In face-to-face conversation, embodied rhythms between speech and body movements such as nodding are mutually synchronized between talkers. This synchrony is called entrainment in communication, and it generates the sharing of embodiment in human interaction. Embodied communication, which is closely related to behavioral and physiological entrainment, is an essential form of communication that forms the basis of interaction between talkers through mutual embodiment. In particular, nodding has an important role as a regulator in embodied interaction and communication. The detection of nodding is useful for an estimation of the activity of conversation. In this paper, we propose a nodding detection model based on the analysis of the head movement involved in nodding and introduce a system that uses this model. In this system, nodding is detected from the rotational movement of a head, which is estimated by face tracking using Active Appearance Model. Furthermore, the effectiveness of the system is demonstrated in comparison with the nodding detection by visual inspection.

In the paper a flow stress model based on internal variables is shortly presented. The multiplicative model contains three parts. In the model, the normalized dislocation density ρm was considered, as a strain function only, independently to the strain rate and the temperature. Influence of varying processing conditions(the strain rate and the temperature) is introduced as a factor. The first one is a model of so called "master" curve. It is an internal variable model based on dislocation density and its output value strongly depends on strain and very weakly on temperature and strain rate. The second factor introduces varying deformation conditions. Changes of flow stress do not occur instantly with the change of deformation conditions, but it requires some strain for transition. The third part considers influence of recrystallization. The results of the model parameters identification and verification in varying deformation conditions are presented in this paper.

In this paper, we propose a novel method for gesture recognition using depth data captured by Microsoft Kinect sensor. Conventionally, the features which have been used for gesture recognition are divided into two parts, hand shape and arm movement. In conventional methods, only two-dimensional hand features are used because human's hand consists of the multiple joint structure. Furthermore, conventional arm movement feature are influenced by environmental changing, such as individual differences in body size, camera position and so on. Therefore, to assist in the recognition, a method of feature extraction is proposed, which involves the hand shape with 3D feature and the arm movement with angle between joints of body. In order to show effectiveness of the proposed method, performance for gesture recognition is compared with conventional methods using Japanese language.

The smart school is a technology-based teachinglearning institution for preparing children for the Information Age. To achieve smarts schools educational objectives, these teaching and learning concepts should be covered: curricular, pedagogy, assessment and teaching-learning materials. Information and communication technology(ICT), as second pillar of smart school, plays many roles in a smart school, from facilitating teaching and learning activities to assisting with school management. For instance, some of technologies which can equip a smart school might be classrooms with multimedia courseware and presentation facilities, computer laboratory for teaching, multimedia development center and server room equipped to handle applications, management databases, and web servers. Although in recent years some efforts have been done for developing smart schools, there is not a pre-defined and an efficient solution for establishing ICT environment for smart schools. The main objective of this research is to examine pertinent aspects of smart school's concept, namely matters pertaining to teacher training, information technology(IT) infrastructure, and curriculum design to ensure that the innovation can successfully nurture a workforce prepared to meet the challenges of the ICT era.

The peer-reviewed articles and textual data are main source of data in biology. Text mining is solution to extract information from textual data sources that are usually in bulky quantities, messy and disorganized. Dealing with this situation needs to deploy innovative methods and techniques. In this paper, we identify the current heavily used methods for biomedical text mining, their capabilities and developments, some proposed solution and how to evaluate performance. Biomedical specific challenges in text mining context have been studied with respect to proposed answers and then main future trends based on current needs and requirements have been discussed. © 2012 IEEE.

Machine learning (ML) methods are used to extract new knowledge from existing datasets. Ensemble methods (EM) were introduced to improve the ML performance. While EM's offer performance improvements, they limit the amount of control and general understanding of how the final result was achieved. We are researching the possibility to verify ML results with formalization of research results accessible in natural language. We propose to use the extracted information from scientific papers for the verification of ML results. In order to be able to extract the information, relevant to the ML results, an approach to extract specific information rich segments from scientific papers is needed. We present an approach to automated selection of relevant segments from large repositories.

This paper provides sufficient conditions for the incremental stability of time-delayed nonlinear systems. It relies on the Razumikhin-Lyapunov approach, which consists in invoking small-gain arguments by treating the delayed state as a feedback perturbation. The results are valid for multiple delays, as well as bounded time-varying delays. We provide conditions under which the limit solution of a time-delayed nonlinear system in response to a periodic (resp. constant) input is itself periodic and of the same period (resp. constant). As an illustration, a specific focus is given on a class of delayed Lur'e systems.

This paper presents the experience gained on semantic web service composition technique applied to the bioinformatics domain. Specifically, the approach presented here consists of knowledge retrieval perspective in biological pathway. Semantic web services, annotated with domain ontology are used to describe services for pathway knowledge retrieval for Kyoto Encyclopedia of Gene and Genomes (KEGG) database. Retrieving knowledge can be seen as high level goals and the tasks involved can be decomposed into subtask to achieve the specified goals. We execute the composition of service by treating composition as planning problem using Hierarchical Task Network (HTN) planning system based on Simple Hierarchical Order Planner 2 (SHOP2). The approach for plan (task) decomposition using SHOP2 is implemented in automated way. We investigate the effectiveness of this approach by applying real world scenario in pathway information retrieval for Lactococcus Lactis (L. lactis) organism where biologists need to find out the pathway description from the given specific gene of interest. © 2012 IEEE.

Let there be given a safety related electronic system suffering from random failures or errors. The standard IEC 61508 contains simplified equations for the probability of failure on demand PFDavg for special system architectures, mostly without proof. In various publications PFDavg is defined by several different equations, e.g. as a Laplacian probability, as an integral mean, or by means of the average failure rate of the system. The aim of the paper is to determine PFDavgby stochastic methods and to bring together the different definitions. A formula for PFDavg is given that is valid for most universal electronic systems. The equivalence of 2 different definitions of PFDavgis shown. The special case of a koon-system is investigated, and the resulting equations improve those known so far. The basic idea is to randomize the time to failure, the down time of the system, as well as the repair time, and then, by means of the Stieltjes-Integral, determine the mean or average time as the expectation of the respective random variable.
