Automatic assessment of oral reading fluency — either for completely autonomous operation or as a facilitator for human decision making — is a likely requirement for timely interventions regarding educational policies for Literacy, especially at the initial years of formal Education. Countries with huge populations such as Brazil have a more urgent demand for such automated procedures, considering the scale of the evaluation needs and the disproportional lack of specialized personnel, compared to more advanced countries. Nevertheless, computational methods as educational aids for Literacy evaluation have been developed mainly for English and other languages associated with those high income countries. Therefore there is an obvious need for studies on languages and countries (especially those with large educational populations) that are less developed. We report on a computational model for fluency assessment based on an automatic speech recognizer (ASR) readily available in the software literature, trained via a deep learning model on a publicly available dataset for Brazilian Portuguese. The model was previously trained for ASR purposes, and therefore was not designed for Literacy assessment of children, this aspect was dealt with through a series of pre and post-processing of the audio samples. Extensive comparative results on reading oral fluency for standardized assessment texts considering the proposed automated process compared to a benchmark by human expert annotations showed a high matching for measures on word and word error rates, despite the fact that the learning model did not include samples from the target population. © 2023, The Authors. Learning dynamical systems using local stability priors

A coupled computational approach to simultaneously learn a vector field and the region of attraction of an equilibrium point from generated trajectories of the system is proposed. The nonlinear identification leverages the local stability information as a prior on the system, effectively endowing the estimate with this important structural property. In addition, the knowledge of the region of attraction plays an experiment design role by informing the selection of initial conditions from which trajectories are generated and by enabling the use of a Lyapunov function of the system as a regularization term. Numerical results show that the proposed method allows efficient sampling and provides an accurate estimate of the dynamics in an inner approximation of its region of attraction. In this paper, we introduce a notion of so-called finite-step simulation functions for discrete-time control systems. In contrast to the existing notions of simulation functions, a finite-step simulation function does not need decay at each time step but after some finite numbers of steps. We show that the existence of such a function guarantees that the mismatch between output trajectories of the concrete and abstract systems lies within an appropriate bound. Using this relaxation, we develop a new type of small-gain conditions which are less conservative than those previously used for compositional construction of approximate abstractions of interconnected control systems. In particular, using finite-step simulation functions, it is possible to construct approximate abstractions, where stabilizability of each subsystem is not necessarily required. The effectiveness of our results is verified by an illustrative example.

Modal regression based structured low-rank matrix recovery for multi-view learning

Low-rank Multi-view Subspace Learning (LMvSL) has shown great potential in cross-view classification in recent years. Despite their empirical success, existing LMvSL based methods are incapable of well handling view discrepancy and discriminancy simultaneously, which thus leads to the performance degradation when there is a large discrepancy among multi-view data. To circumvent this drawback, motivated by the block-diagonal representation learning, we propose Structured Low-rank Matrix Recovery (SLMR), a unique method of effectively removing view discrepancy and improving discriminancy through the recovery of structured low-rank matrix. Furthermore, recent low-rank modeling provides a satisfactory solution to address data contaminated by predefined assumptions of noise distribution, such as Gaussian or Laplacian distribution. However, these models are not practical since complicated noise in practice may violate those assumptions and the distribution is generally unknown in advance. To alleviate such limitation, modal regression is elegantly incorporated into the framework of SLMR (term it MR-SLMR). Different from previous LMvSL based methods, our MR-SLMR can handle any zero-mode noise variable that contains a wide range of noise, such as Gaussian noise, random noise and outliers. The alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) framework and half-quadratic theory are used to efficiently optimize MR-SLMR. Experimental results on four public databases demonstrate the superiority of MR-SLMR and its robustness to complicated noise. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Accurately diagnosing sleep disorders is essential for clinical assessments and treatments. Polysomnography (PSG) has long been used for detection of various sleep disorders. In this research, electrocardiography (ECG) and electromayography (EMG) have been used for recognition of breathing and movement-related sleep disorders. Bio-signal processing has been performed by extracting EMG features exploiting entropy and statistical moments, in addition to developing an iterative pulse peak detection algorithm using synchrosqueezed wavelet transform (SSWT) for reliable extraction of heart rate and breathing-related features from ECG. A deep learning framework has been designed to incorporate EMG and ECG features. The framework has been used to classify four groups: healthy subjects, patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), patients with restless leg syndrome (RLS) and patients with both OSA and RLS. The proposed deep learning framework produced a mean accuracy of 72% and weighted F1 score of 0.57 across subjects for our formulated four-class problem. © 2021, CC BY-NC-ND.

The problem of the rapid creation of effective web applications of one class using formal means is considered. A conceptual approach to its solution is offered based on an analysis of the peculiarities of the construction of web applications. Our approach is based on defining the standard web application architecture and selecting its components using formal methods in accordance with user requirements. A formal logical system is proposed that uses the design of web applications as a process of outputting a formula specified according to the needs of the user, which defines the schemes of execution of the modules of the system. An important feature of this approach is the ability to visualise the process of designing the system in 3D, which creates the conditions for effective interaction between developers and machine development tools.

Optimization underpins many of the challenges that science and technology face on a daily basis. Recent years have witnessed a major shift from traditional optimization paradigms grounded on batch algorithms for medium-scale problems to challenging dynamic, time-varying, and even huge-size settings. This is driven by technological transformations that converted infrastructural and social platforms into complex and dynamic networked systems with even pervasive sensing and computing capabilities. The present paper reviews a broad class of state-of-the-art algorithms for time-varying optimization, with an eye to both algorithmic development and performance analysis. It offers a comprehensive overview of available tools and methods, and unveils open challenges in application domains of broad interest. The real-world examples presented include smart power systems, robotics, machine learning, and data analytics, highlighting domain-specific issues and solutions. Hierarchic Stabilization of Flying Convex-Path-Following Formations Part II: Underactuated Agents

In this paper the flying convex-path-following formations problem (FCxPFF) is solved for two cases of underactuated rigid bodies. In the first case the the rigid bodies have a single degree of underactuation with two thrusts and three torques. In the second, they have two degrees of underactuation with a single thrust. The solution builds on the one developed for fully-actuated agents in Part I of the paper. In addition, the way the solution is tailored for underactuation relies on further utilization of hierarchic set stabilization, and reduction. Additional remarks on the benefits of the approach, and simulation results of the proposed solutions are presented.
