Emotion recognition using brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) is an emerging field with the ongoing challenge of developing robust and efficient classification methods. This study introduces an original approach, the multi-representation convolutional neural network (MrCNN), designed to exploit the complementary features of recurrence plots (RP) and spectrograms. The efficacy of this new method was empirically evaluated and compared with the standalone RP and spectrogram methods in emotion classification tasks using electroencephalogram (EEG) signals. Two widely used datasets, DEAP and SEED, were used as the experimental platforms for this study. Employing a multifaceted analytical approach involving descriptive statistics, data visualization, and hypothesis tests, this study revealed that MrCNN significantly outperforms the standalone RP and spectrogram methods in terms of key performance metrics. Specifically, MrCNN achieved an accuracy of 0.9663, sensitivity of 0.9848, specificity of 0.9825, kappa score of 0.9511, and F1 score of 0.9656 for the DEAP dataset. For the SEED dataset, the accuracy was 0.9695, with sensitivity, specificity, kappa scores, and F1 score of 0.9844, 0.9842, 0.9543, and 0.9695, respectively. These results were statistically validated, and a comparative analysis with existing literature substantiated the robustness and superiority of the MrCNN method. This study sets new performance benchmarks and offers a reliable and effective approach for emotion classification using EEG signals.

Traffic flow prediction plays a crucial role in the management and operation of urban transportation systems. While extensive research has been conducted on predictions for individual transportation modes, there is relatively limited research on joint prediction across different transportation modes. Furthermore, existing multimodal traffic joint modeling methods often lack flexibility in spatial-temporal feature extraction. To address these issues, we propose a method called Graph Sparse Attention Mechanism with Bidirectional Temporal Convolutional Network (GSABT) for multimodal traffic spatial-temporal joint prediction. First, we use a multimodal graph multiplied by self-attention weights to capture spatial local features, and then employ the Top-U sparse attention mechanism to obtain spatial global features. Second, we utilize a bidirectional temporal convolutional network to enhance the temporal feature correlation between the output and input data, and extract inter-modal and intra-modal temporal features through the share-unique module. Finally, we have designed a multimodal joint prediction framework that can be flexibly extended to both spatial and temporal dimensions. Extensive experiments conducted on three real datasets indicate that the proposed model consistently achieves state-of-the-art predictive performance. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. Elliptic localization has become a hot research topic and has been widely used in various fields. In this paper, we propose a penalized semidefinite programming (SDP) method for the elliptic localization problem when both the transmitter position and signal propagation speed are unknown. We first formulate a nonconvex constrained weighted least squares (CWLS) problem using the connections between the unknown variables in the measurement model. Since the nonconvex CWLS problem is difficult to solve, we relax it into a convex SDP problem by applying semidefinite relaxation (SDR). Although the SDP problem avoids local convergence or divergence, its solution cannot reach the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) accuracy owing to the relaxation. In order to address this issue, we propose to add a penalty term to tighten the above SDP problem. Furthermore, we propose an adaptive selection procedure for choosing a proper penalty factor. Simulation results validate the effectiveness and efficiency of the penalized SDP method and show that the proposed method is able to reach the CRLB.

Laparoscopic surgery has transformed conventional open surgery. Robot-Assisted laparoscopic surgery which is minimally invasive is effective for operations in limited space. Nevertheless, the robotic system which is utilized in such surgery can inflict impair to the surgical instruments, organs, or tissues as a consequence of the narrow field of view and space available to operate, and insufficient tactile response. In laparoscopy, the surgeon observes what he operates via digital images which are displayed on a monitor. In addition to the surgeon's expertise, the image-guided surgery system could offer him significant support if that system is capable of understanding those images. computer Vision has been able to proceed due to the emergence of Machine Learning, and especially Deep Learning. This paper applies Deep Learning for surgical instrument detection for laparoscopic surgery. The fastest model, based on results trained on the COCO 2017 Dataset on TensorFlow Framework, for each of 4 algorithms-Faster-RCNN, SSD, CenterNet and EfficientDet-from Model Zoo, along with YOLOv4 on Darknet Framework, have been investigated in this work. The evaluation metrics used are Precision, Recall and F1-score. The results reveal that each model plays its part well;however, YOLOv4 seemed to breakthrough this statement by offering grate result for all three accuracy metrics. © 2022 IEEE.

Due to cloud security concerns, there is an increasing interest in information retrieval systems that can support private queries over public documents. It is desirable for oblivious document ranking and retrieval in public cloud at lower cost and faster speed without revealing query-related information. Currently, the term frequency-inverse document frequency (TF-IDF) and private information retrieval (PIR) techniques are used to solve this problem, but the encryption operation time is over dominant. Motivated by the observation of the sparsity of the TF-IDF matrix, we propose an efficient approach for oblivious document ranking and retrieval, called E-Coeus. It takes advantage of the high sparsity of the TF-IDF matrix to rearrange the matrix. Our method accelerates the speed of PIR inadvertently retrieving documents and reduces the user retrieval delay time. In a stand-alone experiment for a TF-IDF matrix of 1.2M rows and 64K columns with the sparsity of 10%, E-Coeus improves the document ranking and retrieval performance by 23% over the state-of-the-art approach, Coeus. With cluster of 64 machines, E-Coeus improves the performance by 34% over Coeus when the TF-IDF matrix sparsity is 30%.

Infectious diseases like the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) affect millions of individuals if not managed well in time. Thus, to reduce the transmission rate, effective diagnostic techniques must be identified. Early detection and diagnosis may be aided by Artificial Intelligence (AI) based automated diagnostics;however, these algorithms need a lot of pertinent data to be trained. In the early stages of a pandemic, gathering a lot of data is never an easy task. This presents challenges for accurate automatic diagnosis of such infectious diseases. To address this issue, a customized Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN) based architecture i. e., CoroWGAN-GP is proposed to synthesize images and to expand datasets. A dataset of 588 images with COVID-19, Normal, and Viral Pneumonia categories (taken from Cohen's repository [1]) was expanded using the proposed CoroWGAN-GP approach and used to train a proposed customized deep CNN architecture i. e., DeepCNN-CovNet19. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed model achieved a considerable detection accuracy. i. e., 98.0 % in detecting the disease. The effectiveness of the proposed method was further evaluated by comparing its results with the state-of-the-art methods in the literature. Comparative analyses indicate that the proposed approach offers a promising solution for the accurate diagnosis of COVID-19-like pandemics. © 2025 The Authors

Erasure codes have been widely applied to in-memory key-value storage systems for high reliability and low redundancy. In distributed in-memory key-value storage systems, update operations are relatively frequent, especially the partial-stripe update, which makes data update more challenging. Recently, existing research has been based on appending logs to accelerate parity data write. However, its logs are stored on disks, which decreases the system performance significantly. Therefore, we propose a novel in-memory key-value storage architecture, DNVPL, which utilizes NVRAM to log parity data. Our main idea is to design an appending-only update scheme to tradeoff the memory cost and the update overhead. We implement DNVPL with an in-memory key-value storage prototype, called LogKV. We evaluate it with different workloads. The experiments show that our scheme achieves high update performance from different metrics. Our scheme can reduce update latency by up to 49% and save storage space by 48% compared to the state-of-the-art schemes.

Hyperspectral images (HSIs) not only have a large number of spectral features, but also show a comprehensive spa-tial distribution of land cover and offer substantial advantages in the fine classification of ground materials. However, due to the high dimensionality and redundancy of HSIs and class imbalance in hyperspectral datasets, improving classification performance is still a huge challenge. Recently, graph-based learning algorithms are proven to be better classifiers for high dimensional data. Learning graph data and modeling spatial topological links be-tween features are significantly more accessible and more effective with graph-based deep learning, which has been demonstrated to be a promising approach. In the past few years, convolutional neu-ral networks (CNNs) and graph convolutional networks (GCNs) have achieved good results in HSI classification, but CNNs strug-gle to achieve good accuracy in low samples, while GCNs have a substantial computational cost. To resolve these issues, this paper proposes a feature fusion model using a 3D-CNN and hybrid-GAT named FFCHG. The algorithm consists of two elements: the 3D-CNN, which produces good classification for 3D HSI cube data, and GAT-based encoder and decoder modules that help in im-proving the classification accuracy of the 3D-CNN. Finally, the multiple features are merged with the help of two neural network models. Experiments on three public HSI datasets show that the proposed methods perform better than other state-of-the-art methods using the limited training samples and in low classifica-tion time with accuracy of more than 90% in all datasets and kappa with more than 91% for each dataset. © 2025 IEEE.
