data. The proposed framework aims to identify and utilize the most relevant information for forensic investigators, making it easier to solve criminal cases using Neutrosophic logic. This novel approach provides a more powerful tool for dealing with the ambiguity of smartphone data, ultimately improving the accuracy and effectiveness of forensic investigations. Our research has utilized Neutrosophic logic to evaluate the degree of truth, falsity, or Indeterminacy of this information. Additionally, this study analyzes conversations between individuals using Excel’s fuzzy lookup add-in to determine the percentage of truth and false in each conversation. The results were compiled into a dataset and utilized a Neutrosophic Python code to evaluate the information. The results indicate the percentage of truth, false, and Indeterminacy in each conversation and which can be used to determine its admissibility as evidence and which not. © 2025, University of New Mexico. There is a significant correlation between depression, verbal behavior, and facial expressions. By analyzing patients' audio and facial visuals, depression assessments can be conducted. However, existing work is predominantly based on single modalities. Additionally, acquiring a sufficient amount of labeled data in clinical settings is challenging and costly. To leverage multimodal audio-visual data while addressing the issue of lacking trainable labeled data, we propose an audiovisual multimodal semi-supervised depression detection model based on Graph Neural Networks (AVS-GNN). This model first extracts dual-modality temporal information from audio features and facial visual features of patients and obtains modality-specific high-level embedding representations through graph representation learning. Subsequently, it utilizes graph-based contrastive unsupervised learning to capture consistency information between pairs of unlabeled samples across different modalities and to facilitate cross-modal interactions. We specifically designed a hybrid weighted pseudo-labeling strategy to assign high-confidence pseudo-labels to unlabeled data and further retraining the model. Experiments on two depression datasets show that this model outperforms baseline methods across all evaluation metrics. © 2025 IEEE.

Security to text (S2T): multi-layered based security approaches for secret text content

In the digital world, text data is produced in an unstructured manner across various communication channels. Extracting valuable information from such data with security is crucial and requires the development of techniques in text mining, information retrieval, and natural language processing (NLP). To solve this issue, we introduce two novel approaches: keyword extraction (KE) and a multi-layered secret sharing scheme (MLSS) to provide security to extracted keywords rather than overall text documents. The KE approach encompasses a sequence of text pre-processing procedures, including tokenization, stopword removal, stemming, and bag of words representation, followed by indexing. This methodology aims to efficiently extract keywords from text datasets. For this research work, we have proposed three datasets, including text messages, whatsapp messages, and electronic mail. MLSS enhances the security of extracted textual data by leveraging text pre-processing steps. This scheme ensures better confidentiality and the non-revealment of sensitive information. Additionally, we evaluate our KE model on our dataset as well as on standard datasets. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed security to text (S2T) model, which outperform existing state-of-the-art approaches. Video forgery is one of the most serious problems affecting the credibility and reliability of video content. Therefore, detecting video forgery presents a major challenge for researchers due to the diversity of forgery types, the modernity of the programs used in forgery operations, and the abundance of information and content present in videos. The seriousness of this issue arises from the widespread use of videos in vital fields that require very high accuracy with no room for doubt or error, such as courtrooms, journalism, and others. Copy-move forgery is one of the most common and dangerous types of video forgery because of the difficulty in identifying it with the naked eye and the great diversity of forgery techniques involved in this particular type. One of the biggest challenges researchers have faced in the past is the complexity of the steps required to detect forgery in videos, leading to significant computational complexity and time consumption. The proposed method also aims to achieve better results than previous methods while reducing computational operations. Ultimately, forgery is detected with great efficiency. Compared to previous methods used for detecting copy-move forgery in the Rewind dataset, the proposed method achieves the highest F1, reaching 0.86, with a significant difference of 0.13 compared to the best result of the previous methods. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2025.

Exploiting Multi-Level Data Uncertainty for Japanese-Chinese Neural Machine Translation

The performance of Neural Machine Translation (NMT) heavily depends on the severity of data uncertainty existing in the training examples. In terms of its causes, data uncertainty can be categorized into intrinsic and extrinsic uncertainty, both of which can increase the learning difficulty in NMT, and lead to degradation in translation performance. To cope with this challenge, we propose a simple yet effective method to estimate the data uncertainty and incorporate it into the adaptive training of NMT, which can mitigate the hurt brought by the uncertain data. Our method consists of two modules: 1) we propose a mBERT based model for estimating token-level and sentence-level data uncertainties jointly, which is trained with multi-task learning;2) we propose heterogeneous ways of incorporating the derived multi-level uncertainties into the NMT training by using soft-masked embedding and weighted loss. Extensive experiments on Japanese↔Chinese translation show that our proposed methods substantially outperform the strong baselines in terms of BLEU scores, and verify the effectiveness of modeling data uncertainty in NMT.
