Privacy-preserving explainable AI: a survey

As the adoption of explainable AI(XAI) continues to expand, the urgency to address its privacy implications intensifies. Despite a growing corpus of research in AI privacy and explainability, there is little attention on privacy-preserving model explanations. This article presents the first thorough survey about privacy attacks on model explanations and their countermeasures. Our contribution to this field comprises a thorough analysis of research papers with a connected taxonomy that facilitates the categorization of privacy attacks and countermeasures based on the targeted explanations. This work also includes an initial investigation into the causes of privacy leaks. Finally, we discuss unresolved issues and prospective research directions uncovered in our analysis. This survey aims to be a valuable resource for the research community and offers clear insights for those new to this domain. To support ongoing research, we have established an online resource repository, which will be continuously updated with new and relevant findings.

On-device diagnostic recommendation with heterogeneous federated BlockNets

The evolution of edge computing has advanced the accessibility of E-health recommendation services, encompassing areas such as medical consultations, prescription guidance, and diagnostic assessments. Traditional methodologies predominantly utilize centralized recommendations, relying on servers to store client data and dispatch advice to ***, these conventional approaches raise significant concerns regarding data privacy and often result in computational inefficiencies. E-health recommendation services, distinct from other recommendation domains, demand not only precise and swift analyses but also a stringent adherence to privacy safeguards, given the users' reluctance to disclose their identities or health information. In response to these challenges, we explore a new paradigm called on-device recommendation tailored to E-health diagnostics, where diagnostic support(such as biomedical image diagnostics), is computed at the client *** leverage the advances of federated learning to deploy deep learning models capable of delivering expert-level diagnostic suggestions on clients. However, existing federated learning frameworks often deploy a singular model across all edge devices, overlooking their heterogeneous computational capabilities. In this work, we propose an adaptive federated learning framework utilizing BlockNets, a modular design rooted in the layers of deep neural networks, for diagnostic recommendation across heterogeneous devices. Our framework offers the flexibility for users to adjust local model configurations according to their device's computational power. To further handle the capacity skewness of edge devices, we develop a data-free knowledge distillation mechanism to ensure synchronized parameters of local models with the global model, enhancing the overall accuracy. Fuzzy clustering for electric field characterization and its application to thunderstorm interpretability

Changes in the Atmospheric Electric Field Signal(AEFS) are highly correlated with weather changes, especially with thunderstorm activities. However, little attention has been paid to the ambiguous weather information implicit in AEFS changes. In this paper, a Fuzzy C-Means(FCM) clustering method is used for the first time to develop an innovative approach to characterize the weather attributes carried by AEFS. First, a time series dataset is created in the time domain using AEFS attributes. The AEFS-based weather is evaluated according to the time-series Membership Degree(MD) changes obtained by inputting this dataset into the FCM. Second, thunderstorm intensities are reflected by the change in distance from a thunderstorm cloud point charge to an AEF apparatus. Thus, a matching relationship is established between the normalized distance and the thunderstorm dominant MD in the space domain. Finally, the rationality and reliability of the proposed method are verified by combining radar charts and expert experience. The results confirm that this method accurately characterizes the weather attributes and changes in the AEFS, and a negative distance-MD correlation is obtained for the first time. The detection of thunderstorm activity by AEF from the perspective of fuzzy set technology provides a meaningful guidance for interpretable thunderstorms.

Numerical and spatiotemporal features fusion for video summarization

In this paper, we propose a numerical spatiotemporal approach for video summarization. The current solutions leverage deep learning techniques to tackle this task. However, existing methods do not employ the video shots’ length data in their networks. We first introduce a new ground truth labelling for video summarization. This ground truth tackles multiple users’ annotations and is inclusive of video shot length information. We then propose a novel network architecture Numerical SpatioTemporal Fusion Net, NSTFNet. The proposed architecture leverages the temporal modelling ability of the self-attention mechanism to model video’s vision data to be fused with structured numerical features of video shots. We evaluate our results on TVSum and SumMe datasets. Experimental results show that the proposed model outperforms state-of-the-art performance on the SumMe dataset with 51.29% and 54.42% f-scores on the canonical and augmented configurations, demonstrating the effectiveness of our proposed model compared to state-of-the-art methods. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2025.

ABL-SMOTE: A Novel Resampling Method by Handling Noisy and Borderline Challenge for Imbalanced Dataset for Software Defect Prediction

Machine learning algorithms face important implementation difficulties due to imbalanced learning since the Synthetic Minority Oversampling Technique (SMOTE) helps improve performance through the creation of new minority class examples in feature space before preprocessing. The underlying problem leading to performance deterioration emerges from noise and boundary instances found in the minority class rather than an excessive imbalance ratio. Noise and marginal samples become problematic during oversampling operations since they reduce the performance of classification models. This paper proposes an advanced version of Borderline-SMOTE (BL-SMOTE), called ABL-SMOT approach that utilizes INFFC for noise filtering to optimize data quality in the dataset. This improvement method for minority class sample placement and noise filtering ensures higher classifier performance through ABL-SMOTE. The proposed technique receives assessment through the usage of software defect datasets along with multiple testing classifiers against conventional data sampling procedures. The experimental outcomes show that ABL-SMOTE performs better than alternative approaches in most tested datasets because it is an effective preprocessing tool for imbalanced classification problems. © 2013 IEEE.

Cardiovascular Diseases Classification Using the Flow Direction Optimization Algorithms

Cardiovascular disease has gained significant attention from researchers in recent years because it is a leading cause of death worldwide. This paper introduces a classification method that employs an optimization algorithm to improve the accuracy of predicting cardiovascular disease development across various genders and age groups. Patient datasets often contain a substantial number of irrelevant, redundant, or noisy features, which can hinder the accuracy of the predictions. To address this issue, we propose the Flow Direction Algorithm (FDA), which selects the most relevant features of a disease to enhance the classification accuracy rate. In the prediction stage, we combined a Support Vector Machine (SVM) with the flow direction optimization algorithm (FDA) to identify the most relevant features. To enhance the classification results, this study investigated the FDA, OFDA, Genetic Algorithm (GA), and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithms combination with K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN) and SVM classification algorithms. The performance of the proposed algorithms is evaluated using accuracy, recall, precision, and selected features ratio as measures. The proposed algorithms based on SVM and KNN are compared using three datasets: the Heart Failure Clinical Dataset (HFCD), the Heart Dataset (HD), and the Heart Disease Prediction Dataset (HDPD) obtained from the UCI repository. The experimental results demonstrated that the SVM and KNN algorithms performed better when combined with the FDA or OFDA optimization algorithms. © (2025), (International Association of Engineers). We review and discuss the literature on these topics and highlight open research questions and future *** this survey, we aim to contribute to the academic discourse on AI security, enriching the understanding of potential risks and mitigations. The enhancement of Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) is required to ensure protection of network resources and services. This is a hot research topic, especially in the presence of advanced intrusions and attacks. This paper provides a comparison between Distributed Cumulative Histogram (DCH) as a Feature Selection (FS) technique, information Gain Ratio (IGR) FS and wrapper-based FS in terms of accuracy and Root Mean Square Error (RMSE). The utilization of DCH of the traffic instances in normal and attack cases allows us to compare the traffic charts. We can observe the difference between effective features and less effective ones. We verify the feasibility of using DCH as an FS technique in the field of anomaly detection with just six selected features giving more accurate results with most classifiers compared to the IGR and wrapper-based FS. We applied our experiments on the modern UNSW dataset with the WEKA simulation platform that contains a group of classification, feature reduction and selection techniques. © The Author(s) 2024.

Lung cancer is the most lethal form of cancer. This paper introduces a novel framework to discern and classify pulmonary disorders such as pneumonia, tuberculosis, and lung cancer by analyzing conventional X-ray and CT scan images called lung cancer risk prediction (LCRP) model. LCRP has four modules, namely data collection and preprocessing, data augmentation module, image segmentation module, and prediction module. Actually, LCRP employs three deep learning models;sequential model, functional model, and transfer model on publicly available training datasets. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have emerged as a highly effective field in machine learning, particularly for image datasets in the field of biomedical applications. The primary goal is to validate these models by comparing their performance with other models in order to determine their effectiveness in addressing challenging datasets. Our research has revealed a noteworthy enhancement in the efficiency of binary and multi-class classification using mask R-CNN image segmentation. During the model training process, a combination of Adam and stochastic gradient descent dual optimizers has been used to improve performance. LCRP have outperformed current pre-trained models by minimizing training parameters, computational costs, and overhead. It introduces 98.5% accuracy, 88.7% specificity, 89% sensitivity, 89.2% precision, and 89.09% F-measure. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2025.
