The metallic waveguide is one of many effective media for millimeter- and submillimeter-waves because of the advantage of its lowloss nature. This paper describes the fabrication method of PTFE-filled waveguide components with the use of the SR (synchrotron radiation) direct etching process of PTFE, sputter deposition of metal, and electroplating. PTFE is known as a difficult material to process with high precision. However, it has been reported that PTFE microstructures can be fabricated by the direct exposure to SR. First, an iris-coupled waveguide BPF with 5-stage Chebyshev response is designed and fabricated for the Q-band. It is demonstrated that the present process is applicable for the fabrication of the practical components inclusive of narrow patterns. Then, a cruciform 3 dB coupler with air-filled posts is designed and fabricated for the Q-band. Directivity and matched state of the coupler can be realized by "holes" in the dielectric material. In a watch-over system, the machine has to detect intention of human user according to circumstance, and such detection has to be able to be achieved naturally without special interface gadget like a hand controller. Hence, in this paper, we propose a hand detection and fingertip tracking method for use in an intelligent room. We are constructing an intelligent room in which any user can control home appliances with intuitive gestures. The presented intelligent room is a room in which home appliances and an interaction monitoring robot for elderly people are operated using intuitive gestures, without any additional equipment and any restriction for positions. The proposed method detects the hand region from a range data, which is robust for environmental changing in complex background. Using weak classifiers, the shape of extracted hand and direction of the fingertip is estimated without needing to know the location of the face. These processes are computationally fast enough to track an object in real time. In addition, characters written on a virtual 2D plane by the user's finger movement were estimated using incremental simple PCA for operator recognition.

This paper suggests a substrate integrated waveguide in honeycomb structure consisting of a number of small holes (air-filled posts) drilled vertically and entirely through both plating-conductor layers of the substrate (HCSIW), and shows a design method of an SIW right-angle corner as an example of its applications. First, the propagation constant of an HCSIW is derived from the simulation results of a commercial em-simulator (HFSS), and then its effective dielectric constant (Εreff) and transmission loss are discussed. It is shown that the Εreff is approximately determined from the ratio of all the cross-section area of the air-filled posts to the remainder dielectric one, and the transmission loss is comparable with that of a common SIW. Next, the SIW right-angle corner is designed by arranging appropriately honeycomb structure. Experimental verification for the designed right-angle corner is also shown. © 2012 EUROPEAN MICROWAVE ASSOC.

The energy-based swing-up control for a rotational pendulum by controlling both the total mechanical energy and actuated arm has been addressed theoretically. In this study, we verify experimentally the exiting solution of the energy-based swing-up control for the rotational pendulum system developed by Quanser Inc. We show experimentally that the energy-based swing-up control is effective to swing-up the pendulum up to the upright position and drive the arm to a desired position. We discuss about and compare with another swing-up control method of controlling only the rotational kinetic energy of the pendulum.

We developed and demonstrated the effectiveness of Hyakunin-Eyesshu, the world's first tabletop Hyakunin-Isshu game against a computer opponent that utilizes action prediction based on gaze and hand-motion detection. In this study, we also developed the gaze-and-touch algorithm, which can realize just-found and even-match timings for use in the computer opponent's play. The just-found timing is the timing for which the computer opponent can obtain a correct card concurrently with the reaction time of the player just after the player has found the card. The even-match timing is the timing for which the computer opponent obtains the card at almost the same time as the player by predicting the player's hand reach. Finally, the authors performed an experimental evaluation of the proposed algorithm and determined that various types of play can be realized through a combination of these timings.

Comfortable amplitudes of rhythmic forearm movements increase as periods increase. To explain this phenomenon in the horizontal plane, it has been suggested that the nervous system prefers a high-stability movement under a feedforward control of the musculo-skeletal system. Here we tested this hypothesis in the vertical plane. The experimental measurement and the stability analysis of the nonlinear muscle model were performed. The stability analysis of the musculoskeletal model showed a wide range of high-stability conditions, which cannot clearly explain the experimentally observed period-amplitude relationship. Reasons for the unclear results were discussed.

A study of uniform approximation of plane gratings with periodic surface resistance

Surface-relief and index modulated dielectric gratings can be approximated by uniform equivalent permittivity when the periodicity is very small compared with a wavelength. In plane gratings, equivalent anisotropic effects of surface resistance will also appear when the periodicity is very small. In this paper, a versatile uniform approximation of equivalent resistance is proposed in the three-dimensional electromagnetic scattering problem of plane gratings with periodic surface resistance illuminated by linearly and circularly polarized incidence. Scattering properties are obtained by the equivalent resistance from our proposed uniform approximation. Scattering by plane gratings with various periodic surface resistance are analyzed rigorously by the Galerkin method based on the mixed form of current expansions in the spectral and spatial domains. By investigating the difference between the equivalent resistance and the numerical values corresponding to the surface resistance of plane gratings, the applicable condition of the uniform approximation is directly cleared. And the equivalent anisotropic effects of various resistance distributions are compared. © 2011 The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.

High-Q and scalable MOS varactor for mm-wave VCO has been studied. To realize high-Q varactor in mm-wave region, low varactor capacitance and low series resistance of unit cell are essential. Since low varactor capacitance and low series resistance are impossible to realize simultaneously, optimization and scalable model are necessary. This paper presents strategy of high-Q optimization, a novel scalable model for mm-wave varactor, and confirmation results by VCO measurements. The Q of small-geometry varactor improved 30 times at f =30 GHz. The novel scalable varactor model improved its accuracy from 21.9% to 1.7%.

This paper proposes a method for generating a subject-specific emotional feature space that expresses the correspondence between the changes in facial expression patterns and the degree of emotions. The feature space is generated using self-organizing maps and counter propagation networks. The training data input method and the number of dimensions of the CPN mapping space are investigated. The results clearly show that the input ratio of the training data should be constant for every emotion category and the number of dimensions of the CPN mapping space should be extended to effectively express a level of detailed emotion.
