Being largely utilized as alternative sources of energy, photovoltaic (PV) panels are being deployed in many locations. However, those panels are extensively being prone to faults. A careful detection and diagnosis of those faults becomes a must for solar energy engineers, practitioners and decision-makers in order to extract the maximum of energy from them. The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in the domain of solar energy management has become a trend in the few previous years because of the high potential provided by machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) algorithms in handling issues related to PV systems such as control and fault detection and isolation (FDI). In this paper, TinyML models for defect classification of photovoltaic modules based on electroluminescence (EL) images were developed. An open-source platform, Edge Impulse, was used to design and deploy the models. Two convolutional neural network models (mobileNetV1 and mobileNetV2) have been used and compared. A dataset of EL with three anomalies was used to develop the models. The validation test shows an accuracy of 88.44 and 76.38% for respectively MobileNet-V1 and MobileNet-V2. The quantized (Int8) model has been integrated into a microcontroller (Arduino Portenta H7) for real-time application. The obtained results can be considered as promising and can be extended to other case studies with more defects and larger datasets. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Image hiding algorithm based on local binary pattern and compressive sensing

In recent years, with the rapid growth of digital communication, the protection of image privacy has become a critical concern. Traditional image encryption methods may attract attacker attention due to the noise-like appearance of cipher image. To address the theft risk to the private image, a novel three-dimensional chaotic map of Chebyshev coupled Logistic with Sine map (3D-CCLSM) is designed, and then an image hiding algorithm based on local binary pattern (LBP) and compressive sensing (CS) is proposed, named ImHALC. By integrating LBP-based texture feature extraction and CS-based image compression, ImHALC aims to enhance both the security and imperceptibility for steganographic image. Especially, LBP is taken to connect the plain image and keystream, resulting a high security for ImHALC. Firstly, in stage of keystream generation, texture information of the plain image is extracted by using LBP and seen as input of hash function SHA-256, to produce corresponding hash values. Then, these hash values are used to generate the initial value of 3D-CCLSM by a new designed key transformation model (KAM), so as to get the keystream for encryption. Secondly, in stage of image compression, a measurement matrix is constructed by above keystream, and CS is applied to the plain image to get measurements. Thirdly, in stage of image encryption, measurements are confused and diffused to produce a cipher image. Finally, in stage of embedding, an embedding method using integer wavelet transformation (IWT) and 2k correction is presented, so as to embed the secrets (i.e., cipher image) into a given carrier image to obtain hiding performance, i.e., forming a carrier image hiding secrets (CHS). In particular, the ImHALC can achieve the effect of blind extraction. Machine learning algorithms face important implementation difficulties due to imbalanced learning since the Synthetic Minority Oversampling Technique (SMOTE) helps improve performance through the creation of new minority class examples in feature space before preprocessing. The underlying problem leading to performance deterioration emerges from noise and boundary instances found in the minority class rather than an excessive imbalance ratio. Noise and marginal samples become problematic during oversampling operations since they reduce the performance of classification models. This paper proposes an advanced version of Borderline-SMOTE (BL-SMOTE), called ABL-SMOT approach that utilizes INFFC for noise filtering to optimize data quality in the dataset. This improvement method for minority class sample placement and noise filtering ensures higher classifier performance through ABL-SMOTE. The proposed technique receives assessment through the usage of software defect datasets along with multiple testing classifiers against conventional data sampling procedures. The experimental outcomes show that ABL-SMOTE performs better than alternative approaches in most tested datasets because it is an effective preprocessing tool for imbalanced classification problems. © 2013 IEEE.

The transition from 5G to 6G networks will catalyze the development of advanced 6G Applications (6G Apps) with enhanced network programmability and intelligence, providing vertical industries and Communication Service Providers (CSPs) with new opportunities to optimize their operations. This article explores the future of the 6G Apps tailored to verticals in the 6G era, highlighting their role as middleware that abstracts network complexities and exposes Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) to enable dynamic interaction and real-time adaptation. Key enablers such as network exposure, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and edge computing are studied in the context of optimizing operations across verticals, and improving Quality of Service (QoS) and fostering innovation. A case study on teleoperated vehicles exemplifies the real-world applicability of these technological enablers for 6G Apps. Furthermore, this article offers insights and explores new research opportunities for 6G Apps tailored to verticals to evolve in the 6G era while addressing key challenges in deploying these applications in real-world commercial networks as a service. © 1986-2012 IEEE.

This study introduces some novel soliton solutions and other analytic wave solutions for the highly dispersive perturbed nonlinear Schrödinger equation with generalized nonlocal laws and sextic-power law refractive index. This equation models the behavior of complex wave propagation. The improved modified extended tanh function governs the transmission of various solitons with different effects. New optical solitons are constructed as bright solitons, dark solitons, combo bright-dark solitons and singular solitons. Furthermore, exponential solutions, triangular solutions and rational wave solutions are shown. The findings conferred in this article show a crucial advancement in understanding the propagation of waves in non-linear media. The study also includes modulation instability analysis to examine the stability of the derived wave solutions, supplemented by graphical simulations that depict their distinctive features. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

One of the most challenging issues in computer imaging is the automated segmentation of brain tumors using Magnetic Resonance Images (MRI). Several approaches are explored using Deep Neural Networks in image segmentation since they perform well in automated tumor segmentation using tumor scans. Due to the complexity, training deeper neural networks usually takes a long time and many processing resources. An automated approach for classifying and segmenting images of Brain tumor MRI is proposed. As a hybrid transfer learning approach, modified ResNet50 identifies the class of MRI images as Benign or malignant. After identifying the Benign images, the tumor’s location is segmented using a hybrid network involving ResUNet with the Xception network as Backbone. This combination approach is chosen after its comparative analysis with other backbones. Various combination approaches are carried out, and performance metrics like Jaccard, Dice, and Tversky coefficient are done to prove the ResUNet backboned with Xception plays a better role concerning accuracy and speed. The proposed approach was tested on the dataset Cancer Imaging Archive to validate its efficiency. The proposed model has an average dice similarity coefficient score of 0.94, outperforming the conventional transfer learning training method with all the layers. © 2025 IEEE.

While deep learning excels in computer vision tasks with abundant labeled data, its performance diminishes significantly in scenarios with limited labeled samples. To address this, Few-shot learning (FSL) enables models to perform the target tasks with very few labeled examples by leveraging prior knowledge from related tasks. However, traditional FSL assumes that both the related and target tasks come from the same domain, which is a restrictive assumption in many real-world scenarios where domain differences are common. To overcome this limitation, Cross-domain few-shot learning (CDFSL) has gained attention, as it allows source and target data to come from different domains and label spaces. This article presents the first comprehensive review of Cross-domain Few-shot Learning (CDFSL), a field that has received less attention compared to traditional FSL due to its unique challenges. We aim at providing both a position article and a tutorial for researchers, covering key problems, existing methods, and future research directions. The review begins with a formal definition of CDFSL, outlining its core challenges, followed by a systematic analysis of current approaches, organized under a clear taxonomy. Finally, we discuss promising future directions in terms of problem setups, applications, and theoretical advancements. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

A decision support system (DSS) is a computer-based tool used to improve decision-making capabilities for any organization by analyzing the available data. The heart-kidney (HK) model proposed in this paper, as a DSS, simulates the physiological processes of the heart and kidneys in the human body to support cancer detection. The first part of the HK algorithm is inspired by the functions of the heart, where blood molecules (solutions) are sent to the heart, simulating the processes of oxygenation and the pumping of oxygenated blood to the kidneys as a local search. The solutions generated by the heart are then fed into the kidney-inspired algorithm (KA), which performs filtration, reabsorption, secretion, and excretion. The heart component enhances the KA’s local search capability, guiding the algorithm toward optimal solutions. The HK model is evaluated on eight test functions, with results compared to those of the heart algorithm and KA alone. Additionally, the HK algorithm’s effectiveness as a decision support system is tested on benchmark classification and time series prediction problems, with statistical analysis against existing methods in the literature. Finally, the HK algorithm is applied to cancer detection from microRNA data, demonstrating its potential in optimizing decision-making processes in healthcare. © 2013 IEEE.
