The paper presents modeling, control and analysis of an urban public transport network. First, a centralized system description is given, built up from the dynamics of individual buses and bus stops. Aiming to minimize three conflicting goals (equidistant headways, timetable adherence, and minimizing passenger waiting times), a reference tracking model predictive controller is formulated based on the piecewise-affine system model. The closed-loop system is analyzed with three methods. Numerical simulations on a simple experimental network showed that the temporal evolution of headways and passenger numbers could maintain their periodicity with the help of velocity control. With the help of randomized simulation scenarios, sensitivity of the system is analyzed. Finally, infeasible regions for the bus network control was sought using by formulating an explicit model predictive controller.

The association between non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is now well established, as people with COPD are more likely to develop lung carcinoma. However, the evidence for this relationship is inconclusive and there is currently little information on the underlying molecular mechanisms. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are one of the regulatory factors in NSCLC and COPD that their functions are widely studied in many chronic diseases and cancers. In this study, we applied systems biology approaches to identify and predict miRNAs that potentially play regulatory roles between COPD and NSCLC. We performed differential expression analysis on public miRNA and mRNA expression datasets, for both of diseases, and then we reconstructed two miRNA-mRNA co-expression networks and merged these two co-expression networks into a community co-expression network. Results indicated the existence of very common miRNAs (ex. hsa-miR-326 and hsa-miR-1293) and mRNAs (such as FAT2, ALOX5AP, and LDB2) between the two mentioned diseases. Moreover, we discovered specific miRNAs (hsa-miR-574-3p) that targeted common mRNAs. We utilized drug-target interaction networks to identify candidate drugs for common mRNAs, which can be considered in the treatment of two diseases (e.g. iloperidone). Generally, our study highlighted common miRNAs between COPD and NSCLC that as new signatures or biomarkers for therapeutic purposes. Investigating the miRNA biomarkers in this study improves our understanding about the shared mechanisms between COPD and NSCLC. © 2022

The comparison on the performance of interdigitated electrode (IDE) graphite and carbon nanotube (CNT) using titanium dioxide-multiwall carbon nanotube (TiO2-MWCNT) composite as sensing materials to detect hydrogen gas is presented in this research work. Screen printing technique has been selected to deposited IDE graphite and CNT conductive pastes as the electrode thick film on a flexible substrate, which is continued by firing at 120°C each. TiO 2 -MWCNT paste was printed as a sensing layer on top of IDE, followed by firing at 350°C. FESEM was used to characterize the morphological analysis of the IDE film. The operating temperature was varied at 27°C, 50°C and 100°C and concentration varied from 100–1000 ppm for gas hydrogen. The gas sensor demonstrated as n-type gas characteristics where the response of the gas sensor produced increased current from the results. The results purpose when the sensor was exposed to hydrogen gas. Therefore, the ability of IDE graphite and CNT as an electrode to harvest the electron from sensing materials were successfully proven. The IDE CNT showed better response compare to IDE graphite, but both electrodes were able to sense 100 – 1000 ppm at the operating temperature of 27°C, 50°C and 100°C. The optimal of operating temperature for IDE graphite is 50°C and IDE CNT is at room temperature for the hydrogen gas detections in this research work.

Photovoltaic systems (PV) are exposed to various weather conditions during the day and getting the maximum power of a PV system is one of its major challenges. While the conventional methods take time to track the maximum power accompanying the fluctuation around the maximum power. Consequently, several metaheuristic algorithms have been presented to overcome the fluctuating around the maximum power. On the other hand optimization methods will search into entire the PV curve to extract the maximum power. This leads to unnecessary search points during the uniform shading conditions which decrease the convergence speed towards the maximum power. In overcoming the tracking time issues as well as the capacity to distinguish between uniform and partial shading conditions, a quick and efficient tracking technique connected to the grid system was presented in this paper. The proposed system, has been tested using MATLAB/SIMULINK, which includes a boost converter to track the maximum power with a sampling time of 0.05 seconds, While a voltage source converter (VSC) is used to transfer the power generated by solar panels to the grid. The simulation results demonstrated that the proposed method was successfully implemented, with an average tracking time of 0.412 s for different weather conditions. Moreover, the comparison with the conventional method of perturb and observe (P& O) has been presented to evaluate the proposed method’s efficiency.

Ransomware attacks are a prevalent cybersecurity threat to every user and enterprise today. This is attributed to their polymorphic behaviour and dispersion of inexhaustible versions due to the same ransomware family or threat actor. A certain ransomware family or threat actor repeatedly utilises nearly the same style or codebase to create a vast number of ransomware versions. Therefore, it is essential for users and enterprises to keep well-informed about this threat landscape and adopt proactive prevention strategies to minimise its spread and affects. This requires a technique to detect ransomware samples to determine the similarity and link with the known ransomware family or threat actor. Therefore, this paper presents a detection method for ransomware by employing a combination of a similarity preserving hashing method called fuzzy hashing and a clustering method. This detection method is applied on the collected WannaCry/WannaCryptor ransomware samples utilising a range of fuzzy hashing and clustering methods. The clustering results of various clustering methods are evaluated through the use of the internal evaluation indexes to determine the accuracy and consistency of their clustering results, thus the effective combination of fuzzy hashing and clustering method as applied to the particular ransomware corpus. The proposed detection method is a static analysis method, which requires fewer computational overheads and performs rapid comparative analysis with respect to other static analysis methods.

Global linear convergence of evolution strategies on more than smooth strongly convex functions

Evolution strategies (ESs) are zero-order stochastic black-box optimization heuristics invariant to monotonic transformations of the objective function. They evolve a multivariate normal distribution, from which candidate solutions are generated. Among different variants, CMA-ES is nowadays recognized as one of the state-of-the-art zero-order optimizers for difficult problems. Albeit ample empirical evidence that ESs with a step-size control mechanism converge linearly, theoretical guarantees of linear convergence of ESs have been established only on limited classes of functions. In particular, theoretical results on convex functions are missing, where zero-order and also first order optimization methods are often analyzed. In this paper, we establish almost sure linear convergence and a bound on the expected hitting time of an ES, namely the (1 + 1)-ES with (generalized) one-fifth success rule and an abstract covariance matrix adaptation with bounded condition number, on a broad class of functions. The analysis holds for monotonic transformations of positively homogeneous functions and of quadratically bounded functions, the latter of which particularly includes monotonic transformation of strongly convex functions with Lipschitz continuous gradient. As far as the authors know, this is the first work that proves linear convergence of ES on such a broad class of functions. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In today’s digital age, fake news has become a major problem that has serious consequences, ranging from social unrest to political upheaval. To address this issue, new methods for detecting and mitigating fake news are required. In this work, we propose to incorporate contextual and network-aware features into the detection process. This involves analyzing not only the content of a news article but also the context in which it was shared and the network of users who shared it, i.e., the information diffusion. Thus, we propose GETAE, Graph Information Enhanced Deep Neural Network Ensemble ArchitecturE for Fake News Detection, a novel ensemble architecture that uses textual content together with the social interactions to improve fake news detection. GETAE contains two Branches: the Text Branch and the Propagation Branch. The Text Branch uses Word and Transformer Embeddings and a Deep Neural Network based on feed-forward and bidirectional Recurrent Neural Networks ([Bi]RNN) for learning novel contextual features and creating a novel Text Content Embedding. The Propagation Branch considers the information propagation within the graph network and proposes a Deep Learning architecture that employs Node Embeddings to create novel Propagation Embedding. GETAE Ensemble combines the two novel embeddings, i.e., Text Content Embedding and Propagation Embedding, to create a novel Propagation-Enhanced Content Embedding which is afterward used for classification. The experimental results obtained on two real-world publicly available datasets, i.e., Twitter15 and Twitter16, prove that using this approach improves fake news detection and outperforms state-of-the-art models. © 2024, CC BY-NC-ND.

This work introduces a novel Physically Unclonable Function (PUF) based on the characteristics of Light-Emitting Diodes (LEDs) and Light-Detecting Resistors (LDRs) as long as these are combined. Specifically, we profit from the variations in the optical output of an LED caused by process variations, as well as from the variations in LDRs. In this way, our work allows for providing a PUF based on optical components, whose electrical response is a function of the used components. Notice that the electrical response refers not only to the static but also to the dynamical behavior. This way, a unique, double-component system can be easily constructed.

Many real-world optimization problems exhibit dynamic characteristics, posing significant challenges for traditional optimization techniques. Evolutionary Dynamic Optimization Algorithms (EDOAs) are designed to address these challenges effectively. However, in existing literature, the reported results for a given EDOA can vary significantly. This inconsistency often arises because the source codes for many EDOAs, which are typically complex, have not been made publicly available, leading to error-prone re-implementations. To support researchers in conducting experiments and comparing their algorithms with various EDOAs, we have developed an open-source MATLAB platform called the Evolutionary Dynamic Optimization LABoratory (EDOLAB). This platform not only facilitates research but also includes an educational module designed for instructional purposes. The education module allows users to observe: a) a 2-dimensional problem space and its morphological changes following each environmental change, b) the behaviors of individuals over time, and c) how the EDOA responds to environmental changes and tracks the moving optimum.
