Tsunamis pose a great threat to coastal infrastructures. Bridges without adequate provisions for earthquake and tsunami loading generally are vulnerable when a tsunami occurs. During the last two disastrous tsunami events (i.e., the tsunami in the Indian Ocean and the tsunami that struck Japan), many bridges were damaged by the waves created by the tsunamis. In this paper, in order to address this crucial problem, we used soft computing techniques to design and develop a process that simulates the effects of perforations in the girders of bridges on reducing the forces applied on the bridge when a tsunami occurs. Soft computing methods have very good learning and prediction capabilities, which make it an effective tool for dealing with the uncertainties encountered when waves are generated by a tsunami. Laboratory experiments were conducted to acquire a better understanding of the effects of the factors involved and to check the data required for the soft computing methods. In order to predict the effects of perforations in the girder of a bridge on force reduction, novel intelligent soft computing schemes, support vector regression (SVR), and adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) were investigated. In this study, the polynomial, linear, and radial basis function were used as the kernel function of the SVR to estimate the effects of perforations in a girder of a bridge. The performances of the proposed estimators were confirmed by simulation results. The SVR results were compared with the ANFIS results, and we observed that an improvement in predictive accuracy and the ability to generalize were achieved by the ANFIS approach.

This paper introduces a systematic approach to synthesize linear parameter-varying (LPV) representations of nonlinear (NL) systems which are originally defined by control affine state-space representations. The conversion approach results in LPV state-space representations in the observable canonical form. Based on the relative degree concept of NL systems, the states of a given NL representation are transformed to new coordinates that provide its normal form. In the SISO case, all nonlinearities of the original system are embedded in one NL function which is factorized to construct the LPV form. An algorithms is proposed for this purpose. The resulting transformation yields an LPV model where the scheduling parameter depends on the derivatives of the inputs and outputs of the system. In addition, if the states of the NL model can be measured or estimated, then the procedure can be modified to provide LPV models scheduled by these states. Examples are included for illustration. © IFAC.

Stand for testing the electrical race car engine

An engine test stand created especially for research of electrical race car is described in the paper. The car is an aim of Silesian Greenpower project whose participants build and test electrical vehicles to take part in international races in Great Britain. The engine test stand is used to test and measure the characteristics of vehicles and their engines. It has been designed particularly to test the electric cars engineered by students of Silesian Greenpower project. The article contains a description how the test stand works and shows its versatility in many areas. The paper presents both construction of the test stand, control system and sample results of conducted research. The engine test stand was designed and modified using PLM Siemens NX 8.5. The construction of the test stand is highly modular, which means it can be used both for testing the vehicle itself or for tests without the vehicle. The test stand has its own wheel, motor, powertrain and braking system with second engine. Such solution enables verifying various concepts without changing the construction of the vehicle. The control system and measurement system are realized by enabling National Instruments product myRIO (RIO - Reconfigurable Input/Output). This controller in combination with powerful LabVIEW environment performs as an advanced tool to control torque and speed simultaneously. It is crucial as far as the test stand is equipped in two motors - the one being tested and the braking one. The feedback loop is realized by an optical encoder cooperating with the rotor mounted on the wheel. The results of tests are shown live on the screen both as a chart and as single values. After performing several tests there is a report generated. The engine test stand is widely used during process of the Silesian Greenpower vehicle design. Its versatility enables powertrain testing, wheels and tires tests, thermal analysis and more.

This paper explores a relatively new methodological approach for the field integrating learning and education, with other research areas, such as neurobiological, cognitive, and computational sciences. Specifically, presented work is an interdisciplinary piece of research aiming to simulate appropriately a challenging and critical issue concerned with academic performance in e-learning systems. Namely, considering face to face tutoring phenomenon observed while an interactive e-learning process is performed. Referring to strong interest announced by educationalists to know how neurons' synapses inside the brain are interconnected. Together to perform communication processing among brain regions. Herein, a special attention has been developed towards dynamical academic evaluation of timely based brain learning via face to face (FTF) interactive tutoring. In other words, this piece of research presents an interdisciplinary realistic dynamic investigation. For academic performance phenomenon associated with e-learners' contribution as time response performed human's brain neuronal function. Accordingly, Artificial Neural Networks (ANN~s) have been adopted for realistic modeling of academic performance evaluation based on timely dependant student's response till attaining learning convergence (desired output). After running of designed realistic simulation program, some interesting results have been presented. Interestingly, individual differences' phenomenon observed via after statistical analysis of obtained simulation results.

One of the techniques which can be used to quantitatively evaluate images statistically is the so-called random-walk approach. The resulting Hurst exponent is a measure of the complexity of the picture. Especially long, fine elements in the image, such as fibres, influence the Hurst exponent significantly. Thus, determination of the Hurst exponent has been suggested as new method to measure the hairiness of yarns or knitted fabrics, since existing hairiness measurement instruments are based on different measurement principles which are not comparable. While the principal usability of this method for hairiness detection has been shown in former projects, the absolute value of the calculated Hurst exponents depends on the technique to take the photographic image of a sample, to transfer it into a monochrome picture, and on possible image processing steps. This article gives an overview of edge detection filters, possible definitions of the threshold value between black and white for the transformation into a monochrome image, etc. It shows how these parameters should be chosen in case of typical textile samples and correlates the challenges of this novel method with well-known problems of common techniques to measure yarn and fabric hairiness.

In this paper comparison of the two innovative signal processing methods for analysis of both EEG and EMG biomedical signals is in short presented. The reason for that is caused by the fact, that nowadays the broad analysis of various biomedical signals is extremely popular. The first method presented in this paper relies on kernel density estimators application. Implementation of such method enables construction of densitograms for the examined bio-signals. One of the biggest advantages of this method is that it allows to obtain statistically filtered signals, which results in making the whole signal processing task significantly quicker. The second method described in this paper is based on basic mathematical operations only. Despite its simplicity the whole process can be implemented on almost any hardware platform, including those with very limited computational capabilities. Also it makes the task quick. In accordance with the conducted experiments - the method is also efficient and as it can also be implemented on embedded platform and the algorithm can be rewritten in any programming language, the potential application of this method is wide.

In addition to simplicity, the DTC of the IM allows a good torque control in steady-state and transient operating conditions. However, high torque ripple is produced, which is reflected in speed estimation responses. It also increases acoustical noise and makes the voltage source inverter operated in high and variable switching frequency, requiring a high sampling frequency. In this paper, a simple effective ANN-based DTC of the induction machine is proposed. Neural networks with a simple architecture are designed and implemented in influential points of the direct torque control block of the three phase induction machine in order to improve its dynamic performance while preserving the DTC structure simplicity as much as possible. In particular, this paper proposes to reduce, on the one hand, the torque ripple and commutation frequency. Neural comparators are used to select the appropriate bandwidth for the torque and flux hysteresis controllers. Their aim is to optimize the ripple level in the developed torque and flux. On the other hand, a neural speed controller is designed in order to improve the system ability to respond rapidly to changes in process variables and mitigate the effects of external perturbations. The performance of the proposed control are tested in simulation and highlighted by comparing to the conventional DTC control based on conventional hysteresis comparators and conventional PI speed controller. The obtained results show the feasibility and good performances of the proposed control.

In this paper, we proposed a lightweight approach of hand gesture recognition for appliance control system, which is a new corner based detector with skin detection and foreground extraction. The skin detection is used as a preprocessing segmentation, and motion based foreground extraction for hand segmentation is also applied to make it more accuracy in variation of light condition, contrast between skin and circumstance. After hand segmentation is done, light-weight corner based recognition is used to recognize the meaning of hand gesture. The performance and computational complexity is evaluated at last as well. The experiments shown our approach has the advantages over the conventional hand gesture recognition.

In the existing adaptively secure ABE (attribute-based encryption) schemes, the decryption cost goes linearly with the number of attributes that are used in decryption. An adaptively secure key-policy ABE (FKP-ABE) scheme with fast decryption is proposed, where constant size of computation overhead is implemented in decryption. This scheme is constructed on composite order bilinear groups and supports any monotonic access structure that can be expressed by LSSS (linear secret sharing schemes).
