Agricultural systems pose many challenges and problems that can be formulated as optimization problems. Among these major challenges are crop selection and irrigation planning. That is, to decide on the proper set of crops to be cultivated and a proper irrigation scheme. Such decisions are made to achieve a certain objectives that typically include the maximization of net profit and/or the minimization of water waste. The problem is complicated by the existence of conflicting multiple objectives. In addition, water management represents one of the most critical problems that face the national interests in the current and near future, especially in the middle east, where, according to UNESCO, the main interstate conflicts over water occur/will occur in that region. Given that agricultural irrigation water accounts for 80% consumption of the world's water resources, better agricultural systems management can play a critical role in the peaceful resolution of such crisis. This article presents an initial investigation of the recent work published in this field involving the mathematical formulation and the computational methods used to solve the resulting models.

Semiconductor lasers are the integral parts of optical communication systems. The temperature dependence of the lasing wavelength of a laser is an important issue because it is used in different environment with varying thermal conditions. In this paper, a comparative study of the temperature dependence of lasing wavelength of two types of laser diode has been presented. The comparison was made between an InGaAsP/InP stripe geometry edge-emitting laser and vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) with GaAs in the active region. For both cases, the temperature dependence was observed for different heat sink temperatures ranging from 20°C to 50°C at an interval of 5°C for an operating current of 0.763A and 1.88mA respectively. The lasing wavelength shifts for stripe laser and VCSEL have been found to be 0.3nm/K and 0.06nm/K respectively. VCSEL exhibits significantly greater thermal stability than stripe laser. The paper is concerned with data transmission via channels composed of a memoryless binary symmetric channel and the erasure channel of Peter Elias. Channels of this type play an important role in modelling different types of networks especially wireless networks, and have been investigated using, amongst others, the theory of Markov chains. Channel Capacities and network flows have been determined. The authors focus their interest on some aspects of coding theory. They assume the data transmission to be protected by a linear code, a CRC for example, and determine the probability of undetected error of the code. They then consider redundant transmission via two or more channels with bit inversion, and calculate the probability of undetected error. They prove some inequalities that are useful instruments to estimate the rate of transmission errors and to determine safety integrity levels according to the standards. Finally the authors apply their results to Bluetooth channels suffering from different types of noise.

The paper presents a method for monitoring heartbeats based on time-frequency analysis of optic interferometric signal by using smoothed pseudo Wigner-Ville distribution. Optical interferometer is a sensitive device that detects physical changes of the length of optical fibre. When put in mattress, heartbeats of a subject lying on the fibre causes its perturbation. This allows entirely unobtrusive and continuous monitoring of subject's heart rate by processing interferometric signal. Reference ECG signals were acquired in order to verify recognition rate and accuracy of proposed method. An experiment with 6 subjects was performed. Interferometric and referential signals were acquired simultaneously for about 60 s. The obtained results show high recognition rate (about 97% with persons breathing and 98% with persons holding their breath).
