In our previous research, we proposed an eyeball movement model that consists of a saccade model and a group gaze model for enhancing group interaction and communication. In this study, in order to evaluate the effects of the proposed model, we develop an advanced communication system in which the proposed model is used with a speech-driven embodied group entrained communication system. The effectiveness of the proposed model is demonstrated for performing the communication experiments with a sensory evaluation using the developed system.

In this paper, we propose and implement a medical support system considering P2P and IoT technologies. We used our implemented smart device that we call Smart Box. We have implemented in the Smart Box many functions and sensor such as body sensor, infrared sensor, chair or bed vibration control, light control, smell control and sound control. By using Smart Box the implemented system is able to control the situation of patients. We carried out experiments to evaluate the implemented system. The evaluation results show that the implemented system can detect the patient situation.

The coexistence of people and robots has been gaining much attention in recent years. However, not many robots can cope in various environments. In our previous study, we focused on the robot's role as an embodied physical medium and proposed a dress-up personal robot, kiroPi, to support embodied interaction in daily life. In this study, we develop a prototype of kiroPi, mobileware, and waterproof-ware that can adapt to a variety of conditions, such as life-logging and sports management.

In face-to-face conversation, embodied rhythms between speech and body movements such as nodding are mutually synchronized between talkers. This synchrony is called entrainment in communication, and it generates the sharing of embodiment in human interaction. Embodied communication, which is closely related to behavioral and physiological entrainment, is an essential form of communication that forms the basis of interaction between talkers through mutual embodiment. In particular, nodding has an important role as a regulator in embodied interaction and communication. The detection of nodding is useful for an estimation of the activity of conversation. In this paper, we propose a nodding detection model based on the analysis of the head movement involved in nodding and introduce a system that uses this model. In this system, nodding is detected from the rotational movement of a head, which is estimated by face tracking using Active Appearance Model. Furthermore, the effectiveness of the system is demonstrated in comparison with the nodding detection by visual inspection.

In this study, we develop a small pressure-sensor-driven round bar grip measurement device called DataGrip and construct the prototype system for infants, who have small fingers. DataGrip is made up of a round bar wrapped with a silicone tube that consists of up-and-down grip shafts. Two small pressure sensors between the grip shafts can measure perpendicularly oriented loads. We display the quantitative load applied to the system. On the basis of the measurement results, the effectiveness of the system in terms of load measurement is evaluated. Further, we examine the results of longitudinal measurement of an infant's grip by using the system. We find that grip strength increases with physical development, i.e., increases in height and weight.

This paper concerns a global stabilization control problem for a two-link underactuated robot moving in the vertical plane with a single actuator at the first joint and a spring between the two links(flexible elbow joint).Different from existing literature,we obtain the following ***,we present a property about the angle of the first joint,the torque and the equilibrium configuration of the robot which is critical for the motion analysis of the robot in this ***,we prove that when the spring constant is bigger than a mechanical parameter related to a coefficient of a gravitational term,the PD control on the angle of the first joint can globally stabilize the robot at the upright equilibrium point,where two links are in the upright ***,we validate the presented theoretical results via numerical investigation.

We developed an embodied video communication system in which a human-type avatar called VirtualActor, engaging in interactive behavior, was superimposed on the other speech partner's video image in a virtual face-to-face scene. The system posed some problems for VirtualActor such as a sense of restraint owing to sensor cables and the sensors' lack of portability. In this paper, we propose the concept of an embodied video communication system in which a CG character is superimposed on the other talker's video image in a face-to-face scenario, and we develop a prototype called E-VChat,. This system has a CG character, which moves on the basis of the talker's head motions with a motion-capture device and automatically generates motions on the basis of the talker's voice. Furthermore, we propose a multiple-character system in which CG characters crowd around the other talker virtually, and we develop the prototype system. These characters enhance human communication by facilitating interactive behavior on the basis of the talker's voice. An interview-style communication experiment is performed to confirm the effectiveness of the E-VChat system for 12 pairs of subjects using three communication modes: only the other talker's image, the other talker's image with the talker's avatar, and the other talker's image with the talker's avatar and character audience. The results show that all communication modes are positively assessed by sensory evaluation and that the other talker's image with talker's avatar and character audience mode is evaluated highly in paired comparison. © 2012 IEEE.

Centrality and Composition of Four-node Motifs in Metabolic Networks

Analysing subgraph patterns and recurring motifs in networks is a useful way to understand their local topology and func- tion. Motifs have been considered useful in analysing design patterns of networks as well. Three-node patterns (triads) in metabolic networks have been studied to some extent producing classification of organisms based on triads, but their network placement was not analysed. We obtain the frequencies of all four-node subgraphs in a wide range of metabolic networks. We construct significance profiles of subgraphs and employ correlation analysis to compare and contrast these profiles, highlight- ing four-node motifs. We then compute specific centrality measures of nodes involved in each subgraph, namely betweenness centrality and closeness centrality. We observe that multiple four-node motifs exist in metabolic networks. The correlation analysis shows that the significance profiles of Eukaryotic networks are highly correlated across organisms, whereas those of the Prokaryotic networks are correlated less so. The centrality indices of nodes that participate in identified network motifs are shown to be quite high. The analysis provides a tool to pinpoint the transition between evolution stages of Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic metabolic networks.

On the calculation of the values of heating/cooling loads based on more real state of a building in the city, influences of the sky radiance distribution and the surroundings around the building should be take into account. However they have not been considered to be important factors. in this paper, with the C1E standard general sky and the approximations that have analytic solution, we intend to present a new calculation method of surface irradiance value of the building surrounded by the other buildings. In the development, the accuracy of calculation and the processing time are made much account.

Most of the people make presentations by using tools such as pointers. However, the use of information devices such as laser pointers and mice can restrict the presenter's embodied motions and actions. In this paper, we propose a presentation support system that can expand embodiment by using a portable touch screen device. First, we develop a prototype of the system by using an iPhone, and then, we perform experimental evaluation. Next, we performe the evaluation of the modes of PPTouch, and the effectiveness of the system in various situations is clarified. Then we performe comparison with conventional pointers, and evaluation by participants. Both experiments also show the effectives of PPTouch. Copyright © IARIA, 2012.
