The requirement for new flexible adaptive grippers is the ability to detect and recognize objects in their environments. It is known that robotic manipulators are highly nonlinear systems, and an accurate mathematical model is difficult to obtain, thus making it difficult make decision strategies using conventional techniques. Here, an adaptive neuro fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) for controlling input displacement and object recognition of a new adaptive compliant gripper is presented. The grasping function of the proposed adaptive multi-fingered gripper relies on the physical contact of the finger with an object. This design of the each finger has embedded sensors as part of its structure. The use of embedded sensors in a robot gripper gives the control system the ability to control input displacement of the gripper and to recognize particular shapes of the grasping objects. Fuzzy based controllers develop a control signal according to grasping object shape which yields on the firing of the rule base. The selection of the proper rule base depending on the situation can be achieved by using an ANFIS strategy, which becomes an integrated method of approach for the control purposes. In the designed ANFIS scheme, neural network techniques are used to select a proper rule base, which is achieved using the back propagation algorithm. The simulation results presented in this paper show the effectiveness of the developed method.

As science and technology continue to progress, we are getting used to utilize these new information technologies for the convenience of our daily lives. For example, Google Map and Open Street Map have become very popular and important tools for viewing street maps in recent years. For the purpose of map navigations, the research field of Route Recommendation has proposed several convenient and useful tools. However, most of these results are provided on a 2D planar map. For users, it is un intuitive and difficult to imagine realistic 3D scenes by only watching these linked line segments on a 2D map. Moreover, although many online maps provide photorealistic street views, these images are usually too complicated and containing too much unnecessary information. More important, these pictures are also fixed and invariant regardless of the changes of weathers and seasons. Therefore, in this research, we propose a novel navigation system which visualizes the results of route recommendation with NPR animation effects. Furthermore, by combining NonPhotorealistic Rendering techniques with the OpenWeatherMap, our system aims to create more interesting scenery with the real-time weather effects to improve users' navigation experience.

A semantics-based approach of space subdivision for indoor fine-grained navigation

Indoor navigation systems have become very popular in recent years. The effortless indoor space subdivision that generates reasonable navigation network for fine-grained navigation remains challenging. In this paper, we propose SSFGiNav-an approach of indoor space subdivision based on the combination of geometric and semantic information, particularly door semantics for indoor fine-grained navigation. Indoor space is subdivided based on its physical structure at first and then navigable/non-navigable and other possible semantics is used to subdivide the subspaces. The indoor corridor space is subdivided through the designed corridor semantic partitioning (CSP) algorithm by the positions of the doors. We present an indoor navigation network model and an automatic generation approach of navigation network from the results of space subdivision further using semantics between doors and rooms. Experimental results reveal that SSFGiNav provides an effective solution to the generation of indoor fine-grained navigation network and reduce the effort significantly ©, 2015, Binary Information Press. The problem of open-shop scheduling includes a set of activities which must be performed on a limited set of machines. The goal of scheduling in open-shop is the presentation of a scheduled program for performance of the whole operation, so that the ending performance time of all job operations will be minimised. The open-shop scheduling problem can be solved in polynomial time when all nonzero processing times are equal, becoming equivalent to edge coloring that has the jobs and workstations as its vertices and that has an edge for every job-workstation pair with a nonzero processing time. For three or more workstations, or three or more jobs, with varying processing times, open-shop scheduling is NP-hard. Different algorithms have been presented for open-shop scheduling so far. However, most of these algorithms have not considered the machine maintenance problem. Whilst in production level, each machine needs maintenance, and this directly influences the assurance reliability of the system. In this paper, a new genetic-based algorithm to solve the open-shop scheduling problem, namely OSGA, is developed. OSGA considers machine maintenance. To confirm the performance of OSGA, it is compared with DGA, SAGA and TSGA algorithms. It is observed that OSGA performs quite well in terms of solution quality and efficiency in small and medium enterprises (SMEs). The results support the efficiency of the proposed method for solving the open-shop scheduling problem, particularly considering machine maintenance especially in SMEs’.

In this paper, the accuracy of soft computing technique in solar radiation prediction based on series of measured meteorological data (monthly mean sunshine duration, monthly mean maximum and minimum temperature) taking from Iseyin meteorological station in Nigeria was examined. The process, which simulates the solar radiation with support vector regression (SVR), was constructed. The inputs were monthly mean maximum temperature (Tmax), monthly mean minimum temperature (Tmin) and monthly mean sunshine duration ( $$ \bar{n} $$ ). Polynomial and radial basis functions (RBF) are applied as the SVR kernel function to estimate solar radiation. According to the results, a greater improvement in estimation accuracy can be achieved through the SVR with polynomial basis function compared to RBF. The SVR coefficient of determination R 2 with the polynomial function was 0.7395 and with the radial basis function, the R 2 was 0.5877.

The Flower Pollination Algorithm (FPA) is a novel bio-inspired optimization algorithm that mimics the real life processes of the flower pollination. In this paper, we review the applications of the Single Flower Pollination Algorithm (SFPA), Multi-objective Flower Pollination Algorithm an extension of the SFPA and the Hybrid of FPA with other bio-inspired algorithms. The review has shown that there is still a room for the extension of the FPA to Binary FPA. The review presented in this paper can inspire researchers in the bio-inspired algorithms research community to further improve the effectiveness of the PFA as well as to apply the algorithm in other domains for solving real life, complex and nonlinear optimization problems in engineering and industry. Further research and open questions were highlighted in the paper.

In past decades, we have seen that the increasing speed of the network attacks compromising computer system functionality and degrading network performance. The security of these systems has attracted a lot of research in the field of intrusion detection and response system to reduce the effect of these attacks. Response is a major part of intrusion detection system. Intrusion detection system without a timely response is not considered good even they detect threat and generate alarms. Optimum response is based on the selection of proper response option. In this paper, we categorize the attacks and propose some response option to thwart these attacks.

A high-speed performance evaluation for a shared bus type large scale digital system

To evaluate performance of a large scale digital system, the system is modeled by stochastic timed petri nets (STPN) and performance index is estimated through iteration of a petri net simulation. When the performance evaluation is carried out in a large distributed environment, parallel calculation with incidence matrices of STPN can make the petri net simulation more efficient. In this paper, we proposed an ordering method of incidence matrices to reduce the communication costs in the parallel calculation of matrix operations. For this purpose, we first proposed a method for blocking the incidence matrices based on a structure of a system by considering synchronous and asynchronous buses as composing elements. We also proposed a method for converting sub-matrices of incidence matrices to band matrices. This method is based on the bread first search of STPN represented by the sub-matrices. Finally, we demonstrated an effect of the ordering on the time for performance evaluation by carrying out the performance evaluation using incidence matrices generated by the proposed method. In addition, we showed that the ordering method could reduce the communication costs in a large distributed environment by estimating the use rate of calculation nodes. © 2014 The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.
