A component-based Embedded Real Time (ERT) system can improve the system development through enhancing the ability of experts in developing sophisticated ERT software. In order to generate codes, ERT code generator system frameworks have generally two parts: a graphical semi-formal-model representation to define the components, and an optimal code generator that generates codes for a resource limited microcontroller. The Unified Modelling Language(UML) semi-formal-model system does not deal with minute details of the code generation (e.g. IF, THEN, ..). Currently, code generators use a state diagram semi-formal-model to provide optimal codes. However, manual coding has not been quit entirely since current state diagrams are not capable of providing details in code generation. The Component Oriented Programming framework (COP) is an ERT framework which targets on the code generation required in Autonomous Mobile Robot (AMR). Currently, the COP framework can not provide the AMR with code details. This paper presents an implementation of a code generator through exploiting a previously used algorithm to create a state diagram based on information taken from the component composition in the COP framework. Consequently, manual coding in the COP framework can be minimized. © 2011 IEEE.

The objective of this study was to discriminate different types of punches based on signals measured by gyro sensors. If a boxer consistently uses the same pattern of attack, his opponent could easily determine what type of punch is coming next. Thus, by feeding back information on the frequency of each type of punch, the attack pattern can be identified and the counterattack can be improved. © 2011 SICE.

The need to measure and evaluate prosthetics practice has received growing recognition in the past several years. Reliable and valid self-report instruments are needed that can help facilities evaluate patient outcomes. Evidence of construct validity is provided by hierarchies of item difficulty that are consistent with clinical experience. A survey with 16 completed survey returned from hospital and rehabilitation centre. The instruments demonstrate adequate internal consistency of mean 4.0 for satisfaction with services, mean 3.81 for satisfaction with devices and 16.67% for defects or drawbacks of devices. Documenting mechanical stability of the prosthesis is inadequate when reporting follow-up studies and a questionnaires assessing patient satisfaction should be added to provide a better picture of the outcome and results. © 2011 IEEE.

A change in measurement of speed or vector of an object or objects in the field of view is called motion. Detection of motion can be achieved by electronic devices or mechanical devices that interact or quantify the changes in the given environment. In this paper, a monitoring system is being enhanced utilizes motion detection technology with modified internationally recognized algorithms, implemented in C sharp and Matlab programming language. The result of this study is expected to be beneficial and able to assist users on effective motion detection and analysis. Four different motion detectors are being compared. The assessment includes three trials in three different speeds of motion and Morph filter has given a better and smooth detection. In conclusion, an effective motion assessment and monitoring system has been developed for the improvement of the motion detection ability. © 2011 IEEE.

XML databases are commonly used for representing data with more complex structures than traditional relational data. Like in any data model, it is very important to ensure that the contents of the database always valid even after any attempt of updates. XML Updates validation is a process of checking the correctness of XML documents, in terms of satisfying their constraints, after updates operations. The validation can be generally categorized into structural and semantic validation. The first validation is to ensure that all XML nodes in the documents conform to structural information in its associated schema. Meanwhile, the second validation checks the integrity constraints of the documents, and it involve various factors such as the functional dependencies, domain constraint, inheritance, etc. In this paper, we provide a preliminary survey of semantic validation w.r.t XML Updates. The work of validation usually applied either upon any attempt of updates or in a scheduled period. We compare the output gain by works in terms of operation of update, the composition, types of constraint, etc. It shows that even though there are abundant of studies in this area, not much work has investigated a complete semantic validation of different semantic constraints. The constraints are still strongly dependent on structural information of documents and lied only on the data access tier of application architecture. © 2011 IEEE.

In digital watermarking performance evaluation at least three major metrics: imperceptibility, robustness and capacity have been widely used by researchers to analyze the performance of watermarking schemes;however, they constantly conflict with each other. In this paper we propose an effective method to evaluate the trade-off balanced degree among these measures using three threshold conditions. These thresholds comprise of three factors: imperceptibility effect 'before attack and after watermarking', perceptibility effect 'after attack', and robustness 'after attack'. As a result of this study, the performance trade-off of a watermarking scheme can be stated based on degrees. Moreover, we proposed Reset Removal Attack as a severe geometric attack. Finally, the experimental investigation of the proposed technique using the bit-plane watermarking algorithms under several intensities of Reset Removal Attack revealed that the 3rd bit-plane algorithm behaved a better compromise among robustness, image quality, and capacity. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.

Over the past decade, scheduling in grid computing system has been an active research. However, it is still difficult to find an optimal scheduling algorithm to achieve load balancing. Most of the researchers have focus on schedule-based algorithms such as genetic algorithm and particle swarm optimization to solve this problem and use priority rules algorithms as initial schedule in those algorithms. The main reason this paper was produced is that most of these researchers failed to justify why they use a specific priority rules scheduler as initial schedule in their work. This paper addresses this issue by presenting a comparison results on several priority rules algorithms based on several performance metrics. To add novelty to this paper, we have proposed several schedule-based algorithms that basically based on the combination of backfilling technique and priority rules algorithms. Our results show the significant improvements compared to the original priority rules algorithms. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.

A model is proposed for selecting the optimal result of contractor selection under multi criteria environment. Fuzzy comparing judgment is used to tackling the vagueness and uncertainty in choosing significant preferences by decision maker regarding to the subjective opinion. Finally, the model was tested in tender evaluation processes for awarding the most beneficial contractor to perform the construction project. © 2011 IEEE.

Learning Object (LO) is one of the main research topics in the e-learning community in the recent years, and most researchers pay attention to the issue of Learning Object Reusability. The most obvious motivation is the economic interest of reusing learning material instead of repeatedly authoring it. In this paper we present the process of creating granular learning object for enabling the reusing of LO in e-Learning context. Reusability requires the LO to be in a fine-grain form because raw media elements are often much easier to reuse then aggregate assemblies. In other words, as the LO size decreases (lower granularity), its potential for reuse increases. A prototype of learning objects repository that contain granular LO has been developed to show the process of granularizing LO. Each of existing LO will be extracted into granular element with the metadata and the system generated unique id for each LO based on its identifier (URL of LO) and save automatically the metadata contain in the LO. These metadata will be used for searching and retrieval process of the granule LO. © 2011 IEEE.

This paper investigates characteristics of periodic structure of ferrite and dielectric slabs in cutoff waveguide which include lefthanded operation. Transmission line model and finite element simulation are used to get dispersion characteristics and scattering parameters. Band pass response of left-handed ferrite mode at negative permeability region are discussed with backward wave phenomenon. Theoretical results show that by choosing appropriate ratio of (1) ferrite width and dielectric width, and (2) ferrite length and dielectric length, band pass response with steep edge characteristics can be obtained by the LH ferrite mode, which are confirmed with experiments using single crystal of yttrium iron garnet ferrite. Good band pass and phase shift responses are observed in S band. Copyright © 2011 The Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers.
