A lot of current crime cases have been reported to involve pistols, among other firearms. The whole firing pin impression image on a cartridge case is one of the most substantial clues for firearms identification. In this study, a total of 16 features of geometric moments up to the sixth order were extracted from the entire firing pin impression images. All five pistols of the Parabellum Vector SPI 9mm model, manufactured in South Africa were used. The pistols were marked Pistol A, Pistol B, Pistol C, Pistol D, and Pistol E. A total of 747 bullets have been launched from the five pistols. Under an initial analysis, Pearson correlation coefficients between all pairs of features have demonstrated that the features were significant and that the features were inter-related. These problematic featureswere solved by dividing the features into subgroups of variables based on the same characteristics under the principle component analysis. The features that are highly correlated were brought together into meaningful components or factors. Discriminant analysis was applied for the identification of the types of pistols used based on the factors obtained. Classification results using cross-validation under the discriminant analysis pointed that 65.7% of the images were rightly classified according to the pistols used.

Stochastic simulation techniques employed for the analysis of portfolios of insurance/reinsurance risk, often referred to as `Aggregate Risk Analysis', can benefit from exploiting state-of-the-art high-performance computing platforms. In this paper, parallel methods to speed-up aggregate risk analysis for supporting real-time pricing are explored. An algorithm for analysing aggregate risk is proposed and implemented for multi-core CPUs and for many-core GPUs. Experimental studies indicate that GPUs offer a feasible alternative solution over traditional high-performance computing systems. A simulation of 1,000,000 trials with 1,000 catastrophic events per trial on a typical exposure set and contract structure is performed in less than 5 seconds on a multiple GPU platform. The key result is that the multiple GPU implementation can be used in real-time pricing scenarios as it is approximately 77x times faster than the sequential counterpart implemented on a CPU.

A proton-proton collision data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb−1 collected by LHCb at s=7 and 8 TeV, is used to reconstruct 63±9 Ωb−→Ωc0π−, Ωc0→pK−K−π+ decays. Using the Ξb−→Ξc0π−, Ξc0→pK−K−π+ decay mode for calibration, the lifetime ratio and the absolute lifetime of the Ωb− baryon are measured to be τΩb−/τΞb−=1.11±0.16±0.03, τΩb−=1.78±0.26±0.05±0.06 ps, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic and from the calibration mode (for τΩb− only). A measurement is also made of the mass difference, mΩb−−mΞb−, and the corresponding Ωb− mass, which yields mΩb−−mΞb−=247.4±3.2±0.5 MeV/c2, mΩb−=6045.1±3.2±0.5±0.6 MeV/c2. These results are consistent with previous measurements.

The first study is presented of CP violation with an amplitude analysis of the Dalitz plot of B0→DK+π− decays, with D→K+π−, K+K−, and π+π−. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to 3.0 fb−1 of pp collisions collected with the LHCb detector. No significant CP violation effect is seen, and constraints are placed on the angle γ of the unitarity triangle formed from elements of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa quark mixing matrix. Hadronic parameters associated with the B0→DK*(892)0 decay are determined for the first time. These measurements can be used to improve the sensitivity to γ of existing and future studies of the B0→DK*(892)0 decay.

EDITOR'S SUMMARY Since the 1990s massive open online courses (MOOCs) have offered web-based learning on a large scale and with open access. The leading MOOC providers in 2014 – Udemy, Coursera and edX – vary in detail but share the goal of facilitating learning for unlimited audiences at no cost or minimal charge, overcoming socioeconomic hurdles and opening education to all. The potential is strong, and data shows promising registration figures from India and economically developing countries. Yet MOOCs fall short of their goal of widespread and readily accessed education, impeded by technology challenges, lack of basic education and predominance of English as the language of instruction. Maintaining a high standard of educational quality is challenging, and attrition rates are very high. Those in library and information science can facilitate learning through MOOCs and also benefit by using the platform to build awareness of the professional field.

Quality measures are important to evaluate graph clustering algorithms by providing a means to assess the quality of a derived cluster structure. In this paper, we focus on overlapping graph structures, as many real-world networks have a structure of highly overlapping cohesive groups. We propose three methods to adapt existing crisp quality measures such that they can handle graph overlaps correctly, but also ensure that their properties for the evaluation of crisp graph clusterings are preserved when assessing a crisp cluster structure. We demonstrate our methods on such measures as Density, Newman's modularity and Conductance. We also propose an enhancement of an existing modularity measure for networks with overlapping structure. The newly proposed measures are analysed using experiments on artificial graphs that possess overlapping structure. For this evaluation, we apply a graph generation model that creates clustered graphs with overlaps that are similar to real-world networks i.e. their node degree and cluster size distribution follow a power law.

In this chapter we explain the definition of the term (data) exploration. We refine this definition in the context of browsing, navigating and searching. We provide a definition of bisociative exploration and derive requirements on user interfaces, which are designed to support bisociative knowledge discovery. We discuss how to support subtasks of bisociative data exploration with appropriate user interface elements. We also present a set of exploratory tools, which are currently available or in development. Finally, we discuss the problem of usability evaluation in the context of exploratory search. Two main issues - complexity and comparability - are explained and possible solutions proposed. © 2012 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

In the previous chapters of this book quite different approaches to create networks based on existing data collections (Part II) have been discussed and diverse methods for network analysis have been proposed (Part III). All these methods provide powerful means in order to obtain different insights into the properties of huge information networks or graphs. However, one disadavantage of these individual approaches is that each approach provides only specific facets of information to the end user. Integrated exploration tools that enable the interactive exploration of huge graphs and data collections using data viusalization, aggregation and mining methods could be much more beneficial for the (interactive) task of finding bisociations.
