Multifunctional control system to enhance the operational capability of the unmanned multirotor platform dedicated to the diagnostics of building structures

Drones have become common devices that are increasingly used, from toy mini drones to very advanced autonomous flying platforms used in various industries. The safety of using engineering structures and the need to shorten the time of carrying out diagnostic activities, and thus reduce costs, force the use of innovative tools to carry out an automated and unmanned process of assessing the technical condition of existing engineering structures, especially large-size ones, including bridges strengthened with external FRP (fibre reinforced polymer) composite overlays. There are conventional methods for assessing the technical condition of existing building structures conducted by inspectors and experts, involving the use of typical inspection and diagnostic tools. During the research, it was found that it is possible to conduct an automated and unmanned process of assessing the technical condition of engineering structures using an unmanned flying platform equipped with a thermal imaging diagnostic device. The uniqueness of the presented solution is that the drone is equipped with a docking module that allows the drone to be temporarily attached to the structure being diagnosed for the duration of diagnostic activities. To ensure appropriate conditions for structural diagnostics, a unique system of automated diagnostic processes and a multi-stage structure of the control system in all phases of operation were developed. The article presents a solution for the control system based on control consistent with the reference model. In particular, the focus was on the difficult and dangerous issue of altitude control during the docking phase. Simulation tests conducted in the MATLAB/Simulink environment, as well as laboratory and field tests on a real drone proved the correctness of the proposed solutions, which facilitated the undisturbed operation of the diagnostic module. © 2025 The Author(s).

The novel Coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic has begun in China and is still affecting thousands of patient livesworldwide *** X-ray and Computed Tomography are the gold standardmedical imaging modalities for diagnosing potentially infected COVID-19 cases,applying Ultrasound(US)imaging technique to accomplish this crucial diagnosing task has attracted many physicians *** this article,we propose two modified deep learning classifiers to identify COVID-19 and pneumonia diseases in US images,based on generative adversarial neural networks(GANs).The proposed image classifiers are a semi-supervised GAN and a modifiedGANwith auxiliary *** one includes a modified discriminator to identify the class of the US image using semi-supervised learning technique,keeping its main function of defining the“realness”of tested *** tests have been successfully conducted on public dataset of US images acquired with a convex US *** study demonstrated the feasibility of using chest US images with two GAN classifiers as a new radiological tool for clinical check of COVID-19 *** results of our proposed GAN models showed that high accuracy values above 91.0%were obtained under different sizes of limited training data,outperforming other deep learning-based methods,such as transfer learning models in the recent ***,the clinical implementation of our computer-aided diagnosis of US-COVID-19 is the future work of this study.

Fault diagnosis in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) is important to protect communities and ecosystems from toxic elements discharged into water. In this sense, fault identification of sensors plays an important role as they are the key components of the water plants control, especially because environmental legislation is very strict when referring to failures or anomalies in WWTPs. This paper analyzes the performances of two Deep Learning models, a Feedforward Neural Network (FFNN) and a 1D Convolution Neural Network (1DCNN) for identifying five operating states of the dissolved oxygen (DO) sensor: normal and faulty (bias, stuck, spike and precision degradation faults). The experiments were conducted on the Benchmark Simulator Model No 2 (BSM2) developed by the IWA Task Group. The performance of the Deep Learning (DL) classifiers was evaluated via accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score metrics. The best overall classification accuracy was obtained by FFNN, 98.32% for training and 98.30% for testing. © 2023 IEEE.

Identification of coexistence of biological and non-biological aerosol particles with DAPI (4′,6-diamidino-2-phenylindole) stain

The fluorescent dye 4′,6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) has been widely used to stain microorganisms in various environment media. We applied DAPI fluorescence enumeration to airborne microorganisms and found that non-biological particles, including organic compounds, minerals, and soot, were also visible upon exposure to UV excitation under fluorescence microscope. Using laboratory-prepared biological particles as the control, we investigated the feasibility of identifying both biological and non-biological particles in the same sample with DAPI staining. We prepared biological (bacterial, fungi, and plant detritus) and non-biological (biochar, soot, mineral, metal, fly ash, salt) particles in the laboratory and enumerated the particles and their mixture with DAPI. We found that mineral particles were transparent, and biochar, soot, metals and fly ash particles were black under a filter set at excitation 350/50 nm and emission 460/50 nm bandpass (DAPI-BP), while biological particles were blue, as expected. Particles of the water-soluble salts NaCl and (NH_(4))_(2)SO_(4) were yellow under a filter set at excitation 340–380 nm and emission 425 nm long pass (DAPI-LP). Case studies with samples of dustfall, atmospheric aerosols and surface soils could allow for the quantification of the relative number of different types of particles and particles with organic matter or salt coating as well. Fluorescence enumeration with DAPI stain is thus able to identify the co-existence of biological and non-biological particles in the air, at least to the extent of those examined in this study.

Nowadays, we can observe a growing interest in sustainable buildings. Sustainable development cannot be achieved without introducing innovations in green building;therefore, innovations are important component of sustainable engineers’ job. Innovative, sustainable buildings have numerous advantages, but it should be remembered that their design, and construction is more complex and associated with higher risk and uncertainty than traditional buildings. The goal of this work is to propose a new model of risk management which is based on fault tree analysis and Fuzzy sets theory. Sixteen unwanted events in innovative, sustainable building projects were identified, a fuzzy fault tree was developed. The application of the proposed approach was shown on one example of innovative, sustainable building in Poland. Two variants of project execution were compared: with and without introducing risk management strategy. Application of fuzzy sets by using linguistic variables by experts when assessing risks of particular unwanted events enabled to decrease uncertainty and avoid problems with obtaining the crisp values of the basic events probability. Application of the proposed model allowed us to identify the critical risks of the project, calculate top event risk, and compare the project’s risk level after introducing risk management strategies. The proposed model is helpful for designers, constructors, owners, and clients to develop successful innovative, sustainable buildings. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

One of the key features of blockchain is high reliability, due to its high redundancy nature. While creating many replications across nodes serves well for storing relatively small data entries, this cannot be used with big files, as it might be impossible to replicate many huge files across many nodes. Here we present a DApps-based system that can lead to improving the total reliability of distributed files storage systems by managing the internal processes using DApps instead of a classical centralized load balancer. For the same reason, known reliability calculation methods for distributed file storage systems are not suitable for assessing the reliability of DApps-based systems. They do not take into account the automatic recovery time of files. In this article, we will deduce the reliability method for DApps-based system, then compare the resulting reliability with other existing systems, and discuss the benefits gained in total. © 2023 IEEE.

In this paper, we employ dual-mode unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) equipped with both the active radio frequency (RF) module and aerial reconfigurable intelligent surface (ARIS) to assist ground users (GUs) for both the downlink energy transfer and uplink data transmission in a wireless-powered network. To maximize the GUs' minimum throughput, we propose a collaborative mode switching scheme for the dual-mode UAVs to dynamically switch between the active RF and passive ARIS modes according to the time-varying channel conditions. Besides, we jointly optimize the GUs' transmission control, the UAVs' beamforming, and the trajectory planning strategies. This optimization problem is intractable directly due to the non-convexity in both the objective and constraints. We design an iterative algorithm to first decompose the original problem into several subproblems, and then solve each subproblem individually by approximate optimization methods. Numerical results verify that the UAVs' collaborative mode switching along with their trajectories efficiently improves the transmission performance compared to the benchmarks in which both UAVs are operating in one fixed mode. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper focuses on the fully distributed dynamic event-triggered optimized backstepping (OB) containment control for a class of stochastic nonlinear high-order strict-feedback multiagent systems (MASs) based on reinforcement learning (RL) algorithm. Firstly, an OB control scheme is proposed using the critic-actor structure. In this scheme, neural networks are applied to approximate the value function and the controllers are derived from the gradients of simple positive functions. This approach simplifies the algorithm and effectively addresses two fundamental requirements commonly encountered in RL-based optimal control: known dynamics and persistent excitation. Furthermore, the static and dynamic event-triggered mechanisms are designed in order to reduce the control actions in the highest layer for nonlinear high-order stochastic MASs. Then, the distributed event-triggered control protocols based on RL are proposed for the strict-feedback nonlinear MASs with stochastic disturbances. Finally, simulation results are shown to demonstrate the effectiveness of the theoretical analysis. © 2014 IEEE.

This paper presents a PCB defect detection system utilizing the Real-Time Detection Transformer (RT-DETR) model. Originally designed for general object detection, we adapt RT-DETR for the specific task of PCB defect detection, achieving both high accuracy and rapid inference. Building on this baseline, we introduce re-parameterization techniques to further enhance the model's performance with less parameters computational cost. Additionally, we employ data augmentation strategies to enrich the diversity of the dataset, thereby improving the model's robustness and generalization capability. Through these efforts, the developed PCB defect detection system based on the RT-DETR model meets the expected requirements in terms of high accuracy and real-time inference speed. The code and models will be made publicly available. © 2024 IEEE.

In today's world, interconnected Vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANET) and intelligent transportation systems have become more popular. Although IoV can bring many benefits for the smart cities and provide comforts for the passengers, however, the increasing needs for keeping the QoS and QoE at an acceptable level in time sensitive applications seems crucial and needs to be investigated deeply. Also, allocating the right number of resources to avoid congestions and fill the deficiencies in a distributed manner is a challenging issue. So, with the increase in users, attention must be given to Quality of Service (QoS) and resource allocation. As the vehicle network provides information to provide safety, comfort, and entertainment to drivers and passengers, they are one of the most compelling research topics in intelligent transportation systems. TDMA protocol is used in this study to increase the efficiency of the network and the quality of service it provides. To solve the synchronization problem, the Markov method predicts the size of slots and frames. The scenario field is used in the Markov application section to better predict TDMA gaps on solving the synchronization problem. Accordingly, the higher the quality of service, the lower the latency of the network, and the better the allocation of resources. Optimizing allocation and quality of service is further motivated by reducing collision between packets. In terms of its implementation, this method is divided into two components, the first being the database proposal for constructing the Markov matrix and the second being the simulation on VanetMobisim and implementation of the network in NS2. The proposed method performed better in different scenarios in terms of computational complexity, PDF, latency, and overhead, as shown in the results section. © 2000-2011 IEEE.
