In this paper, we demonstrate that thickness-profiled metallic gratings placed in a conical mounting can be approximated by a plane grating with surface resistance as a function of the position parameter. As for the method of analysis of thickness-profiled metallic gratings, we apply the multilayered step method, in which the grating region is partitioned into a set of stratified layers having rectangular-profiled gratings, and the flux densities expansion approach. As for the method of analysis for plane gratings with a thickness of zero, a spectral Galerkin method based on the mixed form of current expansions in the spectral and spatial domains is applied to the resistive boundary condition. Both methods are formulated for the three-dimensional scattering problem by linearly and circularly polarized incidence. From a comparison of the numerical results of thickness-profiled and plane metallic gratings for oblique incidence, the limit of the thickness is investigated. The educational material which can be used under various situations has multiple variants even for one lecture theme. The lecturer often constructs and manages the variants separately with ad hoc reuse. This scheme of reuse raises a problem of consistency among multiple variants. To resolve this problem, we introduce concept of software product line engineering into educational material management. Separation of common parts and variable parts in the educational material enable generation of variants depending on reuse scene. We design and implement a generation tool to evaluate the scheme.

This paper describes gait identification using cumulants of accelerometer data. Accelerometer data of three different walking speeds for each subject (normal, slow and fast) was acquired by a cell phone placed on the person's hip. Data analysis was based on gait cycles that were detected first. Cumulants of order from 1 to 4 with lags from 0 to 10 for second, third and fourth order cumulants were calculated from the cycles and used as feature vectors for classification which was accomplished by support vector machines (SVM). Six healthy young subjects participated in the experiment. According to their gait classification the average recognition rate was 93.1%. A similarity measure for discerning different walking types of the same subject was also introduced using principal component analysis (PCA).

This paper concerns the problem of swinging up multiple parallel pendulums on a cart by controlling only the energy of pendulums. Although the analysis of the energy control for swinging up single pendulum and two pendulums on the cart has been achieved in existing literature, a few analysis results have been reported for the case of multiple(greater than 2) pendulums. In this paper, we aim to provide some new results on swinging up n pendulums(n ≥ 3) by using a notion of normalized energy of a pendulum. We find that such notion enables us to facilitate the analysis of closed-loop behavior of all pendulums and establish some relationships between the motion of pendulums and their natural frequencies. Indeed, for the case of three pendulums with the different natural frequencies,irrespective of initial state of the three pendulums, we show that the energy of each pendulum converges to either of the desired value or the minimal value, and the motion of the three pendulums can be described by eight invariant sets, among which the invariant set corresponding to the convergent value of the energy of each pendulum being zero is asymptotically stable, and the rest of the invariant sets are unstable. This paper gives further insight on the energy control for cart-pendulum systems.

The most scientific papers dealing with handwriting recognition systems make statements relating to recognition performance based on a forced-recognition rate. This rate describes the ratio between the number of the correct recognized samples and the number of all possible samples. This paper proposes a new technique to improve the previous research work in order to have a better result. As part of the preprocessing phase the image file is checked for skewing. If the image is skewed, it is corrected by a simple rotation technique in the appropriate direction. Character fragmentation process is done based on the existing technique. The improvement of feature extraction process is made by detecting details of glyph and used as an input for the classification process of ANN (Artificial Neural Network) to develop a full OCR system. Result indicated that some versions, even upon first using them, were at least as good as last methods of recognition.
