Automotive simulation can potentially compensate for a lack of training data in computer vision applications. However, there has been little to no image quality evaluation of automotive simulation and the impact of optical degradations on simulation is little explored. In this work, we investigate Virtual KITTI and the impact of applying variations of Gaussian blur on image sharpness. Furthermore, we consider object detection, a common computer vision application on three different state-of-the-art models, thus allowing us to characterize the relationship between object detection and sharpness. It was found that while image sharpness (MTF50) degrades from an average of 0.245cy/px to approximately 0.119cy/px;object detection performance stays largely robust within 0.58%(Faster RCNN), 1.45%(YOLOF) and 1.93%(DETR) across all respective held-out test sets. © 2024, CC BY.

Quantum machine learning (QML) is one of the most promising applications of quantum computation. However, it is still unclear whether quantum advantages exist when the data is of a classical nature and the search for practical, real-world applications of QML remains active. In this work, we apply the well-studied quantum support vector machine (QSVM), a powerful QML model, to a binary classification task which classifies peptides as either hemolytic or non-hemolytic. Using three peptide datasets, we apply and contrast the performance of the QSVM, numerous classical SVMs, and the best published results on the same peptide classification task, out of which the QSVM performs best. The contributions of this work include (i) the first application of the QSVM to this specific peptide classification task, (ii) an explicit demonstration of QSVMs outperforming the best published results attained with classical machine learning models on this classification task and (iii) empirical results showing that the QSVM is capable of outperforming many (and possibly all) classical SVMs on this classification task. This foundational work paves the way to verifiable quantum advantages in the field of computational biology and facilitates safer therapeutic development. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. A Comprehensive Survey of Few-shot Learning: Evolution, Applications, Challenges, and Opportunities

Few-shot learning (FSL) has emerged as an effective learning method and shows great potential. Despite the recent creative works in tackling FSL tasks, learning valid information rapidly from just a few or even zero samples still remains a serious challenge. In this context, we extensively investigated 200+ latest papers on FSL published in the past three years, aiming to present a timely and comprehensive overview of the most recent advances in FSL along with impartial comparisons of strengths and weaknesses of the existing works. For the sake of avoiding conceptual confusion, we first elaborate and compare a set of similar concepts including few-shot learning, transfer learning, and meta-learning. Furthermore, we propose a novel taxonomy to classify the existing work according to the level of abstraction of knowledge in accordance with the challenges of FSL. To enrich this survey, in each subsection we provide in-depth analysis and insightful discussion about recent advances on these topics. Moreover, taking computer vision as an example, we highlight the important application of FSL, covering various research hotspots. Finally, we conclude the survey with unique insights into the technology evolution trends together with potential future research opportunities in the hope of providing guidance to follow-up research. © 2022, CC BY.

Smart mobile devices coupled with the Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) have emerged as a key enabler of modern digital health applications. While cloud computing is now a well established paradigm for analysing IoT captured data in mobile health applications, on-board analysis of data using AI approaches such as Deep Learning (DL) is gaining significant momentum. This is driven primarily by advances in on-board resources enabling modern mobile devices to execute complex DL models, while also offering improved response time and accuracy for rapid decision-making, and enhanced user privacy. While the number of mobile digital health applications that use IoT and DL is increasing, progress is currently impeded by a lack of framework for profiling and evaluating the performance of DL models on mobile devices. To this end, we propose MobDL, a framework for profiling and evaluating DL models running on smart mobile devices. We present the architecture of this framework and devise a novel evaluation methodology for conducting quantitative comparisons of various DL models running on mobile devices. Three diverse digital health applications using heterogeneous data (e.g. image, time series) are introduced. We conduct extensive experimental evaluations using several DL models that have been developed using the data sets obtained for the three digital health applications to validate the effectiveness of the proposed MobDL framework. © 2020 ACM.

Recent advancements in machine learning and deep learning have brought algorithmic fairness into sharp focus, illuminating concerns over discriminatory decision making that negatively impacts certain individuals or groups. These concerns have manifested in legal, ethical, and societal challenges, including the erosion of trust in intelligent systems. In response, this survey delves into the existing literature on algorithmic fairness, specifically highlighting its multifaceted social consequences. We introduce a novel taxonomy based on'tolerance', a term we define as the degree to which variations in fairness outcomes are acceptable, providing a structured approach to understanding the subtleties of fairness within algorithmic decisions. Our systematic review covers diverse industries, revealing critical insights into the balance between algorithmic decision making and social equity. Nowadays, the popularity in using skin care tends to increase and there are also a lot of exchanging opinions on online media, which directly affected to making decision on buying any products for customers. In this research, we want to find additional data for developing opinion analysis and separating emotional opinions about skin care messages. The methodology uses the data mining process, such as opinion mining with sentiment analysis through the machine learning algorithm for identifying the levels of positive and negative emotion in messages. Moreover, the skin care opinion mining application was developed based on the web application to display the results in the form of various representations. Furthermore, the performance of analytical methods is evaluated by the accuracy, precision, and recall rate, which are all more than 75%. Therefore, the automate analysis application can be employed as a helping tool for data analysis for the consumers, who are interested in skin care products, and for the entrepreneurs can know the customers’ attitude of the products. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2019.

Context Agile software development (ASD) aims to deliver high-quality software. However, software quality often gets less attention due to focus on *** an evidence-based quality-aware ASD process that organizations can use to create a more quality-aware development process and improve software *** methodUsing design science research, we collaborated with four organizations applying ASD in different contexts. Involving a total of 35 practitioners, we designed company-specific evidence-based quality-aware ASD processes, which were validated through simulated scenarios, implemented, and evaluated by the practitioners. ResultsA general ASD process model, derived from the company-specific models, was created, which shows the specific activities, frequencies, roles, and development phases where evidence can be used to improve software quality. The new process model contributed towards improved bottleneck identification, release readiness, and quality issues prioritization. We also learned that companies must be mindful of the rules that determine the use of evidence. Conclusion Integrating the use of quality related evidence into the ASD process can make it quality-aware, supporting software quality management, and enabling timely reaction through fast feedback loops. The evidence-based quality-aware ASD process is applicable in any Scrum-like ASD process. Applicability in other forms of ASD, however, requires further research. © 2023, The Authors. Changes in blood sugar levels are significantly affected by dietary carbohydrate intake, which clearly affects insulin therapy. However, currently available insulin pumps do not perform continuous blood glucose monitoring, and the patient should do so. The quality of the treatment can be further improved if the phenomenon of eating can be recognized based on the characteristic movements, and then by sending an automatic signal of the event to the insulin pump, it can be taken into account that an increase in blood sugar levels is expected. In our work, we focused on this task and, using 4 different tools, collected data from more than 8 people on their hand movements during their meals, on which we performed various data manipulations. Finally, using the aggregation of the obtained data set, we tested different machine learning techniques, from which we will select the optimal algorithm that can recognize the motion characteristic of carbohydrate intake independently of the person with the smallest error. The article presents the tools used for the measurement, the operations performed on the data, as well as the tried and tested machine learning methods and their comparative analysis. Our goal is to improve the quality of life of people with diabetes by increasing the effectiveness of base bolus therapy.

AI technology has been used in many clinical research fields, but most AI technologies are difficult to land in real-world clinical settings. In most current clinical AI research settings, the diagnosis task is to identify different types of diseases among the given ones. However, the diagnosis in real-world settings needs dynamically developing inspection strategies based on the existing resources of medical institutions and identifying different kinds of diseases out of many possibilities. To promote the development of different clinical AI technologies and the implementation of clinical applications, we propose a benchmark named Clinical AIBench for developing, verifying, and evaluating clinical AI technologies in real-world clinical settings. Specifically, Clinical AIBench can be used for: (1) Model training and testing: Researchers can use the data to train and test their models. (2)Model evaluation: Researchers can use Clinical AIBench to objectively, fairly, and comparably evaluate various models of different researchers. (3) Clinical value evaluation: Researchers can use the clinical indicators provided by Clinical AIBench to evaluate the clinical value of models, which will be applied in real-world clinical settings. For convenience, Clinical AIBench provides three different levels of clinical settings: restricted clinical setting, which is named closed clinical setting, data island clinical setting, and real-world clinical setting, which is called open clinical setting. In addition, Clinical AIBench covers three diseases: Alzheimer's disease, COVID-19, and dental. Clinical AIBench provides python APIs to researchers.
