This paper is concerned with the robust H ∞ fault detection problem for a class of uncertain discrete-time nonlinear 2-D systems subject to Round-Robin scheduling protocol. The Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy model is used to approximate the nonlinearities, where the linear fractional uncertainties enter the system in a random way. A kind of widely used communication mechanism, namely, Round-Robin communication protocol, is adopted to periodically schedule the sensors and the fault detectors to realize the information exchange in order to reduce the bandwidth usage in a networked environment with limit resource. An improved 2-D fuzzy residual generator is constructed to detect the possible fault, where the stability analysis of the resulting augmented 2-D system is discussed. It is accomplished by using a combination of the basis-dependent Lyapunov-like function and the stochastic analysis techniques. Sufficient conditions are first established to guarantee the globally asymptotic stability of the error dynamics of the state estimation with prescribed H ∞ performance constraints. Then, a residual generator is proposed to detect the possible faults. The effectiveness of the developed algorithm is demonstrated via application to the fault detection problem for a thermal process.

Partial discharge early detection is a major issue in preventative maintenance. This condition is necessary to prevent greater damage in the high voltage system. The PD detection method using UHF sensors has become an attractive method because of its high sensitivity and the ability to detect the PD location. The objective of this study was to investigate the performance of an antipodal Vivaldi antenna (AVA) as the UHF sensor for the partial discharge detection. The simulation was carried out using CST Design StudioTM to analyze the optimal parameters of the antenna before it was manufactured. The result revealed that the AVA has the good capability to be used as UHF sensor for PD detection with the high sensitivity and good directivity.

Satellite imagery catalog system is developed for the user’s need regarding with the utilization of satellite imagery for various applications. The aim of the system development is the dissemination of data, particularly at the national scope. The system has been established and continuously operated until recently. In order to maintain the customer loyalty and to raise customer satisfaction, the system improvement is required. Based on user requirement analysis, the system should be improved in terms of three factors, i.e. transaction time, product derivations, and additional data processing service. The existing business process will be analyzed by adopting the system improvement. The process is categorized as business process improvement. The new version of business processes will be operated in the catalog system by applying the developed information system methods. Various methods classified as organizational-approach were analyzed in this research, and the most suitable method for improving the system is process innovation method, considering the urgent user need for regional development planning and rapid development of satellite imagery technology. The objective of this research was the improvement of satellite image catalog system by using the most suitable process innovation method for the case study. The expected result is to increase the time efficiency of satellite image data service and its processing.

After dealing with the very recent history of Moore's law in the previous issue of IEEE Industrial Electronics Magazine, I will jump far back into the past for this issue, taking the opportunity given by a present-world economic event. The recent collapse in oil prices to around US$30/barrel, after it soared in 2008 to peak at US$140/barrel, was welcomed by drivers, airlines, and transportation companies, but it is not beneficial from all points of view. The collapse causes major stresses in the financial world and weakens the awareness of the finiteness of fossil reserves and of the need for switching to renewable nonpolluting resources. Prospects such as these are not new. Nevertheless, despite the warnings launched decades ago by the models developed by several groups, starting with the system Dynamics Group of Jay Forrester at Massachusetts Institute of technology (1971) and by the Club of Rome with the Meadows' Report (1972) [1], the industrialized world has long delayed realizing the weakness of its dependence on nonrenewable resources and, more generally, on the limited availability of raw materials. The extraordinary industrial development in the United States during the two postwar periods depended, to a major extent, on the wide availability of oil at a very low cost, after geological exploration in the 1930s revealed immense oil fields in Asia (e.g., the Persian Gulf, Iran, etc.). The European choice of coal, formalized early after World War II with the institution of the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC), pointed to a less valuable, although important, energy source. More recently, the new strong Eastern economies, notably those of China and India, have resulted a dramatic rise in oil demand that called for a keener evaluation of the limits of existing reserves. During the last few years, several governments have undertaken steady policies in support of technological research for the replacement of fossil fuels and the reduction of pollution. Thes

Network reconfiguration and capacitor allocation are two valuable tools to optimally manage distribution systems. In the present work, an efficient algorithm is proposed for the joint problem of reconfiguration and capacitor placement in distribution systems. The multi-objective problem is formulated to minimize objective functions of total network power losses, bus voltage violation, and branch loading deviations subject to different technical and operational constraints. To enhance exploration ability, the Symbiotic Organisms Search algorithm is strengthened with Particle Swarm Optimization capabilities to develop the Hybrid Symbiotic Organisms Search algorithm, which is applied to solve the proposed problem. Objective functions are fuzzified and aggregated by a geometric mean operator to have the same scales. The proposed joint optimization problem is solved with the introduced Hybrid Symbiotic Organisms Search algorithm in two different case studies of balanced and unbalanced test systems. According to obtained results that are compared with some well-known evolutionary algorithms, the superiority of the Hybrid Symbiotic Organisms Search algorithm is confirmed in terms of solution optimality and convergence speed.
