The improved full pneumatic climbing robot Sky Cleaner IV has recently been developed as an intelligent demonstrator and test bed for the implementation of nonlinear locomotion control. Pneumatic actuators control the robot's movement, reducing its weight and increasing its dexterity. The pneumatic system of the robot includes X, Y and Z cylinders, a waist cylinder, brush cylinders and vacuum suckers. The major challenge of the pneumatic system is to achieve precise position control of the two rodless linear X and Y cylinders since the system is nonlinear. Two novel ideas are introduced to the pneumatic actuating system. Firstly, the X and Y cylinders feature an improved pneumatic scheme that drives two groups of four 2-position-2-port high speed on-off valves to adjust the pressure in the two chambers of each cylinder. This improves the pneumatic stiffness of the cylinders remarkably. Secondly, considering the effects of friction and movement acceleration of the cylinder, a compensating variable bang-bang controller is presented to control the cylinders' movement and keep the merits while eliminating the oscillation. The experimental results prove that the two approaches can effectively improve the system's stiffness and control its quality.

Higher participation levels of wind power in power systems will increase the need for flexible back-up generation to balance the differences between predicted and realized wind power production. This is often an expensive solution. With distributed energy resources and more ICT at the demand side, novel, and possibly cheaper, ways for imbalance minimization arise. Micro combined heat-and-power (micro-CHP) is a novel domestic-level generation technology, producing heat and power simultaneously. Clusters of micro-CHPs can function as flexible virtual power plants (VPPs). This paper presents the design of an online coordination scheme that can substantially reduce the imbalance volumes and the associated costs for wind power traders by actively controlling a VPP comprising micro-CHP systems. It is shown that the imbalance volume and associated cost can be reduced by 73 % and 38 %, respectively.

Polynomials are one of the most powerful functions that have been used in many fields of mathematics such as curve fitting and regression. Low order polynomials are desired for their smoothness, good local approximation and interpolation. Being smooth, they can be used to locally approximate almost any derivable function. This means that when linear functions fail in approximation (e.g. where the first order Taylor expansion equals zero) polynomial functions can be used in local approximation, such that one can achieve better estimations at extremums. In this paper, application of polynomial kernel functions in locally linear neurofuzzy models is shown. Using polynomial kernels in local models, better local approximations in prediction of chaotic time series such as Mackey-Glass is achieved, and the capability of the neurofuzzy network is enhanced.

The joystick is the operation interface of electric wheelchair. The user needs to operate it in accordance with machine's operational procedure specifications. Therefore the joystick is convenience operation system for the system side rather than the user side We focus on the body motions which humans have, and try to realize a new type of interface which replaces conventional joystick. There is a body motion which comes from instinctive adjustment functions to control changes of body shape caused by voluntary actions. We use this kind of motion as an interface and call it HBMI(Human Body Motion Interface). In this paper, we set a prototype based on the experiment for deriving a suitable measurement to detect human body motion. The evaluation of HBMI by using SD method is also presented.

Abstract Problem of scheduling n preemptive jobs on a single processor is studied, in which for each job a distinct due window is given in advance. If a job is completed within its due window, then it incurs no penalty. Otherwise, it incurs a job-independent earliness or tardiness cost. The objective is to find a job schedule such that a maximum of weighted costs associated with earliness and tardiness is minimized. Properties of optimal solutions of this problem are established and an algorithm based on them is presented. It is proved that the analysed problem is solvable in O ( n 2 ) time.

This paper presents a patient specific deformable heart model that involves the known electric and mechanic properties of the cardiac cells and tissue. The accuracy and efficiency of the algorithm was tested for anisotropic and inhomogeneous 3D domains using ten Tusscher's and Nygen's cardiac cell models. During propagation of depolarization wave, the kinetic, compositional and rotational anisotropy is included in the tissue, organ and torso model. The applied patient specific parameters were determined by an evolutionary computation method. An intensive parameter reduction was performed using the abstract formulation of the searching space. This patient specific parameter representation enables the adjustment of deformable model parameters in real-time. The validation process was performed using measured ECG and ultrasound image records that were compared with simulated signals and shapes using an abstract, parameterized evaluation criterion.

This research develops a machine's interface which has features of universal design and offers an intuitive operation for complex tasks. We set a development of interface of electric wheelchair as a practical example, and proceed with this research. The joystick is the operation interface of general electric wheelchair. The user needs to operate it in accordance with machine's operational procedure specifications. Therefore the joystick is convenience operation system for the system side rather than the user side We focus on the body motions which humans have, and try to realize a new type of interface which replaces conventional joystick. In order to measure the human body motion, we adopt the force distribution on the wheelchair. Since pressure distributions on a wheelchair appear on a seat face and a seat back, we examined which parts have strong correlation with the body motion. As a result, it turned out that pressure distribution on a seat back has strong correlation with the body motion. Based on this result, we made a prototype and did a basic experiment. For the result of basic experiment, it was confirmed that the body motion could control a wheelchair.

In this article, the model reduction problem for a class of discrete-time polytopic uncertain switched linear systems with average dwell time switching is investigated. The stability criterion for general discrete-time switched systems is first explored, and a μ-dependent approach is then introduced for the considered systems to the model reduction solution. A reduced-order model is constructed and its corresponding existence conditions are derived via LMI formulation. The admissible switching signals and the desired reduced model matrices are accordingly obtained from such conditions such that the resulting model error system is robustly exponentially stable and has an exponential H∞ performance. A numerical example is presented to demonstrate the potential and effectiveness of the developed theoretical results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, a model-predictive control based framework is proposed for modeling and optimization of the health state of power system equipment. In the framework, a predictive health model is proposed that predicts the health state of the equipment based on its usage and maintenance actions. Based on the health state, the failure rate of the equipment can be estimated. We propose to use this predictive health model to predict the effects of different maintenance actions. The effects of maintenance actions over a future time window are evaluated by a cost function. The maintenance actions are optimized using this cost function. The proposed framework is applied in the optimization of the loading of transformers based on the thermal degradation of the paper insulation.

In this article, the H∞ model reduction problem for a class of discrete-time Markov jump linear systems (MJLS) with partially known transition probabilities is investigated. The proposed systems are more general, relaxing the traditional assumption in Markov jump systems that all the transition probabilities must be completely known. A reduced-order model is constructed and the LMI-based sufficient conditions of its existence are derived such that the corresponding model error system is internally stochastically stable and has a guaranteed H∞ performance index. A numerical example is given to illustrate the effectiveness and potential of the developed theoretical results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
