The Intelligent Ground Vehicle Competition (IGVC) is an annual competition for autonomous mobile robots held in the U.S. One of the vital functions of success in this competition is the autonomous lane-following function, which requires stable lane line recognition while avoiding obstacles and staying within lanes. The most popular approach for lane line recognition employs image sensors such as cameras. However, this approach has inherent weaknesses due to changes in outdoor lighting conditions, which are caused by limitations in the dynamic range of the image sensor. To overcome the weaknesses of image sensor-based lane line recognition, we propose a new method that utilizes the reflection intensity of the point cloud acquired by 3D LiDAR. The combination of point clouds and intensity enables the detection of both lane lines and obstacles without the effect of lighting condition changes. In this paper, we propose a novel, safer, and more robust lane-following algorithm that uses only 3D LiDAR, without the need for an image sensor. Lane line detection is performed by extracting a group of points with reflection intensities within a certain range while estimating the direction of the lane line and using a reflection intensity threshold value. Detected lane lines and obstacles are represented as a one-dimensional evaluation cost function, and a local target destination is determined in the direction with the lowest cost. This enables robust control regardless of outdoor lighting conditions. The performance of lane-following, obstacle avoidance, and real-time operation were evaluated in a simulation environment.

Predicting the critical behavior of complex dynamic systems via learning the governing mechanisms

Critical points separate distinct dynamical regimes of complex systems, often delimiting functional or macroscopic phases in which the system operates. However, the long-term prediction of critical regimes and behaviors is challenging given the narrow set of parameters from which they emerge. Here, we propose a framework to learn the rules that govern the dynamic processes of a system. The learned governing rules further refine and guide the representative learning of neural networks from a series of dynamic graphs. This combination enables knowledge-based prediction for the critical behaviors of dynamical networked systems. We evaluate the performance of our framework in predicting two typical critical behaviors in spreading dynamics on various synthetic and real-world networks. Our results show that governing rules can be learned effectively and significantly improve prediction accuracy. Our framework demonstrates a scenario for facilitating the representability of deep neural networks through learning the underlying mechanism, which aims to steer applications for predicting complex behavior that learnable physical rules can drive. © 2025, CC BY.

The conversion efficiencies reported for Tin(Sn)halide-based perovskite solar cells(PSCs)fall a large gap behind those of lead halide-based PSCs,mainly because of poor film quality of the *** we report an efficient strategy based on a simple secondary crystallization growth(SCG)technique to improve film quality for tin halide-based PSCs by applying a series of functional amine chlorides on the perovskite *** were discovered to enhance the film crystallinity and suppress the oxidation of Sn^(2+)remarkably,hence reduce trap state density and non-irradiative recombination in the absorber ***,the SCG film holds the band levels matching better with carrier transport layers and herein favoring charge extraction at the device ***,a champion device efficiency of 8.07% was achieved alo ng with significant enhancements in VOC and JSC,in contrast to 5.35% of the control device ***,the SCG film-based devices also exhibit superior stability comparing with the control *** work explicitly paves a novel and general strategy for developing high performance lead-free PSCs.

Object-goal navigation requires agents to accurately locate and navigate to specified target objects in complex indoor environments. Existing methods primarily rely on single visual observations or simple semantic matching, making it difficult to effectively understand 3D scene relationships between target objects, which leads to inefficient path planning during navigation. Furthermore, the feature discrepancy between visual and language modalities poses challenges for accurate target identification. To address these issues, we propose Latent 3D Scene Graph with Aligned Visual-Language Perception (LSGAP), a novel approach that explicitly models 3D scene relationships between objects through depth perception and latent 3D scene graph construction. Meanwhile, we leverage multimodal pretraining strategies to achieve effective visual-language feature alignment, enhancing the model's target recognition capabilities. This end-to-end architectural design improves spatial cognition ability and enables more efficient navigation decision-making. We conduct extensive experimental evaluations in the AI2THOR interactive environment to validate the effectiveness of our navigator.

Dual-task Mutual Reinforcing Embedded Joint Video Paragraph Retrieval and Grounding

Video Paragraph Grounding (VPG) aims to precisely locate the most appropriate moments within a video that are relevant to a given textual paragraph query. However, existing methods typically rely on large-scale annotated temporal labels and assume that the correspondence between videos and paragraphs is known. This is impractical in real-world applications, as constructing temporal labels requires significant labor costs, and the correspondence is often unknown. To address this issue, we propose a Dual-task Mutual Reinforcing Embedded Joint Video Paragraph Retrieval and Grounding method (DMR-JRG). In this method, retrieval and grounding tasks are mutually reinforced rather than being treated as separate issues. DMR-JRG mainly consists of two branches: a retrieval branch and a grounding branch. The retrieval branch uses inter-video contrastive learning to roughly align the global features of paragraphs and videos, reducing modality differences and constructing a coarse-grained feature space to break free from the need for correspondence between paragraphs and videos. Additionally, this coarse-grained feature space further facilitates the grounding branch in extracting fine-grained contextual representations. In the grounding branch, we achieve precise cross-modal matching and grounding by exploring the consistency between local, global, and temporal dimensions of video segments and textual paragraphs. By synergizing these dimensions, we construct a fine-grained feature space for video and textual features, greatly reducing the need for large-scale annotated temporal labels. Meanwhile, we design a grounding reinforcement retrieval module (GRRM) that brings the coarse-grained feature space of the retrieval branch closer to the fine-grained feature space of the grounding branch, thereby reinforcing retrieval branch through grounding branch, and finally achieving mutual reinforcement between tasks. In this research, nature inspired metaheuristic optimization algorithms: Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) Techniques are formulated to tune optimal combinations of PID controller parameters for a quadruple tank level control application. The degree of relation of the best paring for both interacted control loops are justified by using Relative Gain Array (RGA) calculation. The overall system has been modeled and implemented in MATLAB/Simulink and performance evaluations has been done for time domain performance specifications of settling time, rise time, percentage overshoot and steady state error as comparison criterions of controllers. Accordingly, for the minimum phase case, GA tuned PID has settling time of 0.36sec and 0.31second for the tank 1 and tank 2 respectively. And PSO tuned PID controller has settling time of 0.96sec and 0.35sec for tank 1and tank 2 respectively. The quantitative and qualitative analysis of results reveals that there is fast dynamic response using GA PID relative to PSO PID even though the difference is not significant that may be due to stochastic feature of the metahueristic optimization algorithms. In summary, the optimal combination of PID controller algorithms’ parameters can give robust performance compared to PID controller designed using the classical approaches or manual tuning techniques.

Sinusoidal-Assisted Synchrosqueezing Transform: Algorithms and Biomedical Applications

Intermittent oscillation signals (IOSs) exist widely in biomedical systems. They are always contaminated by various randomness like noise and artifacts. Compared with traditional time-frequency analysis (TFA) methods, adaptive TFA methods show the significant advantages in separating IOSs. However, these methods are implemented by assuming that the signal is in a weakly noisy environment and have narrow-band limitation. Besides, it is difficult for these methods to alleviate the noise in the gap among time where IOSs happen. Therefore, in this paper, a new method called the sinusoidal-assisted synchrosqueezing transform (SASST) is proposed for separating IOSs in strongly noisy environment. The SASST method locates the IOSs with the aid of a sinusoidal signal. Such a sinusoidal signal fills the energy blank in the gap between time where IOSs happen. This enables that the ridge detection approach, which is the necessary tool for mode retrieval of SST-based methods, focuses on the assisted sinusoidal signal, rather than noise. Thus, the background noise in the gap is suppressed. Moreover, this sinusoidal-assisted framework can be introduced into any SST-based TFA methods. Depending on the characteristics of different biomedical signals, different SST-based methods are chosen to achieve better separation. As a result, SASST is capable of extracting both narrow- and wide-band IOSs in a strongly noisy environment. The effectiveness and advantages of the proposed algorithm are verified by both numerical simulations and real-world cases. Even in a strong noise environment of -10dB, SASST achieve output SNR of 12.66dB and 10.53dB in narrow- and wide-band simulation, respectively. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The emission of optical radiation is associated with electrical discharges in high-voltage power systems. Detecting, measuring, and analyzing this radiation can enable the identification of the type of electrical discharge and the determination of its source. This article presents the results of measurements and analysis of optical spectra in the context of their application for recognizing different forms of electrical discharges in selected insulating liquids. Optical radiation in the ultraviolet, visible light, and near-infrared range, emitted by electrical discharges in insulating liquids commonly used in electrical engineering, such as mineral oil, natural ester, and synthetic ester, was analyzed. As part of the research, an innovative methodology for measuring and analyzing optical radiation emitted by electrical discharges was proposed, utilizing machine learning (ML) tools for precise analysis and interpretation of measurement data. The research results enrich current knowledge with new parameters and measurement indicators, representing another stage in the development of diagnostic methods that can be used to build expert systems and new diagnostic techniques for high-voltage insulation systems. © 1963-2012 IEEE.

We numerically study the chaotic synchronization of microresonator frequency combs. The chaotic state of microresonators could be a key factor in optical communications because the modulation instability state (chaotic) has a larger output than the soliton state (stable), which may enable us to realize a higher signal-to-noise ratio. In addition, it will allow secure communication. We show that two microresonator frequency combs in a leader-follower configuration can be synchronized in chaotic regimes. Interestingly, the follower comb synchronizes even when some longitudinal modes of the leader comb are absent. We also show that the Turing pattern comb in the follower ring becomes chaotic and synchronizes when we inject the leader's modulation instability comb. © 2023 SPIE.
