Pneumothorax is a life-threatening and urgent chest disease than can be detected using Chest X-Ray (CXR) image. CXR images are low resolution and diagnosis of pneumothorax based on them is error prone. Deep learning-based computer aided diagnosis systems can improve diagnosis performance of pneumothorax. Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) are default networks in deep learning-based medical image process. However, CNNs fail to capture long range features. On the other side, Transformer are proposed to exploit long range feature, but they cannot capture local features. In this paper, we propose a general method with a convolution and a transformer module which can classify CXR images to diagnose pneumothorax by extracting local features, global features and global features attended by local ones using a novel architecture. Results show that the proposed method outperforms base architectures and the other previous works. © 2023 IEEE.

In today's society, there has been an increase in the number of accidents among the elderly (60 and over) in places such as health clubs, where the main cause of accidents is due to the loss of balance on treadmills. However, traditional solutions are inefficient while consuming human resources and lagging in their inability to predict effectively and prevent upcoming accidents. A user-friendly system that can detect the movement status of the elderly in real-time and predict and alarm the fall risk is needed. Therefore, to protect the safety of the elderly when using the treadmill, in this paper we design a set of elderly exercise experiments at an elderly welfare center in Japan and propose a multi-modal fusion and 1D-CNN based elderly fall risk prediction system to integrate the short-term (e.g., skeletal features and plantar pressures in five minutes) and long-term (e.g., heart rate and sleep quality for three months) data. Finally, we have shown and discussed an application scenario with the simulation of our proposed system. The system will optimize the elderly users' exercise experience when exercising on a treadmill, reduce the risk of falls, and provide guidance for the design of future fitness equipment for the elderly. © 2024 IEEE.

Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) offers low-latency and high-bandwidth support for Internet-of-Vehicles (IoV) applications. However, due to high vehicle mobility and finite communication coverage of base stations, it is hard to maintain uninterrupted and high-quality services without proper service migration among MEC servers. Existing solutions commonly rely on prior knowledge and rarely consider efficient resource allocation during the service migration process, making it hard to reach optimal performance in dynamic IoV environments. To address these important challenges, we propose SR-CL, a novel mobility-aware seamless Service migration and Resource allocation framework via Convex-optimization-enabled deep reinforcement Learning in multi-edge IoV systems. First, we decouple the Mixed Integer Nonlinear Programming (MINLP) problem of service migration and resource allocation into two sub-problems. Next, we design a new actor-critic-based asynchronous-update deep reinforcement learning method to handle service migration, where the delayed-update actor makes migration decisions and the one-step-update critic evaluates the decisions to guide the policy update. Notably, we theoretically derive the optimal resource allocation with convex optimization for each MEC server, thereby further improving system performance. Using the real-world datasets of vehicle trajectories and testbed, extensive experiments are conducted to verify the effectiveness of the proposed SR-CL. Compared to benchmark methods, the SR-CL achieves superior convergence and delay performance under various scenarios. © 2025 IEEE.

This paper presents HPC-in-Containers, a novel containerized parallel computing environment using Docker. It is designed to facilitate learning parallel programming concepts, where users do not have to deploy a multicomputer infrastructure. Instead, they can use their desktop and laptop to easily have a multicomputer environment by utilizing containerization on the multi-core CPU. The environment offers a comprehensive platform for exploring various parallel programming paradigms, including distributed memory parallelism, shared memory parallelism, and hybrid approaches. We include source code samples for each paradigm to demonstrate its capabilities: parallel multicomputer implementations using MPI, parallel thread implementations for single computers using OpenMP, and hybrid parallelization techniques combining both MPI and OpenMP. Furthermore, to enhance user interaction and ease of use, the Docker image incorporates a Jupyter Notebook interface with a C interpreter, allowing users to write, execute, and visualize parallel code through a web browser. This feature makes HPC-in-Containers particularly suitable for educational settings, enabling students to experiment with parallel programming concepts in a controlled, reproducible environment. Our work contributes to the field of parallel computing education by providing a flexible, scalable, and easily deployable platform that bridges the gap between theoretical concepts and practical implementation. It offers a valuable resource for educators, students, and researchers seeking to explore and master the intricacies of parallel programming in a containerized setting. © 2024 IEEE.

We present a third version of the PraK system designed around an effective text-image and image-image search model. The system integrates sub-image search options for localized context search for CLIP and image color/texture and interfaces tailored to specific task types. A user study shows the benefits of sub-image search in homogeneous video collections. As cloud native technology advances, the scale and complexity of applications built on microservice architecture continue to expand, leading to increasingly intricate differences between software within the same application. Microservice applications, offering high flexibility, are deployed in data centers as black boxes from the users' perspective, leaving them with no insight into the orchestration of cloud service providers. Consequently, users face challenges in promptly recognizing performance imbalances within their deployed applications. Meanwhile, cloud service providers may cut costs by offering a mix of qualified and unqualified services, potentially deceiving users. To enhance the understanding of microservice application organization, we propose a non-intrusive measurement framework, termed NMPI. NMPI facilitates rapid identification of microservice application defects, offering insights into cloud services and detecting fraudulent behavior in microservice-based applications. We model microservice applications using a queue analysis-based approach and filter the dominant frequency components of average response time signals by employing k-means on the fast fourier transform (FFT). Our model constructs a library of performance portraits for various software, with these portraits resembling human fingerprints that carry and mark the software's internal information. Utilizing a two-tier microservices-based application incorporating a database as a case study allows us to demonstrate the effectiveness of NMPI. Our experimental results show that NMPI can produce differentiable profiles of data service performance portraits across a diverse and extensive range of workloads, enabling the identification of software types and the analysis of performance conditions. © 2023 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Research on search engines has demonstrated their significant impact on information search and user behavior and highlighted the need for continued investigation of their effectiveness, efficiency, and ethical implications. Moreover, search engine optimization (SEO) has emerged as a crucial aspect of online content creation and marketing, as it involves optimizing websites and online materials to improve their visibility and ranking on search engine results pages, thereby increasing their reach and impact. SEO metrics provide valuable insight into a website's search engine performance. However, the relative importance of these metrics remains unclear as search engine algorithms and keyword competitiveness can vary widely. Therefore, ongoing research is needed to better understand the relationship between SEO metrics and search engine rankings. Given the challenge of determining the relative importance of SEO metrics using traditional statistical methods, interested in applying machine learning techniques. By training models with custom datasets of three search engine results (Google, Bing, and DuckDuckGo) and their associated SEO metrics, we hope to gain a better understanding of the complex relationships between these variables. The first two pages of each search engine return the most relevant results. In this article, we propose two types of methods to do this. First, classify the page index of web search results. Second, learning ranking methods to rank them. LambdaRank has the best NDCG compared to other methods for Google and DuckDuckGo which are 0.86 and 0.93 respectively. RankNet is the best learning-to-rank method for Bing with 0.85 as the NDCG value. Logistic regression has the highest accuracy compared to other methods in page index classification for Bing and Google, which are 61.29% and 64.71%, respectively. K-nearest neighbor performs best for DuckDuckGo with an accuracy of 66.67%. © 2023 IEEE.

Image segmentation is a prerequisite to almost all computer vision applications. It enables the extraction of meaningful information from visual inputs by partitioning images into segments with shared features. This review paper begins by outlining different image segmentation tasks. It then surveys a broad spectrum of segmentation techniques, ranging from classical frameworks to deep-learning (DL) architectures. We perform this through a systematic literature analysis across a handful of applications as part of our methodology. A key contribution of our survey is that it elaborates on a few situations where classical approaches outperform DL-based methods in accuracy, along with the added advantage of computational efficiency. In some cases, these findings also provoke interest in revisiting classical methods, prompting strategies that leverage the strengths of both paradigms. © 2024 IEEE.

Hepatitis C is the liver's festering that can lead to severe liver damage, usually caused by the hepatitis C virus. Hepatitis C has different stages. It is tough to cure in it's last stages;at the same time, it is expensive and painful process. The current research, however, is an alternative precaution to this issue. Hepatitis C can be predicted early by using multiple factors. The dataset related to hepatitis C was not publicly available. To overcome this challenge, the healthy and HCV effected samples were collected from different hospitals in Punjab. A questionnaire based survey was taken including different HCV related factor i.e. gender, weight loss, hives/ rashes, swelling, jaundice, drug addiction history, hepatic encephalopa-thy (drowsiness, slurred speech), Ascites (fluid buildup in belly/ abdomen), spider angiomas (Spiderlike blood vessels), shared syringe usage, medical history, and severeness. Different cleaning, scaling, and feature selection techniques were applied to collect the best feature data. After selection, various machine learning algorithms were applied. Random forest, KNN, Decision Tree, SVC, and MLP were used, but MLP yielded optimal results in all classification algorithms. We have gained 95.9 % accuracy when tested on unknown data based on the MLP model. As the predictions' results were satisfactory, it would be helpful for the people and act as a critical awareness. © 2023 IEEE.

The esports industry is one of the prominent business sectors in the digital era, particularly, Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) games which gain much attention from gamers and streaming audiences. Among such games, Defense of the Ancient 2 or Dota 2 is the record holder for the highest prize esports tournament. Therefore, various companies and investors start their esports teams to compete in the Dota 2 tournaments, the Internationals. To success in the competition, player recruitment is a crucial process as it usually takes considerable effort to find a skillful player. Watching the game replay to evaluate the player’s skill is one of the approaches. However, it can be too exhaustive, also some player’s ranking, which represent the player’s skill, are often not available. In this paper, we propose an effective machine learning pipeline to evaluate the player’s skill. Our designed pipeline includes data collection, feature engineering, and machine learning modeling. We show the data collection process using open-source API. An effective method for feature engineering is proposed. Features, e.g., end-game, or tactical decision related statistics, are incorporated along with the resource in the game distribution, harassment tactic, or spatiotemporal features, in order to provide effective models. Subsequently, we apply major machine learning models based on a single game data, i.e., logistic regression and random forest, to the processed data. The most effective model can achieve up to 0.7091 precision, 0.5850 recall, 0.6411 F1-score, and 0.8123 ROC AUC score. © The Author(s) 2024.
