Boosting white shark optimizer for global optimization and cloud scheduling problem

With the growing adoption of cloud computing in both public and private sector enterprises, the industry has experienced rapid expansion. To fully unlock the potential of cloud computing, efficient task scheduling becomes crucial. In cloud computing, task scheduling involves optimizing the allocation of tasks to a diverse range of resources, such as virtual machines, with the goals of reducing makespan, maximizing resource utilization, and minimizing response times. This challenge becomes even more pronounced for large-scale tasks due to the NP-hard nature of the problem. Consequently, the integration of metaheuristic algorithms into task scheduling has emerged as a solution to equitably distribute complex and diverse tasks across limited resources within acceptable timeframes. To enhance the quality of cloud computing services, this research introduces the modified white shark optimizer (mWSO) as an alternative task scheduling technique. The improved variant mWSO boosts the performance of the original WSO by introducing the following three enhancement steps: (1) introduce memory-based WSO to boost the exploitation phase, (2) propose an exploration-exploitation balance phase to enhance the exploration phase, and (3) introduce a control randomization parameter to balance exploration and exploitation properly. The mWSO is subjected to testing on both the global optimization problems from CEC2020 and cloud task scheduling problems. The experimental results of mWSO demonstrate high performance for CEC2020 competition benchmarks compared to other state-of-the-art and recent metaheuristic algorithms. In the case of the task scheduling problem, the mWSO achieved − 0.01 to 13.53% and 0.62–10.42% makespan and energy consumption reduction, respectively, for CEA-Curie workloads. For HPC2N workloads, mWSO achieved 7.27–29.53% makespan reduction and 3.52–26.08% energy savings over the compared metaheuristics. In recent years, self-assembling de novo-designed peptides have attracted increasing attention as materials for constructing submicrometer-scale structures. We have previously conducted structure-activity relationship studies on the BXBA-20 series of 20-residue amphiphilic peptides containing 2-aminoisobutyric acid (Aib) [Higashimoto, Y. et al. (1999) J. Biochem. 125, 705-712;Hara, T. et al. (2001) J. Biochem. 130, 749-755;Taira, J. et al. (2010) J. Pept. Sci. 16, 607-612]. These peptides share the common sequence Ac-(Aib-Xxx-Aib-Ala)₅-NH₂, where the introduction of a hydrophilic amino acid at the Xxx position results in the formation of a hydrophilic face on one side of the helix. Among them, some peptides exhibited weak intermolecular association and interactions with lipid membranes, though none demonstrated the ability to form submicrometer-scale structures through self-assembly. In this study, we present BKBL-20, a new member of this peptide series incorporating leucine on the hydrophobic face and lysine on the hydrophilic face. Circular dichroism spectroscopy indicated strong association in buffer, while hemolysis assays revealed significant membrane disruption. Transmission electron microscopy further confirmed the formation of ordered fibrous or array-like structures. These findings suggest that BKBL-20 successfully combines self-assembly and membrane-disruptive functions. © 2025 The Authors. Published by American Chemical Society.

Innovative grid technology leverages Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to enhance energy efficiency and mitigate losses. This paper introduces a 'novel three-tier hierarchical framework for smart homes within the Internet of Things (IoT)' ecosystem, addressing the current shortage of intelligent solutions that underutilize IoT advantages. Our framework's primary objective is to elevate smart homes to the microgrid level, enabling the seamless integration from the microgrid's renewable distributed energy sources and attaining maximum energy efficiency. In addition to traditional data processing, we propose the application of fog computing in smart homes. Through a rigorous simulation using real smart meter datasets, our study demonstrates that fog computing, mainly when using predictive filtering, may drastically cut down on the amount of data being sent and the load on the home's network. This innovation holds immense potential for revolutionizing energy management and resource allocation in the context of smart homes, thus contributing to a sustainable and efficient future. This research represents a critical step towards harnessing the power of IoT and fog computing in smart grids and homes, offering a promising path towards more intelligent, eco-friendly, and energy-efficient living spaces. © 2024 IEEE.

The advent of 5G technology marks a significant milestone in the evolution of smart businesses and technologies. This chapter explores the transformative effects of 5G on the communication and operational paradigms of intelligent entities. By providing unprecedented speed, low latency, and high connectivity, 5G facilitates real-time data exchange and enhances the integration of Internet of Things (IoT) devices. This, in turn, empowers smart cities, industries, and enterprises to achieve greater efficiency, innovation, and responsiveness. The chapter delves into specific case studies across various sectors, including healthcare, transportation, and manufacturing, demonstrating how 5G drives digital transformation. In healthcare, for example, 5G enables remote surgeries and real-time patient monitoring. In transportation, it supports autonomous vehicles and smart traffic management systems. In manufacturing, it enhances automation and predictive maintenance. The theoretical analysis presented highlights the critical role of 5G in supporting advanced applications such as augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and artificial intelligence (AI). Several instances of pneumonia with no clear etiology were recorded in Wuhan,China,on December 31,*** world health organization(WHO)called it COVID-19 that stands for“Coronavirus Disease 2019,”which is the second version of the previously known severe acute respiratory syndrome(SARS)Coronavirus and identified in short as(SARSCoV-2).There have been regular restrictions to avoid the infection spread in all countries,including Saudi *** prediction of new cases of infections is crucial for authorities to get ready for early handling of the virus ***:Analysis and forecasting of epidemic patterns in new SARSCoV-2 positive patients are presented in this research using metaheuristic optimization and long short-term memory(LSTM).The optimization method employed for optimizing the parameters of LSTM is Al-Biruni Earth Radius(BER)***:To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology,a dataset is collected based on the recorded cases in Saudi Arabia between March 7^(th),2020 and July 13^(th),*** addition,six regression models were included in the conducted experiments to show the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed *** achieved results show that the proposed approach could reduce the mean square error(MSE),mean absolute error(MAE),and R^(2)by 5.92%,3.66%,and 39.44%,respectively,when compared with the six base *** the other hand,a statistical analysis is performed to measure the significance of the proposed ***:The achieved results confirm the effectiveness,superiority,and significance of the proposed approach in predicting the infection cases of COVID-19.

Obstacle removal in crowd evacuation is critical to safety and the evacuation system efficiency. Recently, manyresearchers proposed game theoreticmodels to avoid and remove obstacles for crowd evacuation. Game theoreticalmodels aim to study and analyze the strategic behaviors of individuals within a crowd and their interactionsduring the evacuation. Game theoretical models have some limitations in the context of crowd evacuation. Thesemodels consider a group of individuals as homogeneous objects with the same goals, involve complex mathematicalformulation, and cannot model real-world scenarios such as panic, environmental information, crowds that movedynamically, etc. The proposed work presents a game theoretic model integrating an agent-based model to removethe obstacles from exits. The proposed model considered the parameters named: (1) obstacle size, length, andwidth, (2) removal time, (3) evacuation time, (4) crowd density, (5) obstacle identification, and (6) route *** proposed work conducts various experiments considering different conditions, such as obstacle types, obstacleremoval, and several obstacles. Evaluation results show the proposed model’s effectiveness compared with existingliterature in reducing the overall evacuation time, cell selection, and obstacle removal. The study is potentially usefulfor public safety situations such as emergency evacuations during disasters and calamities.

Swallowing assessment is a crucial task to reveal swallowing abnormalities. There are multiple modalities to analyze swallowing kinematics, such as videofluoroscopic swallow studies (VFSS), which is the gold standard method, and high-resolution cervical auscultation (HRCA), which is a noninvasive technique that uses a triaxial accelerometer attached to the patient's neck. Deep learning models play an essential role in data driven analysis of swallowing landmarks using VFSS and/or HRCA as input data. Most of these models utilize convolutional and recurrent neural networks. Here, we investigate the ability of transformers to analyze swallowing kinematics;specifically upper esophageal sphincter opening and laryngeal vestibule closure using HRCA signals. We tested the model using an independent test dataset to assess the generalizability of the proposed network. The proposed network achieved an average detection accuracy higher than 90% and 85% for both segmentation tasks, which outperform the hybrid neural networks from the literature, and the model obtained high-performance measures for the independent dataset, showing the transformers' ability to generalize on unseen data. © 2024 IEEE.

With the ever-expanding ubiquity of the Internet, wireless networks have permeated every facet of modern life, escalating concerns surrounding network security for users. Consequently, the demand for a robust Intrusion Detection System (IDS) has surged. The IDS serves as a critical bastion within the security framework, a significance further magnified in wireless networks where intrusions may stem from the deluge of sensor data. This influx of data, however, inevitably taxes the efficiency and computational speed of IDS. To address these limitations, numerous strategies for enhancing IDS performance have been posited by researchers. This paper introduces a novel feature selection method grounded in Support Vector Machine (SVM) and harnessing the innovative modified Aquila Optimizer (mAO) for Intrusion Detection systems in Wireless Sensor Networks. To evaluate the efficacy of our approach, we employed the KDD'99 dataset for testing and benchmarking against established methods. Multiple performance metrics, including accuracy, detection rate, false alarm rate, feature count, and execution time, were utilized for assessment. Our comparative analysis reveals the superiority of the proposed method, with standout results in terms of feature reduction, detection accuracy, and false alarm mitigation, yielding significant improvements of 11%, 98.76%, and 0.02%, respectively. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2023.
