Chimera states are dynamical states where regions of synchronous trajectories coexist with incoherent ones. A significant amount of research has been devoted to study chimera states in systems of identical oscillators, non-locally coupled through pairwise interactions. Nevertheless, there is an increasing evidence, also supported by available data, that complex systems are composed by multiple units experiencing many-body interactions, that can be modeled by using higher-order structures beyond the paradigm of classic pairwise networks. In this work we investigate whether phase chimera states appear in this framework, by focusing on a novel topology solely involving many-body, non-local and non-regular interactions, hereby named non-local d-hyperring, being (d + 1) the order of the interactions. We present the theory by using the paradigmatic Stuart-Landau oscillators as node dynamics, and show that phase chimera states emerge in a variety of structures and with different coupling functions. For comparison, we show that, when higher-order interactions are"flattened" to pairwise ones, the chimera behavior is weaker and more elusive. © 2023, CC BY.

Quick and reliable real-time detection of the onset of epileptic seizures is a key computational component for the development of high quality closed loop neurostimulators. The objective of this paper is the construction of a low-cost algorithm for real-time statistical analysis of EEG signals of epileptic patients. The mathematical methodology is the theory of self-exiting point processes or Hawkes processes, see Truccolo (2016) or Lambert et al. (2018). The main advance is the development of a computationally feasible recursive maximum likelihood method for fitting a Hawkes process the impulse response function of which is a sum of exponential functions. The viability of the method is proven by strong mathematical heuristics and numerical tests on simulated data, based on a priori analysis of human data recorded during both inter-ictal and ictal epochs.

Consciousness has been historically a heavily debated topic in engineering, science, and philosophy. On the contrary, awareness had less success in raising the interest of scholars in the past. However, things are changing as more and more researchers are getting interested in answering questions concerning what awareness is and how it can be artificially generated. The landscape is rapidly evolving, with multiple voices and interpretations of the concept being conceived and techniques being developed. The goal of this paper is to summarize and discuss the ones among these voices that are connected with projects funded by the EIC Pathfinder Challenge called "Awareness Inside", a nonrecurring call for proposals within Horizon Europe that was designed specifically for fostering research on natural and synthetic awareness. In this perspective, we dedicate special attention to challenges and promises of applying synthetic awareness in robotics, as the development of mature techniques in this new field is expected to have a special impact on generating more capable and trustworthy embodied systems. © 2024, CC BY.

Data-driven leak localization in water distribution networks via dictionary learning and graph-based interpolation

In this paper, we propose a data-driven leak localization method for water distribution networks (WDNs) which combines two complementary approaches: graph-based interpolation and dictionary classification. The former estimates the complete WDN hydraulic state (i.e., hydraulic heads) from real measurements at certain nodes and the network graph. Then, these actual measurements, together with a subset of valuable estimated states, are used to feed and train the dictionary learning scheme. Thus, the meshing of these two methods is explored, showing that its performance is superior to either approach alone, even deriving different mechanisms to increase its resilience to classical problems (e.g., dimensionality, interpolation errors, etc.). The use of automated computer methods when detecting hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) enhances the validity of the surveillance in an effective manner. This is because manual infection control systems used by hospitals are time consuming and are often restricted to intensive care units. This paper proposes a new knowledge-based electronic surveillance system to predict and reduce HAIs. The system can gather patient-associated data from hospital databanks to automatically predict patient injury based on the standard central line-associated bloodstream infection algorithm for HAI detection rules. The application of the proposed electronic system reduces the number of central lines associated with infection of the bloodstream and reduces the length of stay for patient treatment and thus reduces costs. The proposed system has several advantages: (a) It is a web-based system that collects actual data from patients from several IT sources, which will help collect patient data safely and quickly, thereby predicting HAIs effectively. (b) It has an integrated simulator to generate patient records, providing the ability to train medical personnel and nurses to enhance their skills. (c) It is a multimedia-based system to improve patient health reporting. (d) It assists policymakers in reviewing and approving control plans and policies to reduce and prevent hospital injuries. (e) The investigational results of the system showed an enhancement value equal to 87%. © 2019 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd

Photovoltaic systems (PV) are exposed to various weather conditions during the day and getting the maximum power of a PV system is one of its major challenges. While the conventional methods take time to track the maximum power accompanying the fluctuation around the maximum power. Consequently, several metaheuristic algorithms have been presented to overcome the fluctuating around the maximum power. On the other hand optimization methods will search into entire the PV curve to extract the maximum power. This leads to unnecessary search points during the uniform shading conditions which decrease the convergence speed towards the maximum power. In overcoming the tracking time issues as well as the capacity to distinguish between uniform and partial shading conditions, a quick and efficient tracking technique connected to the grid system was presented in this paper. The proposed system, has been tested using MATLAB/SIMULINK, which includes a boost converter to track the maximum power with a sampling time of 0.05 seconds, While a voltage source converter (VSC) is used to transfer the power generated by solar panels to the grid. The simulation results demonstrated that the proposed method was successfully implemented, with an average tracking time of 0.412 s for different weather conditions. Moreover, the comparison with the conventional method of perturb and observe (P& O) has been presented to evaluate the proposed method’s efficiency.

Motivated by the inadequacy of conventional control methods for power networks with a large share of renewable generation, in this paper we study the (stochastic) passivity property of wind turbines based on the Doubly Fed Induction Generator (DFIG). Differently from the majority of the results in the literature, where renewable generation is ignored or assumed to be constant, we model wind power generation as a stochastic process, where wind speed is described by a class of stochastic differential equations. Then, we design a distributed control scheme that achieves load frequency control and economic dispatch, ensuring the stochastic stability of the controlled network. © 2021, CC BY.

Performance evaluation for ranking-based discretisation

Discretisation often constitutes a part of initial data preparation stage. It translates continuous domain of features into granular, by assigning a number of intervals to represent attributes’ values by nominal categories. Typically all real-valued features are subjected to transformations, regardless of their characteristics. The paper presents research on discretisation executed with a discerning approach. To all available attributes, feature selection mechanisms were employed, in the form of rankings that order variables based on their importance. Exploiting this discovered knowledge on attributes, discretisation was then driven by a ranking, and either highest or lowest ranking features were selected for transformation. The influence of selective discretisation on the performance of classification systems was studied for three popular inducers. The procedure was employed in the field of stylometry, and a task of authorship recognition, considered as a binary classification with balanced classes. The experiments show that discretisation based on importance of features can lead to better performance than in the case of transformations applied to all attributes.

This paper summarizes the technical activities of a three-year-long IEEE Task Force (TF) on State Estimation (SE) for Integrated Energy systems (IES). It presents the formal definition and characteristics of IES, along with the comprehensive discussion on Electric Power systems (EPS) model, and static and dynamic models associated with heating and natural gas systems. The paper also identifies the barriers of SE for IES, such as estimation modeling, observability analysis, and measurement requirements, together with addressing multi-scale dynamics. An extensive comparative analysis between Integrated Energy systems-State Estimation (IES-SE) and more established Electric Power System-State Estimation (EPS-SE) is presented. The paper also provides future research needs and directions related to IES-SE. © 1969-2012 IEEE.
