G′ band in double- and triple-walled carbon nanotubes: A Raman study

Double- and triple-walled carbon nanotubes are studied in detail by laser energy-dependent Raman spectroscopy in order to get a deeper understanding about the second-order G′ band Raman process, general nanotube properties, such as electronic and vibrational properties, and the growth method itself. In this work, the inner nanotubes from the double- and triple-walled carbon nanotubes are produced through the encapsulation of fullerene peapods with high-temperature thermal treatments. We find that the spectral features of the G′ band, such as the intensity, frequency, linewidth, and line shape are highly sensitive to the annealing temperature variations. We also discuss the triple-peak structure of the G′ band observed in an individual triple-walled carbon nanotube taken at several laser energies connecting its Raman spectra with that for the G′ band spectra obtained for bundled triple-walled carbon nanotubes.

Breakthroughs in technology are making the internet an ever-growing phenomenon, and we have witnessed an enormous growth of blogs in the blogosphere. However, the blogosphere has been crippled by disorganised and uncontrolled growth, and many blogs are of poor quality. Development domains, such as software engineering, website engineering, and information systems, have provided accepted models for the assessment of the quality of their products. However, to the best of our knowledge, there appears to be no standard model for the assessment of blog quality. In this paper, we propose a blog quality model as a guide for bloggers at large, with a set of 49 criteria grouped into 11 families of features that are relevant to blog quality. This model has been constructed by determining a set of criteria from a review of the relevant literature and blogs and then measuring the acceptability of these criteria by means of questionnaire surveys sent to sample populations of blog readers. The management of privacy and personal information within multi-cultural domain such as clouds and other universal collaborative systems requires intrinsic compliance-checking and assurance modules in order to increase social trust and acceptance. Focusing mainly on medical domains, this issue is particularly important due to the sensitivity of health related data in international data protection law. The use of ontologies and semantic technologies can provide relatively easy interpretation of legislation at run time, and can allow the logging of data access events to serve for future audits. However, the enforcement of semantic web rules (SWRL rules) on complex and heterogeneous architectures is expensive and might present runtime overheads. We believe a mapping of our semantic web privacy policies to a standard access control language such as XACML would be a useful alternative. A translation to XACML, would allow the integration of these policies with existing security and privacy policies being adopted on clouds environments. This paper describes a mathematical formalism for mapping SWRL (Semantic Web Rule Language) privacy rules to XACML policies and also explains the underline implementation requirements of this formalism. The paper is focused on fuzzy cognitive maps - abstract soft computing models, which can be applied to model complex systems with uncertainty. The authors present two distinct methodologies for fuzzy cognitive map reconstruction based on gradient learning. Both theoretical and practical issues involved in the process of a map reconstruction are discussed. Among researched and described aspects are: map sizes, data dimensionality, distortions, optimization procedure, etc. Theoretical results are supported by a series of experiments, that allow to evaluate the quality of the developed approach. The authors compare both procedures and discuss practical issues, that are entailed in the developed methodology. The goal of this study is to investigate theoretical and practical problems, that are relevant in the Fuzzy Cognitive Map reconstruction process.

This paper describes a system developed to assist in model-based training of minimally invasive, laparoscopic procedures. The key factor motivating the development of the device called CAST (computer-Assisted Surgical Trainer) is the need to improve the state-of-the-art in teaching laparoscopy, and ultimately achieve better surgical outcomes. CAST's design concept and architecture is presented with its major elements that facilitate guided (both haptic and visual) execution of tasks, performance assessment, and comparative analysis of results. Both software and hardware models and implementations are given. The system, while currently intended for off-line, laboratory use, has an excellent potential for real-time assistive functions in the operating room.

Towards ontology driven semantic conflicts detection in web services at message level

One of the biggest problems for establishing semantic interoperability is semantic conflicts, which prevent seamless message exchange between heterogeneous Web services. Consequently, numerous work has been done to establish semantic interoperability by solving semantic conflicts. However, the current work has not reached its maturity level to solve this problem effectively. Therefore, this paper proposes a new ontology driven approach to detect semantic conflicts between heterogeneous Web services at message level. This new approach will advance the process of establishing semantic interoperability in order to allow heterogeneous Web services to exchange their messages seamlessly. The main purpose of our approach is to detect the potential conflicts that occur during message exchange process. Copyright © 2013, IGI Global.

With the growth of wireless topology during recent decades, routing protocol in Ad-hoc networks has come to the limelight. Routing is defined as a technique of the best route from the source to the destination. VANETs comprise a special subclass of Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs). One of the hardships with routing protocols in VANET is related to do with HELLO message which brings about a route. Among the most common solutions is one that utilizes Routing Table Flag for checking the route status. By checking the Routing Table Flag (RTF) each node's condition will be specified. Through considering this mode, various acceptable results regarding packet loss, packet delivery ratio, throughput and number of received packets have been achieved. Experiments using NS-2 to measure the packet loss, throughput, number of receive packets and packet delivery ration for three different scenarios are presented. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

Nowadays, educational technology is getting more important for the learning environment. Much research has been done to investigate the effectiveness of e-learning and development of collaborative activities. It is thus viable to develop a web based system so that collaborative activities between users can take place. This means that users can collaborate in doing assignments and projects. In this study the web based system and results from its evaluation are described. The requirements for the web based system are gathered via interviews and surveys. This resulted in the identification of tools and features suitable for collaborative learning which forms the attributes of the system. The evaluation of the system is carried out via questionnaires distributed to learners and teachers after they used the system. Statistical analysis carried out on the collected data revealed that the respondents all agreed to the system being suitable for collaborative learning. The proposed model Lotfi VCL (Lotfi Virtual Collaborative Learning) gives an application of the tools and features of collaborative learning software suitable for learners' and teachers' collaborative activities. The study concludes by highlighting the research contributions and future enhancements of the system. © 2013 Asian Network for Scientific Information.
