Maintenance of articular cartilage's functional mechanical properties ultimately depends on the balance between the extracellular matrix component biosynthesis, degradation, and loss. A variety of factors are known to modulate the rate of cartilage matrix synthesis (e.g., growth factors and stress/strain environment). In the present study, we develop an integrated mathematical model that quantifies biological processes within cartilage tissue modulated by insulin-like growth factors (IGFs). Specifically, the model includes IGF transport through a deforming porous media, competitive binding to binding proteins and cell receptors, and matrix macromolecule biosynthesis - particularly glycosaminoglycans (GAGs). These newly synthesized matrix molecules are then able to modify the material properties of cartilage. The model is used to investigate the effect of synovial fluid IGF-I concentration on cartilage homeostasis. The results presented here suggest that GAG production can be rapidly "switched on" when the concentration of IGF-I reaches a certain threshold, while it is predicted that high receptor concentration leads to heterogeneous matrix production. As for the combined effect of IGF-I and mechanical loading on biosynthesis, the current model predicts that a loading regime with high strain magnitude (e.g., 10%) can achieve a synergistic effect on matrix protein production. Furthermore, dynamic loading is seen to promote spatial homogeneous GAG production. © 2009 ASCE.

Search engines on the Web have popularized the keyword-based search paradigm, while searching in databases users need to know a database schema and a query language. Keyword search techniques on the Web cannot directly be applied to databases because the data on the Internet and database are in different forms. So keyword search systems in relational databases have recently proposed. However existing systems limit type of keywords to database value terms, and generally assumed that answers are in instance level. Thus, this research aims to propose an effective approach for free-form keyword searching in databases which allows users to search either with database value terms, metadata terms or user terms. The metadata model accommodates these terms as well as underlying database semantics. Moreover, we present a branch and bound algorithm used for finding the optimal answer graphs. Our preliminary experiment results confirm precision of our approach.

Design patterns are applied to solve the recurring software design problems,Unfortunately,choosing appropriate design patterns for the specific design problem is considered a difficult task.A search tool is,therefore,needed to supports selection,However,the existing design pattern searching methodologies generally have problems on keywordsearch *** this paper,we proposed an initial model to solve the problem by using Case-Based Reasoning(CBR) and Formal Concept Analysis(FCA).For the proposed model,a case base is created to represent design *** is used to be case organization that analyze case base for obtain knowledge embedded,The knowledge can suggest suitable indexes to use for new *** method is beneficial for learning index,This paper discusses the basis theoretical of representation and retrieval design patterns for this inprogress research,along with some preliminary result.

software developers currently find design patterns through search tools for solving software design problem. However, these search tools still have keyword-search problem. In this paper, we introduce the elementary idea to improve the design pattern retrieval tool. We propose the combination of case based reasoning (CBR) and formal concept analysis (FCA). Because of CBR lead to the smart solution and FCA provides flexible way to maintain indexing in the case base.

Olfaction is a long distance sense, which is widely used by animals for foraging or reproductive activities. Olfaction plays a significant role in natural life of most animals. For some animals, olfactory cues are far more effective than visual or auditory cues in search for objects such as foods and nests. Although chemical sensing is far simpler than vision or hearing, navigation in a chemical diffusion field is still not well understood. Therefore, this powerful primary sense has rarely been used inside the robotics community. This paper presents an effective olfactory-based planning and search algorithms for using on mobile robots. Olfactory-based mobile robots use odors as a guide to navigate and track in the unknown environments. The planning algorithms are based on Bayesian inference theory and artificial potential field methods. Inputs to the algorithms include the measured flow and the detection or non-detection events that happened at the robot location. This methodology results in algorithms for predicting likelihood of source location versus position. The robot would then optimize a desired trajectory to navigate in the odor plume and locate the odor source location.

In this paper, we propose to improve the SvS algorithm by skipping elements of the smaller set for reducing a search boundary. The boundary of skipped element is determined by boundaries of elements prior to and next to it. We perform experiments on uniformly distributed random datasets to compare our algorithm with the standard SvS. We use regression analysis to get an equation for determining an appropriate skipping number. Our results show that the skipping SvS algorithm using the equation obtained can reduce approximately 41% on the number of comparisons of the standard SvS algorithm.

The need for stricter security, availability of sophisticated algorithms and improved hardware at cheaper price, are the driving forces for increasing popularity of biometric authentication. Machine authentication from face images or fingerprints at the entrance of a building or at bank-teller is getting more and more common. The popularity of using face image features for authentication is due to its ease of use. But its success depends on proper orientation and illumination. Facial features change with the angle of orientation, and even a genuine person would be rejected by the machine due to improper orientation of the face towards the camera. In this work, we proposed a multi-layer perceptron based face identification technique which is robust to orientation of the face image under similar illumination condition. Training data of facial features against orientation angle features is used to train a Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP). It is then used for interpolation of facial features at different angles. Experiments were conducted with two types of face image identifying features, using PCA and ICA. A good interpolation property could be obtained by the trained MLP, and a zero equal error rate (EER) could be achieved.

In the business world, financial institutions, like banks and investment firms, heavily rely on technology to manipulate daily operations and support business. Many more business processes have now become automated and require procedures to be approved. For example, when providing business services liked personal / corporate loans, mortgage, or Letter of Credit (LC), a customer is required to submit information within their applications; whereas, the service provider has to perform complicated approval procedures, involving different departments or even external parties. In this paper, we discuss how a credit approval system (CAS) handles the workflow of such business processes. The system is extensible to contemporary technologies including business process execution language (BPEL), asynchronous JavaScript and XML (AJAX), and Java server face (JSF) in order to coordinate related parties through the Internet as well as to facilitate the operations and communications with different levels of staff in the Intranet. Our experiences and design characteristics will be further implemented into a system designed for a global financial firm.

In recent years the focus of grid computing shifted towards more data intensive applications, increasingly needing access to various public and private databases. Relocating the code for Data Preprocessing (DPP) closer towards the data source is the overall task of the D3 Gframework. This paper presents the data service side architecture to gather Data Statistics (DS) on-the-fly, use them in remote DPP methods on query results and gather exact continuous DS for whole tables inside a database. The performance results are showing low running costs for the continuous DS and the feasibility of the service side DPP functionality. Copyright © 2009, Inderscience Publishers.
