Decision Models for Selecting Patterns and Strategies in Microservices Systems and their Evaluation by Practitioners

Researchers and practitioners have recently proposed many Microservices Architecture (MSA) patterns and strategies covering various aspects of microservices system life cycle, such as service design and security. However, selecting and implementing these patterns and strategies can entail various challenges for microservices practitioners. To this end, this study proposes decision models for selecting patterns and strategies covering four MSA design areas: application decomposition into microservices, microservices security, microservices communication, and service discovery. We used peer-reviewed and grey literature to identify the patterns, strategies, and quality attributes for creating these decision models. To evaluate the familiarity, understandability, completeness, and usefulness of the decision models, we conducted semi-structured interviews with 24 microservices practitioners from 12 countries across five continents. Our evaluation results show that the practitioners found the decision models as an effective guide to select microservices patterns and strategies. © 2022, CC BY.

Requirements engineering (RE) is an important phase of software engineering. During this phase, an important set of activities are carried out to manage requirements elicitation, verification, prioritization and validation. Dimension and dynamics of software development are changing with the passage of time. Economic growth in different sectors is increasing the demand for software development. This enhancement has introduced the concept of Value Base software (VBS) development. Requirements prioritization is playing a vital role in ordering requirements to support the release planning of the software. A prioritization process is considered as highly complex process and depends on the nature and size of requirements. VBS systems are entirely different from typical software development, and prioritization process for VBS is also very challenging. A need arises from the provision of prioritization techniques to support the technical and business aspects-based prioritization. Existing techniques are not qualified to meet the expectation of the industry for VBS development. Therefore, this research contribution is an effort made, based on an intelligent decision support system for requirements prioritization in the domain of VBS system. Aspects based requirements prioritization is applied to many requirements and results are produced in two clusters. Nowadays, there are billions interconnected devices forming Cyber-Physical Systems, Internet of Things (IoT) and Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) ecosystems. With an increasing number of devices and systems in use, amount and the value of data, the risks of security breaches increase. One of these risks is posed by open data sources, by which are meant databases, which are not properly protected. These poorly protected databases are accessible to external actors, which poses a serious risk to the data holder and the results of data-related activities such as analysis, forecasting, monitoring, decision-making, policy development, and the whole contemporary society. Despite best efforts, various challenges remain in the creation and maintenance processes of digital twins (DTs). One of those primary challenges is the constant, continuous and omnipresent evolution of systems, their user’s needs and their environment, demanding the adaptation of the developed DT systems. DTs are developed for a specific purpose, which generally entails the monitoring, analysis, simulation or optimization of a specific aspect of an actual system, referred to as the actual twin (AT). As such, when the twin system changes, that is either the AT itself changes, or the scope/purpose of a DT is modified, the DTs usually evolve in close synchronicity with the AT. As DTs are software systems, the best practices or methodologies for software evolution can be leveraged. This paper tackles the challenge of maintaining a (set of) DT(s) throughout the evolution of the user’s requirements and priorities and tries to understand how this evolution takes place. In doing so, we provide two contributions: (i) we develop DarTwin, a visual notation form that enables reasoning on a twin system, its purposes, properties and implementation, and (ii) we introduce a set of architectural transformations that describe the evolution of DT systems. The development of these transformations is driven and illustrated by the evolution and transformations of a family home’s DT, whose purpose is expanded, changed and re-prioritized throughout its ongoing lifecycle. The positioning accuracy of various kinds of devices is often calculated by using Wi-Fi fingerprints as a data source of Received Signal Strength (RSS). Through different matching algorithms, these RSS values are related to corresponding positioning coordinates for positioning estimation. In this paper, we compare two well known Machine Learning (ML) structures for calculating positioning accuracy: Recurrent Neural Network-Long Short-Term Memory (RNN-LSTM) and a Decision Tree (DT). Both matching algorithms run through a series of datasets in two parts. In the first part, the datasets contain raw, non-normalized RSS values. In the second part, the RSS values are all normalized to remove noise in the datasets. After extensive testing and simulations, the tests showed that as long as RSS values are first normalized, a Decision Tree offers better average positioning accuracy. © 2020 IEEE.

The integration of terrestrial and satellite wireless communication networks offers a practical solution to enhance network coverage, connectivity, and cost-effectiveness. Moreover, in today’s interconnected world, connectivity’s reliable and widespread availability is increasingly important across various domains. This is especially more crucial for applications like the Internet of Things (IoT), remote sensing, disaster management, and bridging the digital divide. However, allocating the limited network resources efficiently and ensuring seamless handover between satellite and terrestrial networks present significant challenges. Therefore, this study introduces a resource allocation framework for integrated satellite-terrestrial networks to address these challenges. The framework leverages local cache pool deployments and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) to reduce time delays and improve energy efficiency. Our proposed approach utilizes a multi-agent enabled deep deterministic policy gradient algorithm (MADDPG) to optimize user association, cache design, and transmission power control, resulting in enhanced energy efficiency. The approach comprises two phases: User Association and Power Control, where users are treated as agents, and Cache Optimization, where the satellite (Bs) is considered the agent. Through extensive simulations, we demonstrate that our approach surpasses conventional single-agent deep reinforcement learning algorithms in addressing cache design and resource allocation challenges in integrated terrestrial-satellite networks. Specifically, our proposed approach achieves significantly higher energy efficiency and reduced time delays compared to existing methods. This research highlights the importance and addresses the need for efficient resource allocation and cache design in integrated terrestrial-satellite networks, paving the way for enhanced connectivity and improved network performance in various applications. Currently, communication between deaf and hearing people is still facing great problems both at the research level and at the application level. Also, practical automatic sign language interpretation methods have become a relatively large demand. In this paper, we will recognize video sign language based on computer vision to capture skeletal key point information using multi-head attention mechanism and long and short-term memory mechanism. We construct a database of Chinese video sign language consisting of 30 words, with a total data volume of more than 1200. Meanwhile, the experiments of our proposed framework on this dataset achieved 85% accuracy rate. The experimental results show that our proposed method has the characteristics of high accuracy and light weight in the problem of Chinese sign language recognition.

Arbitrary shape text detection in natural scenes is an extremely challenging task. Unlike existing text detection approaches that only perceive texts based on limited feature representations, we propose a novel framework, namely TextFuseNet, to exploit the use of richer features fused for text detection. More specifically, we propose to perceive texts from three levels of feature representations, i.e., character-, word- and global-level, and then introduce a novel text representation fusion technique to help achieve robust arbitrary text detection. The multi-level feature representation can adequately describe texts by dissecting them into individual characters while still maintaining their general semantics. TextFuseNet then collects and merges the texts' features from different levels using a multi-path fusion architecture which can effectively align and fuse different representations. In practice, our proposed TextFuseNet can learn a more adequate description of arbitrary shapes texts, suppressing false positives and producing more accurate detection results. Our proposed framework can also be trained with weak supervision for those datasets that lack character-level annotations. Experiments on several datasets show that the proposed TextFuseNet achieves state-of-the-art performance. Specifically, we achieve an F-measure of 94.3% on ICDAR2013, 92.1% on ICDAR2015, 87.1% on Total-Text and 86.6% on CTW-1500, respectively. © 2020 Inst. Sci. inf., Univ. Defence in Belgrade.
