One of the challenges for ubiquitous intelligence computing is how to enable ubiquitous devices (u-devices) certain levels of intelligent/smart/autonomic/ processing capabilities. Due to their limited capacity and processing power, it is difficult to embed such capabilities into u-devices. The idea is to design an intelligence entity sharing pool in which an intelligence entity can be dynamically composed from a number of atomic intelligence entities and/or complex intelligence entities. This research has two phases: (1) how to design the intelligence entity sharing pool; and (2) how to share an intelligence entity in the sharing pool. The second phase is completely upon the first phase as the premise. This paper is mainly focused on presenting our design ideas of the intelligence entity sharing pool in the following aspects: (1) defining atomic intelligence entity and complex intelligence entity; (2) designing an appropriate structure for storing atomic/complex intelligence entities; and (3) designing mechanisms for composition and decomposition of intelligence entity/entities.

Automatic font-written Optical Character Recognition (OCR) is highly desirable for numerous modern information technology (IT) applications. Reliable font-written OCR's for Latin scripts are readily in use since long. For cursively scripted languages, that are the mother tongues of over one fourth of the world population, such OCR's are however not available at a robust and reliable performance. In this regard, the main challenge is the mandatory connectivity of characters/ligatures (i.e. graphemes) that has to be resolved simultaneously upon the recognition of these graphemes. Among the various approaches tried over decades, Hidden Markov Models (HMM)-based OCR's seem to be the most promising as they capitalize on the ability of HMM decoders to achieve segmentation and recognition simultaneously similar to the widely used HMM-based automatic speech recognition (ASR). Unlike ASR's, what is missing in HMM-based OCR's is the definition of a rigorously founded features vector capable to robustly achieving minimal “font type/size-independent” (omnifont) word error rates comparable to those realized with Latin scripts. Here comes the contribution of this paper that introduces such a sound features vector design, and experimentally shows its superiority in this regard.

In the last years, integrated hardware/software architectures for the remote and/or automatic management of WasteWater Treatment Plants have been developed using different approaches and techniques. In this paper, we propose a different modular infrastructure which extends a Service-Oriented Architecture with the concept of Complex Event Processing. Our proposal is based on an Enterprise Service Bus, a distributed message-oriented middleware, extended with a Rule Service, embedding a rule engine in the system, an Event Router and an Event Scheduler. The infrastructure is then used to implement a modular and flexible management system for a Sequencing Batch Reactor treatment plant: this system includes a database facility, a user interface, a temporized manager to schedule the different phases of the treatment process and, finally, a signal-aware realtime DSS used for an adaptive process control.

To pinpoint a specific person from two or more individuals per image stored in a database, the order of importance of all individuals in the image must be analyzed. An algorithm is proposed that can be used to automatically analyze the order of importance on the basis of face size and the placement of a face within an image. The relative values among the major person and the others are also calculated. The proposed algorithm includes four steps: detection of faces, acquisition of composition information, selection of the major person, and judgment of order of importance. Tests on 100 images suggest that the proposed algorithm is suitable for analyzing the order of importance of individuals per image.

This paper describes hardware implementations of crypto protocol elements for secured data communication in two wired networks of security system detectors. Those elements are basic to crypto protocol development for that type of network. In addition, hardware tools for the network controller and the network server that support this protocol were developed. These tools will allow us to test and debug the proposed security elements and the crypto protocol.

Modeling parasitic parameters of Through-Silicon-Via (TSV) structures is essential in exploring electrical characteristics such as delay and signal integrity (SI) of circuits and interconnections in three-dimensional (3-D) integrated circuits (ICs). This paper presents a complete set of self-consistent equations including self and coupling terms for resistance, capacitance and inductance of various TSV structures. Further, a reduced-order electrical circuit model is proposed for isolated TSVs as well as bundled structures for delay and SI analysis, and extracted TSV parasitics are employed in Spectre simulations for performance evaluations. Critical issues in the performance modeling for design space exploration of 3-D ICs such as cross-talk induced switching pattern dependent delay variation and cross-talk on noise are discussed. The error in these metrics when using the proposed models as compared to a field solver is contained to a few percentage points.

In this paper we describe a low cost embedded system for eye movement tracking that supports disabled persons with basic interaction with Bluetooth enabled electronic devices. The method is based on tracking the EOG potential. The device has a built-in 32-bit RISC processor that performs acquisition of multichannel differential EOG signals and signal recognition. Signal recognition is based on cross correlation principle where a simplified triangulated linear model for eye movement is used as a reference signal. The eye movement recognition is more or less user independent, but it takes some time and practice to become familiar with the system for efficient use. The embedded eye movement tracking device communicates with other devices via personal network, which is based on Bluetooth wireless technology. The communication protocol at the application level has been simplified in order to gain plain integration with other devices.
