Robots are expected to play an important role in social welfare and service for older citizens. These robots are required to be able to smoothly coexist and cooperate with humans. Therefore, these robots should generate embodied interactions for greetings in order to elicit a feeling of relief. In the greeting interaction using arms between a human and a robot, the timing of an utterance of a voice greeting and a hand motion is important to consider for the synchronization of the embodied rhythms and impressions of humans. Therefore, in this paper, we analyze the timing of an utterance of a voice greeting and a hand motion preferred by humans in greeting interactions between a human and a robot. Initially, a hand-up motion and a handshake motion between humans, which are greeting interactions without and with contact, are analyzed. Based on the analysis, an interaction robot system capable of generating the hand-up motion and handshake motion for a greeting interaction with a human is developed. Subsequently, using the developed interaction robot system, the differences of motion characteristics between greeting interactions with and without contact preferred by humans are analyzed by an analysis-by-synthesis technique. © 2012 IADIS.

Humans often greet one another using a handshake, a common gesture of friendship. In the case of a human and a robot, the robot can smoothly begin to communicate and coexist with humans without feelings of aversion in humans;if it generates a handshake motion that is emotionally acceptable to humans. Thus, we have proposed a handshake request motion model and a handshake respond motion model to generate a handshake approaching motion prior to actually shaking hands with the human. In the handshake request motion model, the robot stretches its hand out to a human to request a handshake. In the handshake respond motion model, the robot responds a handshake when the human requests a handshake. The effectiveness of these models is demonstrated by experiments using a handshake robot system which is fabricated based on the average size of a human arm. Therefore, in this paper, we develop a small-size handshake robot system that uses the handshake request motion model and the handshake respond motion model to generate a handshake approaching motion with a human. The effectiveness of the robot system is demonstrated by sensory evaluation. Furthermore, a handshake motion between robots is realized by using two small-size handshake robot systems which are adopted these models. © 2012 IEEE.

HPSG-based preprocessing for english-to-Japanese translation

Japanese sentences have completely different word orders from corresponding English sentences. Typical phrase-based statistical machine translation (SMT) systems such as Moses search for the best word permutation within a given distance limit (distortion limit). For English-to-Japanese translation, we need a large distance limit to obtain acceptable translations, and the number of translation candidates is extremely large. Therefore, SMT systems often fail to find acceptable translations within a limited time. To solve this problem, some researchers use rule-based preprocessing approaches, which reorder English words just like Japanese by using dozens of rules. Our idea is based on the following two observations: (1) Japanese is a typical head-final language, and (2) we can detect heads of English sentences by a head-driven phrase structure grammar (HPSG) parser. The main contributions of this article are twofold: First, we demonstrate how off-the-shelf, state-of-the-art HPSG parser enables us to write the reordering rules in an abstract level and can easily improve the quality of English-to-Japanese translation. Second, we also show that syntactic heads achieve better results than semantic heads. The proposed method outperforms the best system of NTCIR-7 PATMT EJ task. © 2012 ACM.

In a watch-over system, the machine has to detect intention of human user according to circumstance, and such detection has to be able to be achieved naturally without special interface gadget like a hand controller. Hence, in this paper, we propose a hand detection and fingertip tracking method for use in an intelligent room. We are constructing an intelligent room in which any user can control home appliances with intuitive gestures. The presented intelligent room is a room in which home appliances and an interaction monitoring robot for elderly people are operated using intuitive gestures, without any additional equipment and any restriction for positions. The proposed method detects the hand region from a range data, which is robust for environmental changing in complex background. Using weak classifiers, the shape of extracted hand and direction of the fingertip is estimated without needing to know the location of the face. These processes are computationally fast enough to track an object in real time. In addition, characters written on a virtual 2D plane by the user's finger movement were estimated using incremental simple PCA for operator recognition. © 2012 IEEE.

We developed an embodied video communication system in which a human-type avatar called “VirtualActor,” engaging in interactive behavior, was superimposed on the other speech partner's video image in a virtual face-to-face scene. The system posed some problems for VirtualActor such as a sense of restraint owing to sensor cables and the sensors' lack of portability. In this paper, we propose the concept of an embodied video communication system in which a CG character is superimposed on the other talker's video image in a face-to-face scenario, and we develop a prototype called “E-VChat,”. This system has a CG character, which moves on the basis of the talker's head motions with a motion-capture device and automatically generates motions on the basis of the talker's voice. Furthermore, we propose a multiple-character system in which CG characters crowd around the other talker virtually, and we develop the prototype system. These characters enhance human communication by facilitating interactive behavior on the basis of the talker's voice. An interview-style communication experiment is performed to confirm the effectiveness of the E-VChat system for 12 pairs of subjects using three communication modes: “only the other talker's image,” “the other talker's image with the talker's avatar,” and “the other talker's image with the talker's avatar and character audience.” The results show that all communication modes are positively assessed by sensory evaluation and that the other talker's image with talker's avatar and character audience mode is evaluated highly in paired comparison.

In the scattering problem of periodic gratings, at a low grazing limit of incidence, the incident plane wave is completely cancelled by the reflected wave, and the total wave field vanishes and physically becomes a dark shadow. This problem has received much interest recently. Nakayama et al. have proposed "the shadow theory". The theory was first applied to the diffraction by perfectly conductive gratings as an example, where a new description and a physical mean at a low grazing limit of incidence for the gratings have been discussed. In this paper, the shadow theory is applied to the analyses of multilayered dielectric periodic gratings, and is shown to be valid on the basis of the behavior of electromagnetic waves through the matrix eigenvalue problem. Then, the representation of field distributions is demonstrated for the cases that the eigenvalues degenerate in the middle regions of multilayered gratings in addition to at a low grazing limit of incidence and some numerical examples are given. We developed and demonstrated the effectiveness of Hyakunin-Eyesshu, the world's first tabletop Hyakunin-Isshu game against a computer opponent that utilizes action prediction based on gaze and hand-motion detection. In this study, we also developed the gaze-and-touch algorithm, which can realize just-found and even-match timings for use in the computer opponent's play. The just-found timing is the timing for which the computer opponent can obtain a correct card concurrently with the reaction time of the player just after the player has found the card. The even-match timing is the timing for which the computer opponent obtains the card at almost the same time as the player by predicting the player's hand reach. Finally, the authors performed an experimental evaluation of the proposed algorithm and determined that various types of play can be realized through a combination of these timings. © 2012 IEEE.

This paper describes an active control system intended to minimize the vertical vibrations transferred from the vehicle seat to the head. This system controls mechanical properties effectively such as the spring constants and damping coefficients of the seat cushion by using an optimized algorithm that comprises vibration analysis and an optimization method. To estimate an efficient optimized algorithm, we investigate reduction rates of the vertical vibrations on the head using a vibration analysis based on a model for the seat-occupant system when the mechanical properties are controlled in a part of seat cushion. These results showed relationships between the reduction rates and the mechanical properties of the each seat cushion optimized at frequency band. In conclusion, the effective optimized algorithm using these relationships enable to reduce the vertical vibrations on the head while reducing the number of seat cushion control. ©2012 The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers.
