Assessing of Physiological Arousal and Cognitive Anxiety toward Academic Performance: The Application of Catastrophe Model

The Catastrophe model in which the theory attempts to explain the interaction of physiological arousal cognitive anxiety affect on sport's performance. The model is important to understand the influence of anxiety upon performance. This research proposes a model to understand the effect of anxiety upon academic performance. The research consists with finding on the Catastrophe model of anxiety upon sport's performance. A total 135 students were participated in this study conducted during 2 nd semester. The physiological arousal was measured using heart rate sensor and respiration sensor. Meanwhile, cognitive anxiety was measure using State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and Study Anxiety Scale (SAS). Furthermore, Grade Point Average (GPA) is employed to predict students’ academic performance. For assessment, the Pearson correlation was used to assess the physiological arousal and cognitive anxiety toward academic performance. The finding shows that high level of physiological arousal and cognitive anxiety is a significant factor that creates low academic performance. Based on the finding, it is concluded that the model can be use to comprehend of relationship between anxiety toward academic performance.

A human-robot system in which a mobile robot follows the movement of the laser spot projected on the floor by the laser pointer attached at the human head is considered. Human gives instruction of desired movement to the robot by rotating his or her head. Robot can realize intended movement by following the movement of the laser spot on the floor. Kansei controller is introduced between the instruction movement of the laser spot and following motion of the robot to realize psychologically acceptable motion of the robot. In addition, three modes, stopping mode, following mode, and parameter adjustment mode for the Kansei controller, are considered. The effectiveness of the proposed system was discussed experimentally, and confirmed by the smooth trajectory of the following motion of the mobile robot and good psychological evaluations.

Nowadays, almost all the enterprises in the world fall in Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs) category even though SMEs has different definitions in different countries. At the same time, there is no exemplar standard and/or framework for information technology (IT) governance for SMEs. This paper presents the main issues in implementing IT governance in SMEs. Firstly, it explains the definition of SMEs and their characteristics, secondly it discusses IT governance definition and its framework. Finally, some issues and approaches for ITG implementation in SMEs are described, and end with conclusion and future work. © 2011 IEEE.

Iterative process to improve simple adaptive subdivision surfaces method with butterfly scheme

Subdivision surfaces were applied to the entire meshes in order to produce smooth surfaces refinement from coarse mesh. Several schemes had been introduced in this area to provide a set of rules to converge smooth surfaces. However, to compute and render all the vertices are really inconvenient in terms of memory consumption and runtime during the subdivision process. It will lead to a heavy computational load especially at a higher level of subdivision. Adaptive subdivision is a method that subdivides only at certain areas of the meshes while the rest were maintained less polygons. Although adaptive subdivision occurs at the selected areas, the quality of produced surfaces which is their smoothness can be preserved similar as well as regular subdivision. Nevertheless, adaptive subdivision process burdened from two causes;calculations need to be done to define areas that are required to be subdivided and to remove cracks created from the subdivision depth difference between the selected and unselected areas. Unfortunately, the result of adaptive subdivision when it reaches to the higher level of subdivision, it still brings the problem with memory consumption. This research brings to iterative process of adaptive subdivision to improve the previous adaptive method that will reduce memory consumption applied on triangular mesh. The result of this iterative process was acceptable better in memory and appearance in order to produce fewer polygons while it preserves smooth surfaces.

A change in measurement of speed or vector of an object or objects in the field of view is called motion. Detection of motion can be achieved by electronic devices or mechanical devices that interact or quantify the changes in the given environment. In this paper, a monitoring system is being enhanced utilizes motion detection technology with modified internationally recognized algorithms, implemented in C sharp and Matlab programming language. The result of this study is expected to be beneficial and able to assist users on effective motion detection and analysis. Four different motion detectors are being compared. The assessment includes three trials in three different speeds of motion and Morph filter has given a better and smooth detection. In conclusion, an effective motion assessment and monitoring system has been developed for the improvement of the motion detection ability.

The need to measure and evaluate prosthetics practice has received growing recognition in the past several years. Reliable and valid self-report instruments are needed that can help facilities evaluate patient outcomes. Evidence of construct validity is provided by hierarchies of item difficulty that are consistent with clinical experience. A survey with 16 completed survey returned from hospital and rehabilitation centre. The instruments demonstrate adequate internal consistency of mean 4.0 for satisfaction with services, mean 3.81 for satisfaction with devices and 16.67% for defects or drawbacks of devices. Documenting mechanical stability of the prosthesis is inadequate when reporting follow-up studies and a questionnaires assessing patient satisfaction should be added to provide a better picture of the outcome and results.

Electric and hybrid electric vehicles (EV/HEV) have the advantage of being more environmentally friendly and quieter than internal combustion engine vehicles. However, reduced noise can also lead to potentially dangerous situations for pedestrians when an oncoming vehicle is inaudible due to background noise (e.g. Kerber and Fastl, internoise 2007). The installation of devices that produce warning sounds in vehicles to alert pedestrians is being considered in various countries. Because this is a global topic, it is of vital interest to determine whether there exist cross-cultural differences. Pilot studies on this topic were performed in Japan (Yamauchi et al., internoise 2010) and, with improved input devices and test procedure, in Germany (Menzel et al., DAGA 2011). The level of three possible warning sounds (engine noise, car horn, and band-pass noise) were adjusted in presence of four different urban background sounds (busy street, residential area, heavy traffic, and shopping area) in laboratory environments. In the first part of the experiments, subjects were asked to adjust the level of the warning sounds so that they were clearly audible and could be reliably detected in the background noise. In the second part the goal was to adjust the level so that the warning sounds were just audible. The results of the adjustments showed no significant difference between the two subjects groups. The results were discussed in view of inter-individual and intraindividual differences. Moreover, the results were compared to current recommendations for sound levels of warning sounds in quiet vehicles.

XML databases are commonly used for representing data with more complex structures than traditional relational data. Like in any data model, it is very important to ensure that the contents of the database always valid even after any attempt of updates. XML Updates validation is a process of checking the correctness of XML documents, in terms of satisfying their constraints, after updates operations. The validation can be generally categorized into structural and semantic validation. The first validation is to ensure that all XML nodes in the documents conform to structural information in its associated schema. Meanwhile, the second validation checks the integrity constraints of the documents, and it involve various factors such as the functional dependencies, domain constraint, inheritance, etc. In this paper, we provide a preliminary survey of semantic validation w.r.t XML Updates. The work of validation usually applied either upon any attempt of updates or in a scheduled period. We compare the output gain by works in terms of operation of update, the composition, types of constraint, etc. It shows that even though there are abundant of studies in this area, not much work has investigated a complete semantic validation of different semantic constraints. The constraints are still strongly dependent on structural information of documents and lied only on the data access tier of application architecture.

Trajectory Tracking Control of Pendulum with Variable Length by Partial Energy Shaping * *

Abstract This paper concerns a trajectory tracking control problem for a pendulum with variable length, which is an underactuated mechanical system of two degrees-of-freedom with a single input of adjusting the length of the pendulum. We aim to study whether it is possible to design a time-invariant control law to pump appropriate energy into the variable-length pendulum for achieving a desired swing motion (trajectory) with given desired energy and length of the pendulum. First, we show that it is difficult to avoid singular points in the controller designed by using the conventional energy-based control approach in which the total mechanical energy of the system is controlled. Second, we propose a tracking controller free of singular points by shaping only the kinetic energy of rotation and the potential energy of the pendulum and not utilizing the kinetic energy related to the motion along the rod. Third, we analyze globally the motion of the pendulum and clarify the stability issue of some closed-loop equilibrium points; and we also provide some conditions on control parameters for achieving the tracking objective. Finally, we present numerical simulation results to validate the presented theoretical results.

Lack of hearing ability hinders deaf children from mastering grammar in language studies. Unfortunately, such software targeting Malay language is limited. This paper attempts to generate new approach in handling such software. These include detection of defects when switching into local languages, date format and accommodating the local laws. The acceptance of international software for local use goes beyond just these aspects. For this purpose, software that supports the multi-languages is evaluated. The main research question of this paper: The lack of cultural dimensions in localisation testing of assistive technology decreases the effectiveness of localisation testing of the localised software. On the account of cultural dimensions, Hofstede's Cultural Dimensions will be experimented to study which cultural dimensions are most suited for such software. From our empirical results, the failure rate of the testing is higher compared to incorporating culture dimensions.
