Based on the concept of kinematical controllability, we can decouple the trajectory planning of an acrobot into two steps: finding a path in a configuration space and time-scaling it. In this paper, we apply this concept and plan the swing-up motion of an acrobot based on its falling-down motion. First, the initial state of the acrobot is set to the unstable upright equilibrium position, and the movement from this state to the stable downward equilibrium position is produced by introducing an artificial damping torque. A method to obtaining an optimal damping torque is presented. Then, the reference trajectory for the swing-up motion is taken to be the reverse of the falling-down motion. The validity of this method is demonstrated through simulations. ©2010 IEEE.

On user arrival patterns in the wireless network

Wireless local network traces have become an important source of information regarding user activity patterns in the wireless network. Based on the traces at the University of Southern California, this study investigates the temporal statistics of inter-arrival time denoting a time interval between two consecutive arrivals at an access point. The found results for individuals are as follows: the distribution function of inter-arrival time takes on various forms including exponential form, heavy-tail type where the tail can be well fitted by a power-law decaying function and wide power-law form which spans in a wide scale range from several seconds to two days or so. For a group arrival at a common access point, we also find a similar power-law distribution. All these results indicate that there don't exist potential, statistically identical arrivals and that simulating network traffic cannot be done with Poisson models. © 2010 Binary Information Press.

This study introduces a low cost technique for testing and monitoring process that can be applied specifically for Fiber-to-the-Home Passive Optical Network (FTTH-PON). The simplest and low cost method would be using a Optical Power Meter (OPM) which is able to detect the total loss on the network. However, to identify faulty sections of a network, segmentation need to be done together with the optical power meter. Another testing and troubleshooting method would be using the Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer (OTDR). The OTDR within the network is able to detect the component that causes losses in the network. However, elements acting as a power splitter are not being able to be detected by the OTDR. Therefore, the Access Control system (ACS) is developed to bypass those elements and allows the use of OTDR entirely. This method is proven to be a faster method than the first. Additionally, it can be upgraded to monitor the line status by accumulate all the result in one display computer screen. But this mechanism is not interested to be discussed detail in this study. The new configuration of FTTH is named as modified FTTH. In the end, we compare the installation cost between the conventional and modified FTTH for different network size according to number of users. © Asian Network for Scientific Information.

Website Personalization is one of strategic technique in delivering services in online applications. A part of process for building personalization applications is to collect particular information from the user which involves information sharing. However, the awareness about privacy concerns and security threats have caused to non-sharing behavior among the Internet Users. This situation have caused website personalization cannot be built to serve its purposes. This paper aims to investigate the people's behavior and to study the propensity of information sharing attitude in two different environments and cultures. The two environments are between real-life and online while the two cultures are between Malaysian and non-Malaysian. Since this is an exploratory study, interview with five (5) persons have been conducted. The qualitative technique that chooses was recommended for any exploratory study. The findings of this study explained the understanding of behaviors and the factors of Information Sharing. The factors are the cultural factors, the platform of sharing and the behavior of information sharing in web personalization. The sharing behavior in two environments and cultures were also compared. The data collected from the interviews have generalizing the speculations and issues in information sharing which have been discussed at the end section of this paper.

A large network delay is likely to obstruct human interaction in telecommunication systems such as telephony or video conferencing systems. In spite of the extensive investigations that have been carried out on network delays of voice and image data, there have been few studies regarding support for embodied communication under the conditions of network delay. To maintain smooth human interaction, it is important that the various ways in which delay is manifested are understood. We have already developed an embodied virtual communication system that uses an avatar called "VirtualActor," in which speakers who are remotely located from one another can share embodied interaction in the same virtual space. Responses to a questionnaire that was used in a communication experiment confirmed that a fixed 500-ms network delay has no effect on interactions via VirtualActors. In this paper, we propose a method of presenting a speaker's voice and an avatar's motion feedback in the case of a 1.5-s network delay using VirtualActors. We perform two communication experiments under different conditions of network delay. The aim of the first experiment is to examine the effect of a random time delay on the conversation. The second experiment is conducted under the conditions of a free-form conversation that takes place in 5 scenarios—1 realtime scenario without a network delay and 4 scenarios with network delay that involve a combination of a delay in the talker's voice and in his/her avatar's motion feedback. The subjects consisted of a total of 30 students who worked in 15 pairs and who were familiar with each other. A sensory evaluation shows the effects upon communication of delays in the avatar's motion feedback, from the viewpoint of supporting the interaction.

The article briefly analyzes the vibration mechanism of the gear fault and kinds of typical signal characteristics of the gears, and introduces successive fuzzy reasoning into the fault diagnosis of the gears. For the selection of characteristic parameters, we used the discrimination index DI to evaluate the identification ability of the characteristic parameters, and select the characteristic parameters of the largest value of DI. According to possibility theory and statistics and probability theory, we replace the original feature parameters into feature parameters of known distributional, and then equate the membership function used in fuzzy reasoning. Finally, the given diagnosis instance indicates that it is effective and feasible to use the method of successive fuzzy reasoning in the fault diagnosis of gears.

A person's clothes color information was estimated by using a prototype PC-based system. The novel concept can be divided into 3 stages. First, space-variant color filter is put onto the lens of the monochrome security camera. Secondly, when a crime takes place, the camera records suspected person. Finally, just after the crime, characteristics of the space-variant color filter are measured by the police, and the color of the clothes of the suspected person is estimated. In this experiment six kind reference color cloth were used. The result shows using this system to estimate the clothes color is easily, rapidly and precisely.

Traffic congestion is the cause of pollution and economic loss. The Real time traffic state report can alleviate this problem by assisting drivers for route planning and choosing unblocked roads. More traffic information could lead to more accurate route planning and greater awareness of traffic situations and road conditions for drivers. However, investment into sensor infrastructure for small minor roads is rarely available. In this paper, we present a cost efficient approach to compute real time traffic congestion degrees for non-sensor infrastructure roads, such as small minor roads, based on context fusion and context reasoning method. Our framework intends to utilize real time acquirable context instead of relying on traffic sensory data which made our approach suitable for insufficient sensor infrastructure environment. The evaluation throughout several experimentations conducted in Bangkok has proven the feasibility of our approach. Besides, the experimental result indicated that the methodology of our experiment can be used as an alternative cost efficient tool for infrastructure investment decision making. ©2010 IEEE.

Healthcare organization is very important for community in delivering a healthy life. Nurse is the person in charge that will handle the healthcare organization wisely. The nurses should get their duty roster with a wide hand to deliver a good service. There are some issue related to that needs to be classified such as the modes of operation and constraints. The most desirable environment for the nurses is the balance workload roster that will consider any preferences from them that is possible to achieve due to aim to give a respect and care about. Besides that, the solution approach that can be applied in their field must be clarified. In this paper, we will discuss the entire thing about the nurse rostering problem such as its constraints, the modes of operation, the process to complete a roster and the solution approach to this problem.
